This is the first year I’m successfully growing cucumbers. Turns out I was way under watering before. Great video, Lucas. 😊

I'm glad I'm not the only one whose cucumbers have a mind of their own and decide the ground is easier to crawl around than up a trellis! LOL. I just spent a bit of time this morning coaxing my cukes back up their trellis. My biggest problems are cucumber beetles and squash bugs. I've learned to start the seeds indoors after they completely decimated my seedlings last year. They still do lots of leaf damage if I transplant, and so difficult to get rid of even with sprays (organic pyrethrin). Fortunately even though some of the leaves look terrible (and I keep stripping them off), the cukes keep coming.

Hahaha Peter, yeah they can go crazy on ya! Cucumber beetles are a bit of a pain for me. Have you tried diatomaceous earth? I find that helps with mine.

@@lucasgrowsbestyt The problem with using DE over the last couple of weeks is we've been having crazy flash rainstorms nearly every night. Enough to wash out any DE application, but not enough to actually provide much water to the plants. Crazy!

Do you ever look around the yard for worms to put in the compost pile?

Hi Lucas, glad you made this video - reminder to help our cucumbers grow well, and save space by growing vertically. I have 4 plants, 2 Muncher and 2 Spacemaster (both heirloom/started from seed) and they did very well last year and fit into a small front yard garden. They are growing fast now and hoping they do as well this year, may include the cucumber plant dance 💃. 🐝🌞

Question: my cucumber vines grew fabulously and no bad insects at all. Plenty of bees but all the flowers were female and I didn’t get a single cucumber. I finally ripped them all out and want to plant more seeds but it’s 100+ here every day. Is it too hot to plant?
@lucasgrowsbestyt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Barb! Since all the flowers were female, it sounds to me like they were a hybrid gynoecious variety. This would mean you'd need to plant another type of cucumber that will bear male flowers in order for pollination to occur. Pollination and crossing has always been confusing to me. You best bet in the future is to Google the specific variety and find out what needs to be done to ensure pollination. I don't think it's too hot to plant, but you better be watering them like mad!

Hi Lucas, Great video as usual. What climate are you in (heat and cool zone, rainfall etc)? I thought you mentioned you were in Canada, but you always talk in imperial measurements, so I must have screwed that up, my apologies. How much out of sync are your video's to when they were filmed? I'm about to start planting my seeds (indoors), in your videos you just planted a little over a month ago. I'm getting close to spring (Melbourne, Australia). How do you manage to find the time to maintain a large plot? You have given me the confidence to augment my 2 raised beds 1.8m x 3.6m beds and use the rest of the back yard 36m x 10m (full sun), I may even put pumpkins in my front yard. Where I live 1 small no taste low quality commercial tomato is AU$1.10 from the big supermarkets and going up in price, medium head of Broccoli AU$11.00, everyone I know is becoming very interested in gardening. I will be giving a number of my seedlings away this year and insisting they watch your excellent videos first. Thanks.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I'm thrilled to be inspiring people across the globe to grow their own veggies, and I appreciate you sharing my vids with others. I am in Ontario, Canada Zone 5b. We get moderate rainfall, though this summer has been very dry. Typically my vids are a week or two (sometimes more) out of synch. This particular video I filmed, edited, and posted on the same day. In the future I am going to try to include the filming dates. Cheers!!!
