Thank you for sharing this. I dug up some of my friends clematis. I’ve never had any history with clematis so I wasn’t sure what would happen. This past spring I put the roots in a pot with some soil and it started growing and had one beautiful bloom on it. This past summer was very hot and although the vine was growing there weren’t any blooms. Well the weather has cooled down and I now have at least five blooms on it. I am going to also transfer it to a bigger pot. Thanks again

Exactly what i was looking for! Ive had a clematis in large pot for year. Fabulous up to last year then seems to be struggling now. So maybe not best time but i will be transplanting it soon into bigger pot. Thank you.

Hi Tom. I have three clematis in huge pots. I just cover w mulch which is very effective. This is their 2nd year & they grew much bigger & better.

Glad to hear that. My clematis is also growing faster since I repotted it to a large pot.

Hi, great video thank you. Need a bit of advice with 2 of my potted Clematis hope you dont mind. Both have lost all their leaves during this winter (2023) and they seem to be dead. Do i cut them right down to compost level and hope for the best...not sure...any advice would be very much appreciated. This is my first go at having Clematis! Ma y thanks. Babs
@tomsgarden10 ай бұрын
You're welcome. In answer to your question first of all it's most likely not dead as this is normal with clematis, and in terms of pruning, if your clematis flowers before early summer (June), do not prune it but if it flowers from late June onwards, prune in back hard in late winter (February) to the lowest pair of buds. Good luck!

How do you put another layer of compost if you use the gravel on top of the soil. Or do you just remove the gravel? What type of clematis is this? Does any kind of clematis survive in a pot?
@tomsgarden Жыл бұрын
I remove the gravel first before adding a fresh layer of compost. I’m not sure of the name of this clematis but its just started to flower a week ago and it tends to flower once a year. I dead head the old wilted flowers too to extend the flowering period. I think all clematis can be grown in pots as long as the pot is big enough. I’ll be uploading a short video update of this clematis shortly so you can see how well it’s grown since I transplanted it. Thanks for your feedback.

Is grit the same as gravel? Great video by the way. I just purchased my first clematis today and I was hoping I could put it in a pot.
@tomsgarden6 ай бұрын
Thanks. Grit is smaller than gravel and therefore better for providing good drainage in your soil medium than gravel. Good luck with your first clematis.

I was watching your video and I have a question. Do you have to take your Pot inside a garage and the winter time for your clematis?

No I don’t. I leave my potted clematis outside all winter.

Great idea! I just want to say that I can tell by the accent that you're probably in some part of England, born and raised there myself. I now live in Wisconsin, in the States. I have very heavy clay soil that has been a real challenge for me. I do however have no problem with growing clematis in the ground and my yard also has a slope so that area can get pretty wet. I do try to add as much compost to my soil as possible to amend it but I've only lived in this area for three years so it's a work in progress. You could dig a hole, add some gravel, put mesh on top and then good garden soil and then add the clematis on top so that it has good drainage in the ground. :)
@tomsgarden5 ай бұрын
Thank you and yes I do live in England. I agree that adding compost and gravel to soil will benefit a clematis plant as they are both good for improving drainage in heavy soil.

Most plants will survive in pots IF they are rated to survive 2 zones colder than where you are.
