Never had an issue with pollination. Wait for anther tops to dry ready to pollinate, cut with garden shears a handful, while competing with the honey bees. Grab silk and wipe with anthers. Manual pollination 100% yield. Tomatoes electric toothbrush on small flower stems. More tomatoes than you can handle. Same methods with most veggies. Manual method.

I would plant beans with the corn, just like the natives did. I do this and it works well, along with squash in the corn patch (3 sisters planting) to help shade the ground. The squash plants also keep raccoons and other animals out, as the stems are full of little spiny things that scratch quite well (my arms showed me that last year!). Beans are a nitrogen fixer, thereby fertilizing the corn all season long and not depleting your soil or compost. For a good, early-maturing heirloom sweet corn, try Simonet. It was developed in Edmonton several decades ago, and when planted in late May (in Canada, zones 2 and 3) it can mature early to mid August. I find it much better than the hybrid Peaches and Cream, plus you can save seed and successfully plant it year after year (if you plant enough, corn inbreeds quickly, so it's recommended to plant and collect from a minimum of 200 plants, they say 300 is much better).

Good luck on you growing corn. I grew corn and was very excited to get to the point of harvest . One morning I went out to my garden anxious to view the growth of my corn with its small ears of corn . The racoons had beat me there. Broken hearted I view my corn broken down with half eaten ears. That's when I decided I would buy my corn from the market. After setting traps I managed to relocate several racoons but in the country there are always more to take their place. Since then I have put a hot wire around my garden and chicken wire to keep out the rabbits with mostly good success.

We always fence our primary garden but that isn't enough. We always plant a sacrificial garden a little further away. Keep the critters fed with easy to access food and discourage them from the human food. Seeds are cheap. Plus you get to keepman eye on the wildlife.

Mr. Luke, How do you wayer your Garden? After years of research and attempts, I have learned that Buying a Drip Irrigation System from Rainbird (or whomever) REALLY makes a BIG DIFFERENCE! As compared to having to either get up at 0500 to set the sprinkler, or buy an Electronic Timer, you don't have to worry about water burning on the leaves! I set my ¼" Spaghetti Lines about 2" away from my seeds, and wter just once/or twice a week (depending on temperature) and am releived to know that the roots are given the Proper Amount of Water. Have you tried this? I originally used "Soaker Hoses" but they only lasted maybe 2 years. So, for the cost of a 20' Soaker Hose (~$15.00), I purchased a Drip Irrigation System that covers 100sqft and has lasted me 7 years so far! Thanks for your gardening techniques Luke! Take care, 🤓 -Thomas (Zone 8A/B) Port Orchard, Washington

I appreciate your videos, but I do have to call out some misinformation you gave here that is important to correct - some may have pointed this out already? I didn't read through the comments. You CAN over-apply nitrogen in an organic system with artificial fertilizers, and it can have just as devastating effects on the environment as conventional non-organic nitrogen sources. Just because it's organic doesn't mean it's naturally occurring in your system. Whatever the plant does not use/need will be washed away into the watershed, and it can result in eutrofication of waterways. I hope that you can edit that part of your video!

IMPORTANT, do NOT worry about nitrogen as much when you plant, only a little. Then at 3 inches, spray the soil with liquid nitrogen, then again when it breaks knee high, then again 15 to 18 days later. Like he said, don't over do it with the nitrogen all at once. Penn state is one of the best ag colleges in the world. They have actually broken the nitrogen use by the day and what day you should be spraying it. What I stated here is close but you don't have to remember the days. Mi is warmer than western pa earlier in the year. We have planted mothers day Saturday, and the next week. Our soil is acidic, we lime it in the fall.

Small crops need or greatly benefit from hand pollination. It can be a bit time consuming but when I plant 100 sq ft or less, I will hand pollinate and bag each cob. I also only harvest seed for next years crop only from stalks that have 2 or more cobs! That way when I have a smaller bed, I have a crop with plants with multiple cobs

Ive seen multiple seeds planted together, 3-4 at a time, as opposed to your individual method. Have you tried the former method with any better success?
