Growing vanilla indoors outside of the tropics is not hard if you know what it needs. Grow it in sphagnum moss only. I have found that potting soil and even orchid potting mix does not provide enough air circulation and leads to root rot. You can buy sphagnum moss in bricks from garden stores and online. Because it is a vine it needs something to climb up. I used a sphagnum moss pole for that initially but have now switched to hygrolon . You need to secure the vanilla plant to the pole in the beginning but eventually the aerial roots will cling to the damp support and it will climb on its own. Water once a week during winter and only a couple times a week during summer. Make sure the moss is starting to dry out before watering to prevent root rot. Keep temps at 60 or above at all times, as rot is prevalent below those temps. It can go outside during the summer on warm days. Rot can happen during the winter anyways. I just cut off the rotted portion of the stem and growth tip and it grows back in spring. Nice bright window works fine, just not too much direct sun all the time. In terms of fertilizing I add 10-10-10 osmocote balls in the moss maybe once a year and then use a balanced orchid fertilizer every other week. I went to a vanilla plantation in Hawaii and the guy who works there said I should add a enzymatic formula called slf 100 on the weeks I don't fertilize during the summer to prevent root rot and create a healthier plant. I am going to using it this year for the first time and see if it really makes my vanilla plant healthier. Really not too difficult to grow indoors outside of the tropics. Pollination is the hard part.

I would also love to see a vanilla video. I have a black pepper plant that a friend gave me and it sounds like cocoa likes the same conditions as the pepper plant. I live in Nicaragua, the pepper plant is totally happy in almost full shade underneath a mango tree. I have one black pepper plant in the ground and one in the container. Whats interesting about the container is that it only needs water maybe once a month. There is a layer of cardboard on top of the soil which seems to do wonders keeping the soil moist. I don't have access to perfect soil mixtures so I have to make the best of what I can find and... it seems to be quite beneficial to cover the soil with something that traps some air (this makes a cushion that water doesn't easily pass through) I've noticed that sawdust does not seem to work as well as cardboard, the sawdust seems to "leech" the moisture out of the soil underneath when in direct sunlight, while the cardboard just seems to dry up and protect the soil under it. Cardboard looks nasty, but seems to be better....

I live in Hawaii which is the only State that one can successfully grow Cacao trees because it is located on the outer edges of the “ Southern Hemisphere”. The first farm was started in 1996 on Oahu. All Islands today ( 2021) now have some form of commercial cacao farming. FYI. You don’t grow chocolate trees. You grow cacao trees and process the beans to make chocolate. Informative video. I used to have orchids, which are equally temperamental to grow. I used sheets of plexiglass and 1.25" square stock milled from a cedar 2×4 for framing to build an enclosure for my orchids, so I could create a microclimate of warmer temperatures and higher humidity than the rest of my house. I installed a grow light in the top of the case with a programmable timer, dressing everything up with humidity and temperature gauges next to the timer controls on the marine plywood crown piece that housed all those components. I was going to add automatic watering, but I got an offer on the case and orchids I couldn't refuse. You could probably build something like the case I built just for your jungle tropicals, like cacao and coffee trees. It's essentially like building an aquarium, but with a door, and made for plants, not fish. I prefer plexiglass, because I have a menagerie of clumsy family members, so glass is kept to the minimum, but you could use glass, if you prefer. You could also build the frame easily from 80/20 aluminum, in which case, there's companies which could sell you all the components precut, so it could be assembled like an IKEA piece of furniture. Sorry for my verbosity, but I am a fellow Midwesterner, a few states south, so I can relate to some of the challenges you're facing. If I ever get around to building another growing cabinet like the one I described, I will create a video for it.

@JackPitmanNica2 жыл бұрын
The flowers are usually polinated by those annoying gnat bugs that bite us, on the farms and in the wild there is usually a rotten pile of cacao full of them. The cacao needs to be polinated from a different cacao tree, so you need access to a second tree to successfully polinate it by hand

I’m getting a small cacao plant from a neighbor, here in Washington. She grew it from seed. My plan is to bring it to work where it I’ll get south facing daylight and all day sunlight (when the sun is out) in front of large floor to ceiling windows. I’m worried about it getting dried out being in A/C. It will have plenty of sun and won’t be too wet. But the bag over the soil seems like a good idea.

Hi great video, thank you for putting this information out there. I Have one question, how much slow release sulfur do I need per let’s say a 6 inch pot and how am I placing it in the soil? Should I only have it right at the bottom? Does it get fully mixed in? I raised 50 cacao plants from pod, unfortunately I lost a lot of them, I now have about half. I’ve had some that were super healthy then one day out of nowhere completely dried up with leaves on it and all. I’m going to take your advice on the potting mix and hopefully that should help the ones I have left thrive 😊

Every Tip List. -2 Gallon Pot -black moisture cover over mulch topsoil -needs to dry out somewhat, so of course a pot with holes. -water deep around once a week 1 part potting mix 1 part sand 1 part basalt (volcanic rock) Mixed with Coconut and spagum mix -amend soil more acidic with sulphur pellets Fertilize 2 times a year, when bigger 3 times. Slightly more nitrogen in balanced fertilizer Give fuller longer 11 hr light in climates other than warm tropical -small humidifier to raise to 90% -small Heater to raise to 80-90 Degrees Fahrenheit Prune Only when the tree wants leaves off it's branches Happy Tree 🌴 ❤️

I'm planning my setup for next summer and have experimented with home made air pruning pots made from buckets with holes and landscaping fabric, but i'm wondering if actual fabric pots might work better than landscape fabric? ... I have grown cacao in containers for nearly 20 years. I have killed a LOT in my learning process. My latest project is to take air-layers off my criollo cacao and put them into dutch-bucket hydroponics. The ICQC in the UK grows cacao like this and even fruits them. I've had fruit develop here in Texas, but like you said, cacao is extraordinarily finicky. I also grow coffee and have harvested. The Texas Freeze with the brown-outs killed my older coffee trees, but I have some saplings indoors so they are my new crop. Vanilla orchids too - my mature vanilla was scorched to oblivion by 7f temps so I've started over with young starts. Eventually, all my tropicals will go into hydroponic systems to better manage their nutrient and moisture availability and give me more control over their overall growing environment. Chocolate naturally branches by forming jorquettes, as you have no doubt figured out by now. Lopping their top can inspire the trees to form suckers that become branches, however. I let mine grow tall so I can air-layer them more easily and as close to the jorquette as I can. Different trees will form jorquettes at different levels, however. It all depends on genetics. Some branch very low. Others can grow 8' or more before they branch. Another option is to graft scions from desirable trees onto the trees with tall-growing tendencies. Cacao is actually very easy to graft.

I was interested too however seeds are very hard to come by and he's probably a few years off from getting any from that plant, it takes 5 years for the plant to produce fruit as long as it doesn't undergo too much stress. He did put a link in the description for the seedling he got off amazon, but if you're looking for an actual seed pod, look up Montoso Gardens, they're based in puerto rico and they've got a handful of different varieties to pick from, plus they sell grafted seedlings(normally march-april, might be a bit late for them now) but as long as they've got what you want on hand, they ship very fast, only took 3 days for my pods to arrive, and I'm in Ohio. I'd also recommend emailing them to find out if the type you want is self pollinating or not, bc you'll need to get 2 pods if not(they should make sure that those pods are from two different trees). If you're growing indoors, I'd suggest their smaller pods, or the grafted seedling.
