Thank you, yeah it's 1 of the best colocasias you can get! I've occasionally seen young ones for $30 but 50 seems about normal- and that's half of what it used to be! It seems like ours has gone dormant for the winter. It has been interesting to see about half of our colocasia have gone dormant for the winter and the other half are still going strong. Not sure what the secret is yet

This video is amazing I didnt know there were so many kinds. I started growing esculenta bulbs last year im I'm in NYC so I had to dig them up for the winter so this summer I had a huge yard full of them. Now that i see this variety I'm going to look into some more but they grow so much I'm gifting a few bulbs to my neighbors

awesome nyc is a lot further north than i've ever grown but i have had most of my colocasia shipped and even though they really don't like being shipped compared to other plants, i've only lost 2 out of maybe 20 shipped and they're almost always ~$10 so it's not a huge risk. My fav right now is the Jenningsii and pharoahs mask

awesome! welcome- and if you are heading into winter like we are, you will probably have a hard time starting colocasia at this point - just to warn you not to be sad or disappointed if they start going dormant on you or not growing fast this late into the fall. They will grow crazy fast once there are signs of spring

Hey Emma, is Pink China the same as Hawaiin Punch? I have a bunch of those now- LOVE the bright red stems. I can tell you that the more light they get, the stronger the red becomes. I have a pic of them on our insta that i love. I can tell you that a heat source is probably going to be necessary if it is not getting hit with a lot of direct sun (that will warm the soil up). Some people use hot plates or heating pads or you can let it be dormant until the weather warms up, but I would be careful with watering if you aren't seeing good growth. Too much water while dormant can rot it.

Good info. My Mojito wa $55 for a miniscul tissue culture. Not much growth after a few months (5" pot). Leaves are still solid green.

Here in FL, 2021 you can find a 1 gal pot for ~20$ I had one mojito go solid lime-green for a few leaves at the beginning of winter and eventually revert back to black and green once I put it in the greenhouse

That's good to know, I've just been spreading coffee grounds once a week and worm castings in pots- haven't used any fertilizers in the beds this year, but next year I'll try them. I wonder why it reverted to green?!

Thank you for the tour! Who'd you buy from that gave you the infected plants? I purchased a Pharaohs Mask last year for $45. It grew great but now it is struggling to make it through the winter bc of being inundated with spider mites! This fall I'm letting them go DORMANT!! The most expensive Elephant Ear I've purchased so far, is the Monstera Thai Constellation I also bought it last year for $90. The spider mites are just now affecting it. I didn't see any Black Coral, Diamond Head, or Black Swan in your garden, do you have any of them? It looked like a New Guinea Gold potted in a container you walked by but didn't give any information on. It's nice to see that I'm not the only guy who enjoys plants, especially the tropical ones, but I live in N. E. Ohio!

I loved your idea for having the pebble tray. I did it with my Colocasia Mojito and it loved it, although I had to water every day and that got a little annoying for if we go camping etc. So decided to plant it in a 13.5 gallon fish tank with pea gravel creating a shelf with bigger rocks to keep the mojito pots with water up the pot a couple inches. So far so good!! Excited to see the growth, considering how much they enjoyed your idea already. I'm adding fish to the tank to fertilize them naturally as well. I love experimenting!!

Yeah it can get a little annoying and not work out too well for leaving town. That sounds like a great idea- I bet they will love that. I'd be interested to know if they can reach their full size in a mostly water medium. I have tried some in a pot inside a large, no hole pot that collects rainwater sometimes higher than the plant pot. They are doing good and putting up so many stalks, but leaf size is not as big as the ground-planted ones.

that kind of direct sunshine is great for any plant (so yes)! They love lots of water- if it never dries out you shouldn't have a problem. I have installed irrigation to water mine for about 3 min 4x a day. They will flop over and look sad when they are too dry. You can even give it more sun than that but 3 hours in the morning should be enough to get it growing well outside- if inside, you probably need more and I don't rec colocasia indoors. Illustris seem to be a very easy and very prolific variety. If it is in the ground in a hardy zone, it will be all over that spot next year.

Im having an issus with my Pharoah's Mask. Its a starter plant and the stems get so tall that they flop over and break. Besides adding supports is there anything I should do. Its in a small pot because it is so tiny right now. TIA.

i'm not claiming it is the best or fastest way possible to grow them, but in my backyard with my conditions, 3-4 hours of direct sun seems to be ideal and i think that's considered part sun. Less than 2 hours of direct sun seems to not be enough to grow big leaves. (And they get filtered sun the rest of the day.)

I'm in NJ a brought a colocasia. Not sure which one but after a couple of weeks it's started to turn yellow. Some people said yellow means to much water or to much sun .. any suggestions?

I'd need to know more to tell you why, but if there are no good, normal leaves left - only yellow- that is a sign that it's not doing well for some reason. Just yesterday i pulled out a bulb from a pot that had somehow rotted and had some bugs (first time thats happened to me!) but i had left the "dead" plant alone for a few weeks until yesterday- when i pulled out the bulb there were some tiny leaves growing out of the bulb - still fully covered by dirt, but hidden signs of life. I don't know what caused the yellowing, but i say all that to say, don't throw it away, keep it somewhat sheltered out of direct sun (so it won't dry out much) and wait and see. I don't think most Colocasia are hardy through the winter outdoors up in NJ, but you can dig out the plant, chuck into a pot in a garage and replant it in the spring.

guessing it's possibly a dry soil problem- is the plant base getting hit with sunlight? try mulch or irrigation or re-planting in a new location. Winning combo is lots of sun on the leaves, lots of shade or water on its soil

Yep! Some nurseries grow them as plugs in a tray of 1-2 inches of water and they can get big that way but in the ground, the best way is sun above the leaves shade down below at the roots.

Yes, they are some of the hardier colocasia. We used to live in TN where we had to dig them up or bring in pots, but here in N Florida z9a they survived some 20° weather without losing all the leaves.

Please offer me some advice on what to do when they are growing such long stems and sooo many that it makes the whole plant droop. I also have a gigantica that I grew from a bulb and am bringing it in for the winter. However, I fear that perhaps I need to repot it. Can you tell me how deep and how wide of pots these plants enjoy?

hey megan, typically, long stems mean it is reaching for more light. Is it getting direct sun? I've noticed that if they don't get any direct sun, they don't do well. I also have a pot packed too full of coal miner and the stems are growing long with small leaves even though it gets plenty of sun, so I think the amount of soil available also can affect stem length/leaf size when dealing with potted plants. It's not advisable to re-pot a plant before bringing it inside as the root system doesn't grow much in the winter indoors/low light. But I'm not sure where you're located- If anything, try putting it in a small tray of water or fill a bigger clay pot with some sphag moss and set your pot inside it like a double-potting

yes! i have thought about it. I would make it a waterfall pond. Mosquitos are the main reason i have stopped short of building one. I'm almost allergic to mosquito bites and they love my blood. If I could manage the amount of mosquitoes, i'd be all in.

yes, i've tried placing some colocasia pots up against the house (no direct sunlight) and they do well. The stalks will grow longer / leggier and growth isn't as fast but still grows well.
