This video is a detailed description of Carolina Jessamine. Carolina Jessamine is an evergreen vine that is native to the Southeast United States. Some people call it Carolina Jasmine. It has beautiful yellow flowers in mid-spring and some residual flowers in the fall. This fast growing vine can reach 20 feet or more in height. It is similar to Swamp Jessamine.
Carolina Jessamine
Gelsemium sempervirens

Was not aware to mix Carolina (Gelsemium sempervirens) and Swamp Jessamine (Gelsemium rankinii) in order to have a fall display. I have found, however, that this plant will strangle other plants by rapping around their stems and as that plant grows in girth it will get choked. I transplanted about a dozen wild Carolina Jessamine seedlings to an arbor and fencing but after 2 years have found that they have not been great flower producers so I intend on replacing all of them next season with named varieties that are purchased at a plant nursery. Great video!!

Thanks for all the info! 🙂 I'm looking for a beautiful, flowering vine to grow around a half-gazebo, over a hot tub. I am hoping to find one with bright, colorful flowers... but I don't want it to "shed" too much (like morning glories)... AND, I''d like for the flowers to be somewhat fragrant! I heard you say that this plant isn't as fragrant, so I might keep looking. ...It sure does have a beautiful blossom though! :-)

Hi Jim, I live in South San Francisco, California, close to the coast (zone 10A). Our temperature is around 60s with late Indian summer it does not get higher than 80s on a few hot days. I have this plant leaning against the wall of the house in the front and it has not bloomed a single flower in the 3-4 years that I have it. It does grow and climb but just with green leaves. A note though our area has constant wind if that maybe a factor for lack of bloom? I don't really fertilize but uses Osmocote once a year. Any suggestions to help it bloom some flowers? Thanks!

Hello! I need help ASAP!! I wish I had watched your video before repotting my Virginia Jessamine yesterday. I thought my mom knew better than me so I asked her what I should do to repot it and she told me I could remove some of the roots when I removed the plastic liner it came in because it wouldn't fit in the wooden planter I was transferring it to. Sadly this morning the leaves were droopy 😥 I felt so bad because I should have gone with my gut feeling that removing the root was like removing a limb. What can I do??? A neighbor told me I should buy something for plant shock.

I have a Carolina Jassamine in a container. I bought it in the spring and it grows nicely but the leaves have never looked vibrant. And, it has not bloomed until now in January. I did some additional research and some sources say that it will bloom starting in Dec. through May. I'm in North/Central Georgia. Now that I know it's not in a dormant state... I want to make sure I'm caring for it properly. What should I do to care for it in the winter? I've been ignoring it. :-) And, watering it occasionally.

Hi Jim, great video. We planted ours a year ago on a large 5x8' trellis. I have strings holding them up and the plant not weaved its way very well through the trellis. I'm wondering if I can cut it down and try to re-train it? The trellis openings are small (1.5" squares), so also thinking the plant is not going through. They are about 5-8' long now, can they be cut down to 1-2'?

I planted carolina jasmine in containers this past spring. I put them next to a privacy fence. I did not put them in the ground because the ground is covered in white rock. I am old. Too hard to shovel, lol. I am in 8b on the eastern shore of virginia: salt air and wind. Can I leave the containers outdoors this winter or will it freeze and kill the plants? I do have space to put them in the shed but.... I am old and lazy.

Hi Jim, I inherited a beautiful big Carolina Jasmine in our new house. It is all along the back wall of our yard. There is a ton of dead undergrowth on it, but the vines are green and it flowers. The dead undergrowth is pushing the vines out a lot from the wall. Any suggestions on how to trim undergrowth and not damage the healthy vines that are starting to bloom now?

Hi Jim, Please help; no one here seems to know what’s happening to my plants! Wish I could include pictures but seems I cannot here... :) Last week the Green Acres fellow said that I was watering them too much; this week they look even worse with the reduced watering. I spoke with a different fellow at Green Acres today and he says to water longer less often with smaller drips. I’m in Antelope CA 95843 and I water M,W & F each week for 8 minutes each morning (0600) on 3 gallon drips. When the fellow said O need to cut back water I changed the drip to a 1 gallon drip and time to 5 minutes, three times a week. I haven’t had even one problem with either of these vines all (mostly dry), but chilly Winter until now when the temps are getting into the high sixties mid day. The older plant was gardener planted last May 2021 and the younger plant was planted by me last Fall in September. Please help… I have run out of options and I truly love these vines; I’m retired as of end last month so I have all the time in the world to dedicate to these vines, so please help! Thanks Jim Stay safe, be well, and many beautiful growing seasons ahead to you Sir!
