good info JIm. We had a landscaping company install about a dozen a few years ago. several died and half of the remaining ones have very sparse foliage. based on what you said I think they were planted incorrectly.Probably too deep and i doubt they added any amendment. they are planted around large pines in eastern nc. any suggestions? Also i put holly tone around them thinking they were evergreen. Is that too much sulfer for them?

I have a few that just popped up on our property. I think they were deliberate plantings but they are very leggy. How and when should I prune to promote better/more density?

As a nursery, is there any reason why would i carry the Daruma and the Crimson Fire? Is there any significant differences between them?

I'm in central Texas which I believe is in zone 8 and wanted to combine this with the Crem De Mint Pittosporum. I have two beds flanking the front of my house that are shallow and long (2' deep by 11' wide). Do you think 3 of one and 2 of the other would be too many shrubs? P.S. I really enjoy your videos and learn much from them.

I think it will be fine. If you can't find creme de mint, look for mojo pittosporum. Thanks for watching.

@@JimPutnam Thank you!! I failed to mention that I have a white stone house so I really want color for street appeal. Also, the windows are only two feet off the ground so I need low growing shrubs. So far, the beds do get 6-8 hours of sun but we've only lived here two months. Our house faces southeast and these are the front beds.

Do you have advice on how to prune to look like a hedge? We have three under a window in our front yard that have never been tamed and are a bit unruly. They have been well established. Our neighbor has a hedge, and I would like ours to look more like his!

It may be a different variety. Crimson fire wouldn't be a good choice for a hedge. You would want a variety that gets around 6 feet and then you can keep it whatever size but pruning a few times each growing season.

I planted 2 crimson fires this past Fall and one of them completely died and the other one's leaves turned green. I have not gotten any flowers. It gets sun most of the day and I do not usually water. I purchased another to replace the dead one and now some of its leaves are red. Do I need to water frequently? I live in South Carolina, not sure what zone that is. Help?!?

Hey Jim. I planted a line of these against my house in Atlanta early this spring. They've all turned green! I watered them early on, but I haven't watered them this summer. It's been raining so much. My yard is pretty shady under 3 large trees. Any ideas?
@JimPutnam

It definitely needs sun to hold its color. All Loropetalum are green in the shade.

Thanks for the response! I'm really disappointed. I wanted some color bc my house is already green. Any recommendations for something colorful to go against the house in a shady yard?

When is the best time to plant them
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
+Emma Sue Norvil Probably wouldn't matter unless you're in an area that is marginal for them. In that case the spring, but now if your in an area they are definitely hardy in.

Jim, I had plant 2 of these this past fall. We have had a lot of rain this year, one of the wettest years in history. In Dec they look fined. But then we got 14 inches of snow in Dec too. Couple weeks ago its got down to 9 degree with wind chill. I live in VA in Zone 7, as you said you wouldn't plant in the open. I planted then near Arborvitae that I planted back in march. Right now they look died. Some of the Leave are brown and curled. When i scratch the bark its purple in some areas and others its brown. Is there anything that i can to to help it survive? Or is the plant died, or should i just want until spring to see if anything happens?

Good question. All you should do now is wait for new growth. That may be in April. When you see new growth, you can prune them back some. If you don't see new growth by mid may they are likely not recovering from it.

I planted 5 of these last fall. All five of them show heavy signs of withering on the outer edge, and they have shrunken since they were planted. I live in Georgia. Do you think they will recover once the Spring arrives?

As long as the stems are still bendable without breaking they are alive. It will require patience though.
