Don’t worry if anyone did like I did my first year growing asparagus. I didn’t know what the crown was and I buried them every which way inside a tiny container! They sprouted super fast. I decided to move them from the greenhouse to the outside garden so I used a bigger round container. They really took off then. This is my second year with them and they are all popping up like cray and much bigger than last year. I won’t harvest it until next year, though. They are much hardier and easier than you could ever imagine them to be!!

Omgoodness I’m so excited !, Thank you so much Tracy I love fresh asparagus but have never planted it as I didn’t know you could plant it in a raised bed,I always rely on my fam friends to bring me some,but this is a game changer for me,soon as the snow melts and the dirt warms up I’m going to plant asparagus with all my strawberries,I may have to put them in randomly as my strawberry bed is full of beautiful strawberries,the whole raised bed has them,I hope that will work!! My farm friends say all their asparagus grows all over the place,but in the ground but I put all raised beds into my garden and mulched all the ground covered with cedar mulch!! Wish me luck 🍀 again thank you so much for this video love from Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦

Thank you for this. I was just trying to figure out what and how I was going to plant my asparagus on my new land. I planted some bare root stock last year in a pot hoping to get a headstart in the process since it takes so long for asparagus to get established. Now your telling me that's not gonna work 😭. Oh well I tried. Thanks for the great information
@justdigitfarms
@justdigitfarms 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Darlene! What happens is, the roots need to go deep to protect themselves from the cold temps and get established and if you harvest the asparagus spears to early the energy goes into producing more spears instead of roots and it will die. So by you planting in a pot, you should have a pretty good root system when you plant it, which will definitely help but I for sure wouldn’t harvest the first year. And definitely bring your pot in in the winter. Good luck!

Are you talking about tractor supply? If so, yes I have purchased many things from them and had much success. I think the hesitancy in my voice was just because I’ve always purchased my crowns from Petals and they take so long before we can harvest them they need to be good healthy crowns right off the bat😊. Blessings!

So glad to hear that you grow your asparagus and strawberries in a raised bed. I have a four ft by 20 ft strawberry and asparagus patch. I filled the beds with compost from the city when I built these big raised beds. I had so many tomatoes from two of the beds. Do you stake up the fern foliage to keep it off your strawberries? I have a second bed with asparagus down the center. I bought my crowns as 2 year old crowns and this will be their second season in the bed. Is it okay to mulch my strawberries with pine straw? I had a bunch brought in for free to use in my 200 ft long mixed cottage border and I have extra. Thanks
@justdigitfarms
@justdigitfarms 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tawana! I’m so excited to hear you are already growing your asparagus and strawberries together! That is awesome! I probably will stake my asparagus to keep it off my strawberries. Do you ? I believe straw will be fine. Just remember over time if you always add pine straw it will make the soil more acidic and your asparagus likes a neutral soil. Blessings!

If the asparagus would be the cash crop so that would make the strawberry the sacrificial crop? But are they both high value crops?? 🤔 What other companion crop(s) would be suitable to place alongside asparagus??? -Asking as a person in a tropical climate.
