Nice video, beautiful plants...from my experience one thing I would add...If you are going to sow seeds in organic soil you should bake it for 1 hour (350F) and to add fungicide to liquid used for watering otherwise there is no way you can avoid algae ,fungi etc. Do not know how come your soil looks so clean...well done...

How do you transfer the seedlings from the sowing container to their individual plugs? Is there any special way to do this without harming the seedlings in the process? Great video too.

Use a butter knife to pierce and loosen the soil next to the baby and use kitchen tongs to pick up the cactus to transfer to whatever container you will next use.

If this species of cactus begins getting soft yellow from the bottom, is there anyway I can save it beside repotting? If I cut the roots off, sort of like a cutting, with it grow roots? *The top is still fine*
@UnstableAudioProductions8 жыл бұрын
+addictivesubstance14 Yes you should stop watering it - yellow color is usualy sign of rotting. Cut the upper side only as a last resort. If it comes to that you should then place it in a box or somewhere dark and dont plant it for a couple weeks. By doing that you force the cutting into root mode :) Good luck

my cactus is small too. however I noticed three little buds. It was time to water and when the slow water stream hit the bud it (the bud) rolled, moved as if it had no roots. what do I do to save my plant?
@emmitstewart19218 жыл бұрын
+stepheny lloyd The roots on newly sprouted cacti are so tiny that they may as well not be there. Its best to bottom water baby cactus by setting the whole pot in a saucer or tray with about a half inch of water. Leave the pot in the water only until the soil is moistened, then remove it and allow any excess to drain out. Make sure that the plants that were disturbed by the water stream are bottom down, then press them gently into contact with the soil. Most cactus seedlings are shaped like balloons. The pointed end is the bottom and the round end is the top.
@GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES.8 жыл бұрын
+Emmit Stewart Good stuff, Emmit. This is definitely the only way to go! I had read (and later found out myself) that by bottom watering like this, the bud is encouraged to grow its roots deeper and more efficiently...

I have some giant saguaro and indian fig cacti sprouts that I'm hoping you will be so kind to answer some questions. 1. I have them in a similar container, but how do I know when to pull them out? 2. With the saguaros, I know they are slow growing, but they have been about a quarter inch for the last four months. Is this the normal growth rate? It seems almost too slow for a little sprout. 3. My indian fig sprouts look like a leafy plant and not a cactus. Is this normal for this species? 4. How often do you water the little sprouts once they are transplanted into a pot of dirt? Thanks for your time.
@emmitstewart19218 жыл бұрын
+GoBlue5769661, I usually transplant my cacti when they are big enough to touch each other.2. If you used a starter mix like the one in the video, it contains no fertilizer. Your saguaro seedlings have used up what little nutrition there is in it. Time to start fertilizing. Use the same type of fertilizer that you would use for tomatoes or roses, only at half strength or less at first.3. It is natural for indian fig cacti to have fat little leaves on new growth. They usually drop off as the pad matures.4. watering cacti varies with species and season. For indian fig and saguaro, allow the surface of the soil to become dry to the touch, then water thoroughly in summer. In winter give only enough water to keep them from shriveling. I just mist mine with reverse osmosis water once every week or so. Young seedlings can be kept under gro-lights in winter so that they can grow continuously, in which case you would water them the same way as summertime. Make sure that the plants are kept very close to the lights.

I think that is why I like them so much. They will out live us, our children, and probably grandchildren to some extent.Its great!! I highly doubt it will happen, but I'm hoping to grow these saguaros and then plant them in the desert in Arizona or Nevada to help with their endangered status. I also bought a nine inch giant. If I did the math correctly that thing is 27 years old. I love it!

@mar1video7 жыл бұрын
Fakhrul Abidi - in the winter time don't water them for 2 or 3 months, and lower the temperature significantly, then in the spring feed them tomato fertilizer ( low N, high P, high K ) . That should do it . Enjoy your cactuses blooming !

does this work for growing san pedro cactus
@GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES.8 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Pathmanathan This will work for just about any cactus, but DEFINITELY San Pedro. I have about 300 babies on my back porch right now (wasn't planning on having that many - I bought 400 seeds really cheap because I didn't think that many would germinate, but dang near everyone of them did)!
@GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES.8 жыл бұрын
Emelly C Technically I did, but I hadn't seen this video before starting my seeds. The exact method used in this video is VERY common :) I'm not trying to knock the video at all (he did a great job), but just wanted to let you know that many many many people have used this exact method for a long time and it works.
@GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES.8 жыл бұрын
Emelly C Ummm, not too much that the video didn't cover. I would say the most important thing is uncovering the seedlings SLOWLY once they're growing. I use ziplock bags for mine - cut a corner off first and wait a few days; cut the other corner off and wait a few more days; should be good to fully open after that. If you open up the bags all the way too soon without acclimating the babies, they'll DEFINITELY die.
