Fab video Tony! I loved the visual example of how you do the bulb lasagne! Even though I usually stay away from ornamentals, there is nothing better than a flourish of colour throughout spring :) I can't wait to see how it'll turn out for you with all the bulbs you planted in spring. Great stuff mate!

Ones I planted with bulbs last year and topped up with soil and viola’s this August I’ve noticed have shoots already poking through. I have never ever known this to happen before. Do you think it’s the weather we have had this summer? I’m in Kent and it’s still really warm down here.
@simplifygardening

I think you are right. Next year once the last have come up I just might take them out of the containers and plant them under the trees in the garden. Then plant up a new batch in October/ November. Least that way they should all be poking their heads out at the correct time. Last year I had the daffy out at Christmas.

Hi Thanks for this.I'm new to gardening now I'm semi retired. I have finally gone out and planted up my large deep plastic trough because I had about 70 bulbs to plant and nowhere to put them so I've planted about 50 of them following your lasagne method including aliums (varied packs) around the long edges quite close in and a central line of beautiful double daffodils which were starting to sprout then added about 30 tulip bulbs- some pale pink edged white ones (Simply Irresistible) and some purple/black (Queen of the Night)and some lighter purple and am very excited to see next March as I've had success with my experimental and marvellous wine and roses gladioli from Aldi. I hope I haven't overdone it and at the same time wonder if I can do some top planting as you have. Hooray. Thanks again. Only twenty left to go SOMEWHERE

Thank you for the video. I am trying forcing bulbs this year. Issue is I had to put just the bulbs in a small fridge, and now that they are chilled, I'm kind of confused how to plant. I am in US in Wisconsin, and our winters get really cold. We have an unheated garage, but I am afraid that they may get frozen (which 2 weeks ago, they probably would have) which is why I store the bulbs in the fridge. I love the layer look of bulb pots. Instead of spending $100 buying one online, I thought I try creating my own. Hopefully they turn out. I'm surprised not to see more videos of this, this year since people are looking forward to spring because of COVID.

Hi Tony, where would you keep this pot throughout the winter? From Canada.
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 5 жыл бұрын
I would put it in a greenhouse shed or up against a wall, but will be fine outside if raised off the ground to allow it to drain correctly

I haven't planted bulbs in years. used to plant a few every year Every once in a while they come up without warning. This year we saw the windflowers come up. And grape hyacinth and hostas. The tulips. Narcissi , tulips & gladiolas didn't show.

Maybe the tulips and all just tired bulbs needing to rest for a year, if they dont come up this year time to plant new ones

Thats a shame Edie, But even worth paying a local kid or grandchild a tenner to plant them all for you, once they are in its done for years, money well spent, It doesnt mean you have to go without

UK Here We Grow yes well. Right now don't have extra for that and the grands live too far away. Can't afford to buy what isn't edible right now. So I'll make do with old seeds.

Tony, I just found your channel ... love it. So informative. I live in Virginia, United States. I'm definitely goning to plant up two pots of "bulb lasagna" this September. My only question, do you think the primrose will thrive in a US zone 7 over the winter?

@@simplifygardening I'm wondering about winter care, in Zone 7, as well. Do the pots need to be taken indoors or in a greenhouse during the winter? I ordered a bunch of bulbs, with this very thing in mind, not knowing if it would actually work. SOOO glad I found your video! Will be giving the pots as Christmas gifts to the kids... and to myself!! But now I need to know how to care for them, during the winter, please! THANKS!

What happens after all the bulbs flowered? Do i have to dig it up due to new baby bulbs ? Or leave it and plant a new annual on top ?

Hi Tony! Great video! I live in Dallas TX USDA zone 8a, pretty hot here. I was wondering if I plant some seeds, maybe mustard, since I like their flowers on top of my bulb lasagna, will this prevent the bulbs below from getting enough sun? My plan now is to use some daffodils on the bottom and some spider Lilies closer to the top. Daffodils bloom in March here, the Spider lilies will come up the end of summer, also I want to keep the Spider lilies away from my dogs, since I just read that these bulbs are poisonous, thus the container idea is good, it will be outside my fenced area. I caught the puppy digging up and eating one of my other spring bulbs! Ahhh!

I'm unsure where to put them for the winter. I saw that someone was trying this in Canada so I must be able to do it in Maine. Can I keep them in a room that I keep at 45-50 degrees? Would that work? Do they need to be in the dark?

Thanks for the video. It looks and sounds pretty cool! I already got a couple of big pots and want to try this method. The only thing what’s holding me back is the depth of planting. Aren’t tulips supposed to go no deeper than 4-5’? But in your method they are buried deeper than that. Same goes for daffodils. Will they sprout and really bloom being planted so deep? That’s my only concern. The outcome video would help understand and visually see the results! Awaiting for your response before I start digging and planting 😊

My understanding is that the bulbs will eventually find their own ideal depth/position during growth ie - moving up or down slightly - somehow !?

Great idea, but I find it hard to believe that this will work with bulbs buried so deep, yet bypassing the ones above to reach the top. And they're planted very close to one another. I'll have to look into this more...
