This video was the crash-course that gave me the courage to start a Kratky garden! One tip for the algae -- we put some black socks over the mason jars to block the light. When it's time to top off the water, just pull down the sock to see the water level. Dollar Tree sells the Crew Socks at 4 socks per dollar, so it's super low cost and actually looks pretty good.

I've been keeping mine in a mason jar and I fill the water just up to the top of the roots, and the thing is growing like crazy! It's tripled in size since we got it! Thank you for the info in this, cause I didn't know about being able to grow more plants from the clippings or about the baskets you can use in jars! We love basil, and use it constantly so that was all very helpful to know!

Iv'e been putting my Basil stems with some leaves on them, In a jar with cold water, And leave it on the window sill in the sunlight & they start to grow Roots, after a week or so. Then I plant them into some potting soil. In doors for the winter Months.? So far so good. I store the plant near a window so they can get the Sun on them etc.

The rock wool is pretty handy because it keeps the stem moist but also allows sufficient oxygen to reach the newly forming roots. If your air temperature is low enough the glass of water method should work great too.

If you screw the lid on the mason jar and then set the net pot in there, you can lift the net pot out of the jar very easily when there are plants in it without messing up the plants. This makes it nice if you want to look at the roots, or add more water without going through the soil.
