I am glad to see that most of the plants recovered from the crazy spring weather in our area this year. I waited to plant my pole beans because of it. Now they are climbing up the teepees. It is so hard not to fertilize them. I go around with compost tea once a week, and I have to remind myself to skip the beans. They do so much better without fertilizer. I am looking forward to seeing your harvest.

I think you will find rooted feet, that Mr Hollis fertilizes his snap beans pretty heavily, and has great results. In his video about them he used fish, rock, compost and triple thirteen. My question is, are snap beans requirements different from other beans? Do you fertilize your snap beans?
@HollisNancysHomestead
@HollisNancysHomestead 7 жыл бұрын
+Percy Miller No Percy, I used none of that on my beans. I have plenty of Nitrogen in my soil. I don't add anything because it makes my bean plants grow all leaves and no blooms.

I have the same type super duper seed planter but I have a funnel on the top end and a short peice of wood ('bacca stick) sharpened to a point that is held on at the bottom with a hose clamp. it sticks out about 2 inches beyond the pipe. You stick it in the ground to make the hole, and as you pull it out, you drop the seed in and it goes in the hole. It save one step.

New subscriber. That seed dropper and water belt is an idea that I will be permanently borrowing for y'all. That is just pure genius right there. We've been having real odd weather here. We use to get rain in the late afternoons but now it just starts poring mid morning all the way through. So I might start my seeds in containers and then sow them in. But I'm definitely gonna put this idea in my journal. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless.

I think you're right about rain water vs. hose water. I personally think the additives (like fluoride) they put in the water supply are what the plants don't like. Every time we get a real storm everything comes to life.

+Peachyheart Georgia They will most likely be ok. The video you saw was after a couple of growing seasons and the ground soil was needing a boost. I do that about every 3 years or so. A good rule of thumb is if you are growing something that needs blooms to produce the fruits you are looking for go very light on the nitrogen. These plants need phosphorus for good root growth and blooms. If you are growing something that you are going to eat the leaves such as collards, spinach etc. these need a little nitrogen to push lead development.

Do you have a follow up video for this one? I am not sure how long to leave the beans on the plant? I love lima beans too they are so delicious to eat. I have grown regular bean and I love the asparagus beans I grew them last year they are on my growing list for every year now. But some of the other beans, like Broard beans, can be eaten at a green stage or grown on to be dried beans, not sure of the names used in the USA for these, do you know what I am talking about...? Mainly beans for drying, pinto etc. Thank you for all you both do and all the work you put into your video's they are always awesome, just love the video's and you guys too!

Oml I can relate to how “tough” it was with temps. We had those drops the last couple of weeks and of an entire row I planted...only TWO came up lol. I replanted some from a bag in my pantry! I ran out of the ones I bought as “seed”. Damn if every one of those didn’t sprout! I now have a full row. I hope they do okay. I did it as a joke with my husband from the bag of beans. I didn’t expect them to come up lol. I’m not complaining though!

@francescaashby1531 Жыл бұрын
I’m harvesting Christmas Pole Lima beans that I’m meant to pressure can fresh, are the white ones good? They’re just as big but haven’t changed color. The darkest ones resemble the original bean color that was planted but mostly just from the dried up pods. Does the little sprout change it’s eatability? I’ve watched a ton of videos, but I haven’t seen these questions brought up. I greatly appreciate any help you can provide.

Can you provide an average tempurature range the plants grow well in. I'm in Northeast Florida and looking for plants to grow in the December through February/March time frame. We very rarely go below 17 degrees F' and the days are usually in the 40-60 degrees during our winter. One of our problems is a high level of calcium, magnesium carbonates, gypsum or salt. I've been using a lot of potting and garden soils from Home Depot where I plant. I get some things to grow, but the fruits are smaller than normal. Is there a way to balance the soil that is naturally high in those salty compounds?

I grew up on a farm in south GA. Lima beans need Southern SUMMERS with temperatures in the upper 80s to 90s. They don't produce well unless there is FULL sun and WARM nights. They won't do in winter.

Hello Sir. How are you and Nancy doing? Quick question, are black beans a bush bean or a pole bean? I planted some in container (I live in an apartment 🙈), but now I have no clue if they are bush or pole beans. Heeeelp please

Clever seed placing tool! (Pvc..who'd a thunk it!) My back is hating me for planting as much as I have already, and I'm only halfway done. I wish I wouldn't seen this a few weeks ago. lol

LynaRay lol i was thinking the same thing except I've only just begun braking new ground. Thank God for tillers because my back could never do it by hand anymore.

I saw the tomatoe box you built. I am not a fan of the wire cages. What are your specs for that?

That tiller is a death machine for your soil life. You probably notice that you have to use fertilizer and more of it every year. I know it's a small plot out. It looks like commercial farming.

Wow, my mom and I would always say how much better our flowers would come to life and bloom when it rained vs us watering them . Thanks for the info, now I can tell her there is nitrogen in the rain👍

Try no tile gardening. Your soil will become fluffy a few years later and you don't need to till you soil year after year. Plus you will start to have a lot of worms in your soil too.
