How to Grow Amazing Hardy

Today I'm looking at growing one of my favourite groups of plants - hardy Schefflera umbrella plants like Taiwaniana, Macrophylla, Delavayi, Rhododendrifolia, Alpina and Schweliensis - amazing exotic foliage shrubs and small trees with beautiful leaves, probably my choice of trendiest garden plant for 2021 and a real houseplant that can live outside in your tropical, jungle or even small modern city garden. I look at planting and positioning advice, soil requirements, watering, how they can be pruned and hardiness / winter protection requirements as well as growth rate and how they grow best surrounded by other exotics like Fatsia Japonica, tree ferns, Tetrapanax and more. Hopefully you can add one to your garden this year!

Loving it George. Got some Phoenix canariensis, chamaerops and fatsia overwintering in the garden. Cannas nearly ready to go out, and ensete, dahlias and coleus coming from seed. Should look good!

Fantastic video George - I agree with everything you've said. I would say they can take more sun than you'd think, and I am convinced that taiwaniana and delavayi are hardier than Fatsias. Fantastic plants and a must have for any subtropical garden, even though they are hard to find over here in North America.

Thank you, I appreciate it! They can definitely take more sun but a bit of shade generally comes with the other shelter / damp / humidity aspects they’ll appreciate. You’re correct though, with enough water sun should be fine. I can see why you think that about Fatsias, I can imagine the Scheffleras being incredibly tough when they get bigger. Fatsias are probably quicker at bouncing back from any damage they might get though. They’re hard to find over here this year!

They should be perfectly OK in sun as long as the soil isn’t too dry or they’re really exposed. I would do, most of the winter damaged plants I’ve heard of tend to be the very small ones.

Great video George. I'm in the schefflera phase now. Got a small schefflera taiwaniana which I'll be plantimg out tomorrow. Your analogy about a supportive plant I think is a great one. I love my football, for me it's like an Andrea Pirlo rather than a Ronaldo. Elegant, classy, just makes it look easy. Your advice about growing them in on in a pot is sound and wise. Just like you however I'm lacking patience and am gonna plant my small plant out anyway🤣. I see your subs are now 2k already. Within a couple of years (if not earlier) I genuinely think you could make a living doing this on YT. That’s fantastic and whilst football isn’t one of my interests, I know exactly what you mean! They’re tough plants when small so you should be fine (although I know you’re going to go for it anyway!). I appreciate your comments and if I could build this into something more then that would be great - I wouldn’t say making a living from ads etc. during the videos would have to be the end goal but I’ve got a few ideas that I’m 100% sure I can work towards with persistence and passion! It frustrates me how far each video currently is away from the polished product I’d like it to be but as I’ve only got limited time to spend on them if I kept getting all the B-roll and footage I wanted for each one, I’d only be doing one a month which wouldn’t be optimal! I’ll get there though, just working on improving the planning and recording process so I’ve got more time to mess around editing. I appreciate your support as always, if you’re ever in the North Lincolnshire area, I’m sure I can find something for you!

personally I love the arboricola,especially the variegated version! they are quite hardy , down to -3c ! I am growing them ourdoors here in north Greece zone 9a. of course during winter I cover them with a cloth and they are fine! 🙂

@@GeorgesJungleGarden it's in a shady part of the garden where it's quite damp, I wonder if it needs more sun. It's only about eighteen inches, (450mm) high but it doesn't seem to have grown more than about 6 inches (150mm), in three years.

@@tedscott1478 It sounds like the right spot for it, they’re perfectly fine in a bit of shade. I’d be tempted to see if it grows this year before moving it as they can take some time to settle in and when they’re small they do take a while to get going. I’m sure it will pick up and put a flush of new leaves in spring!

Thanks David, a lot of these plants are reasonably well tolerant of sun or some shade as long as the soil is good and they’re well watered. Tree ferns, Fatsia, Fargesia bamboos, there’s lots of plants that would be OK on both sides. I’d focus on lots of greens and maybe repeat some smaller plants on both sides.

I think mine is dead....no signs of any shooting from base or anything either...I bought it from Crug last year, maybe I should have held out planting it out until it was larger... ;( I will probably buy another one at some point as it is an amazing looking plant.

Hi, I am thanks and hope you are too. I strongly suspect mine has died but I think it was the heat last summer that killed it as a few of my large-leaved plants really struggled. I suspect there may be something to growing them on for longer before planting out but Mark's one just 10 minutes away from me is a similar size and came through winter just fine. I don't think mine was the strongest plant to start with unfortunately so suspect that has something to do with it.

Any tips on varieties and potting media if trying to grow in containers? I've tried a delavayi in a container but think it needed better drainage and aeration than I was giving it, and it only lasted about 6 months. Would like to try another if feasible

That’s a shame. I’d be tempted to go for maybe John Innes No. 3 or a good quality compost and maybe add some soil improver, maybe a bit of perlite for drainage but don’t go crazy. Maybe add in a bit of garden soil. They’ll appreciate the moisture in summer.

That definitely makes sense and could explain why there’s maybe variation amongst collections from different areas but I only know what I’ve read, I’ve not seen them in habitat. They definitely look right in a shady spot too!

Hi George, do you know if schefflera have multiple growth points, or just a single one like palms? I ask because the recent cold spell has caused my macrophylla growth point to go soft and mushy, although the stem is still solid further down. Will it reshoot from lower down do you think? Thanks!

Hi Imran, they can indeed have multiple growth points - like a shrub or tree - and I would hope that it would resprout from the trunk lower down. It may even branch out so you get more foliage. Fingers crossed for you!

I get the feeling you're already convinced, they're beautiful plants! It's a Pteris umbrosa, an unusual looking fern, probably not the most hardy but definitely worth a go with some shelter.

I saw an enormous plant at a National Trust property in Surrey a few years ago. It was in a courtyard against the building wall. I also grow cretica outside, again not thriving but it survives each winter I think a Schefflera will be added this year.

Hi, apologies for my delayed reply, just getting caught up with comments. Do you suspect it's an issue with the roots of yours too? In all honesty I've very much gone with a survival of the toughest approach here and taiwaniana plus rhododendrifolia have been the ones able to cope best with winter cold and summer heatwaves for me. I wouldn't rule out trying one again but with structural plants I increasingly look for reliability rather than being experimental or trying to 'collect' groups of plants.

Never mind hardiness. Which one of them is the most heat resistant? I lost taiwaniana, fengii and rhododendrifolia within one very hot summer week. Only delavayi made it thru. Certainly they are not good container plants, since their roots must stay cool in summer.

That's an issue that I experienced for the first time last summer too, with the heatwaves taking out my delavayi and macrophylla (neither of which were the strongest plants to start with though). They can be grown in containers to get them to a bigger size before introducing them to their final positions but you're absolutely right, as a long term container plant in a terracotta pot in a sunny spot, they are far from ideal choices. You might enjoy watching my latest video at Dr Simon Olpin's jungle garden where he has mature examples of a lot of Schefflera and speaks about the effects of the sun. I think larger plants cope better with the heat (as expected with a more established root system) but surrounding planting, humidity, moisture and mulching really do help.

I keep looking for an apartment with north facing balcony or terrace but nowadays it's really hard to find anything affordable. I really enjoy your channel. I used to grow many different exotic plants years ago, but life got too complicated and had to reduce my collection to just a few plants. Just the other day I bought myself a nice Schefflera delavayi and I'm gonna keep it alive whatever the costs.

Hi, I've seen them planted near large old houses / buildings down in Cornwall but ultimately these will become large shrubs or small trees if left so I would encourage some caution. If you watch my video at Dr Simon Olpin's jungle garden you'll get an idea of the root systems and eventual sizes.

Hi Karlo, personally I'd set a hose to a fine mist setting and try to blast them off or carefully remove them by hand. They're not something that I find Schefflera are particularly prone to problems with so hopefully they won't become an issue anyway, I imagine they're just attracted to the new growth currently.

It does indeed. If you Google them the leaves can be even bigger but this one was kept in a pot for a while and that’s obviously had an effect. Hopefully they’ll size up more now it’s in the ground!

Hi, I’d usually say Pan Global Plants or Crug Farm but everywhere seems to enjoy struggling for stock this year. Personally I’d wait and get a larger plant from one of these two!

Hi Katie, they do here with a bit of winter protection. They’re tougher than you might expect but still need a bit of TLC during freezes.

Can you offer some advice on the schefflera for me please? i brought one about 2 weeks ago, its in a shady spot but with some morning sun, but...the leaves are curling any ideas why that could be? thanks:)

Hi, could it be down to the frost or winds we’ve had? Either might affect if this spring if it was previously kept in more sheltered environment.

@@GeorgesJungleGarden yes, i did group it together with other plants to keep it warmer and it was more sheltered but yes, it was under cover!! Hmm, thanks for the info!

@@skajdius8056 They're more suggestions than a definite diagnosis but usually something like that which isn't caused by under-watering is usually down to shock from a change in conditions. I'm sure it'll pull though though!

I planted one last year and now it’s looking rough. I’ve lost loads of so called hardy tropical plants this winter.

What size was it Linzi? What other plants did you lose? I had a good bit of damage on two smaller Butias 😢

It’s about a foot in height. I lost a big Fatsia, two 5-6ft cordyline, a cordyline red star, yucca Spanish dagger, and my mature Waggie and Fortunei look like they’ve been on fire.

@@linzi94 Wow, that’s bad! I could understand the Schefflera struggling at that size but the Yucca Gloriosa and Trachycarpus should be absolutely fine, we haven’t had temperatures that cold (I didn’t think anyway!). Where do you live?

Reasonably but they’d ideally be better somewhere sheltered away from cold winds like a lot of woodland plants.

@@valougame3175 They’re pretty flexible and sort of like an ash tree I guess? If you’ve got a really exposed location though they’re probably not the best plant.

@@valougame3175 Maybe Eucalyptus Neglecta but if it’s very windy it might not be the best Schefflera spot, it won’t like it in winter.

try the tropical garden webshops in the netherlands, they have a lot more than the average gardencenter ☺

I recently bought one at a plant nursery called Morning Glory (Aalsmeer). It was sold as a Taiwaniana but judging from this video it is a Shweliensis. Hope it is as hardy (should still be protected in some Dutch winters when it gets below -8 or so).

Hi, as other people have said, they’re not an everyday garden centre plant yet, but I think that’ll change over the next few years. Any tropical plant nurseries or specialists would be a good first place to check.

@@Weerchris Taiwaniana can be really variable, some have crinkled leaves, the greens vary as does how glossy they are so it’s a bit tricky to guess! I’ve read Schweliensis may even be a form of Taiwaniana but I’ll leave that to the experts! Hopefully they’re all equally as tough, I imagine they will be.

@@parttimeninja5521 Thanks for helping, the garden centres are slowly catching up with the more interesting plants here and stocking more exotics but the specialists are still the best bet too!
