I appreciate this video, although I wouldn't call it the perfect beginner plant! They don't come back every year like other bulbs which is the BIGGEST reason they aren't a beginner plant! I'd say bulbs that are a beginner plant are daffodils or tulips! You don't have to dig them up and they can handle really cold winter temperatures in the ground, but they only bloom for about two weeks. Dahlias are great because they take FULL SUN and give you fresh cut flowers all summer long! Great advice on how to protect them over the winter, Ian! Great video!

Thank you for your post. My courtyard is tiny and every inch needs to produce some degree of interest for an extended period of time. Dahlia give me 4 months of reliable flower production in the widest range of colors. I enjoy the annual lift and protection of the tubers.

@@PlantedwithIanCooke I shouldn't complain about taking them out of the ground. I wanted to explain to beginners that there is a vast difference between a dahlia and most other bulbs like daffodils, hyacinth, tulips, crocus, etc. Those come up at the very beginning of spring and last just a little while. Dahlias are very tall and need extra care, like being staked up because they get pretty tall like 1-2' (I'm in the states) and lots of water when it gets hot. We have used reflectors on a pole that you can stake into the soil and twist ties that you get in the produce dept. of a grocery store to secure them to the pole, but there are a lot of things you can use to stake dahlias.

Do Dahlia typically flower in your summer or your winter. I the northern hemisphere Dahlia can over winter in the ground in mild climates. I live in Connecticut and they will die if left in the ground. I lift mine in November, store them in cool dry place and plant them in pots in early March and plant them outside mid to late April. Have you grown dahlia before?

Excellent, thank you. 👌💕 I’m gardening here in Donegal, Ireland. on clay soil. I’m wondering will my dahlias be ok in the ground or would I be better off keeping them in large pots?
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 2 жыл бұрын
I would add old growing medium to your clay soils and plant your dahlia in the ground. They will receive consistent water when planted in the ground leading to more growth and more flowers. If the pots dry out for a weekend your plants will look sad.

@@PlantedwithIanCooke I read an article the other day that dahlias hate clay soil. And even though we have added massive amounts of medium to our clay soil it still dries very much like a clay. And has standing water when it rains hard. So this year I am trying my hand at growing dahlias in a pot. It’s my first time ever growing dahlias but I didn’t feel that they would do well in our soil. Would love to hear the results after planting them in the clay added medium soil. If it does well then I’d probably wanna plant them in our ground not in a pot. ✨🍃🌼🍃✨

@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke Жыл бұрын
Yes you can, but not all will grow. To save time put the bare tuber in a warmer environment before you pot it up and you will see buds appear from viable tubers. Pot up only those tubers that generate a shoot.

You plant after you last frost date outside in ground or you can start in a pot early but they must be kept in a frost free area. Water when you plant them outside. I water mine 2 or 3 times a week for the first month.

Great video, thanks I love growing Dahlia and Lilly I live in Kansas, usa, my yard soils nothing but hard CLAY, every year I add more top soils, but no use! I have no idea where the top soils goes! After a while, i face a yard and garden with nothing but hard CLAY!!! I keep losing the battle year after year!!! I begin to hate CLAY and don't know the porpoise of CLAY is ???!!! NO PLANTS, NO FLOWERS AND NO GRASS Growing!!! Also Kansas weather is very wishy-washy until first of summer, we have very severe winter extremely cold and extremely hot summer!!! What i do wrong??? Or what i need to do to keep the top soils every year i spend over a $1000 just for soils and before before summer is over, top soils are gone disappeared 😢! Also, do i have to pull out the roots out from garden and exam them and keep them in pot as you showed??? Please HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP, i am losing my mind Beside losing money 😢

Start small and gradually increase your garden area. I would add piles of leafs and other organic matter 18” high, plant in these next spring after they have rotted down. Use kitchen scrapes, mulch, leafs. This pile will provide a home for worms and other biologicals. Dahlia don’t like frost

Water demand is directly connected to water uptake rate of the plant and evaporation of the growing media. If there are no leafs then there is no demand. There is no fixed weakly amount

I live in Saskatoon Canada. Last fall, I removed dahlia tubers from ground, washed and put them under sun. The tubers collapsed. Even then I wrapped them in paper and stored in basement for winter. Do you think, they will be fine if I replant them in soil.
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 3 жыл бұрын
Healthy dahlia tubers feel similar to a potato - dense and turgid.. I have lost tubers most likely to being too wet and/or too warm. I have most success when the plant has 2 or 3 mild frosts to kill the top growth. I lift and let dry in the sun for a few hours in the afternoon and then place in very dry growing medium and keep at about 40 degrees F or 5 degrees. If your tubers are shriveled soak them in warm water for a couple of hours. If they are soft and mushy they will not grow.

I planted dahlias in early March in zone 8 in the southeastern U.S. . I was wondering if they need to be dug up and separated periodically or will they just spread and be left alone ?
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend you dig up a few tubers each year and overwinter them in a cool frost free environment. This way you can leave tubers in the ground covered with 12”+ of leafs and see if they survive, knowing you have safety plants. I would dig up all plants every few years and only keep the best tubers. Good luck

@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, long warm summer days. But the tuber will not survive outside in the ground in winter. It will freeze and die. I recommend you buy some established plants and get them planted in the ground by late May. Make sure they do not dry out and they will flower. In the fall you can choose to dig them up and overwinter them in a frost free basement.

The open base stll looks moist inside but no changes. Now I see 3 sprouts coming up close to the original base. Should I let all THREE grow now?

In my zone 5 in the United States, I want to know if I can put about 4" of straw over them and then cover the straw with burlap for the winter. Will this work?
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 3 жыл бұрын
Zone 5 can produce extended periods of cold. When it freezes at night and during the day the soil will freeze solid and kill the tubers. 4” of straw might work in sheltered areas and in some milder winters but when a true, normal winter occurs your dahlia collection will not survive.

What happens if you separated every bulb? Like I thought you had to? Im so gutted I might have messed up ..
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 2 жыл бұрын
Each tuber needs an ’eye’, The eye has the ability to readily produce new shoots. If you separate every tuber with the ability to sprout you will have lots of plants. I like to grow larger tuber clusters as this give me a larger plant in a shorter period of time and is likely to flower sooner. good luck

@@shellbell4836 I have limited space and would rather have a few larger clumps with lots of flowers. As with all plant tips and tricks you need to adapt the insight to suit your situation. If you have space you will be able to accommodate lots of small plants. I hope they all grow. With new dahlia plants it’s easy to over water them. Remember they have no roots or shoots so water demand in the first few weeks is minimal.

The watering rate is difficult to judge. Once potted lightly moisten the growing mix. Too much water and they will rot. As leafs emerge increase water volume. Do not kill with kindness. Good luck

You keep your Dahlias in a cold greenhouse during winter, right? What is your coldest temperature?
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 3 жыл бұрын
Tine, thank you for your question. Temperature is a variable measurement. If your growing medium is very dry it will act as insulation and further protect your tubers. If it is wet then it will conduct cold temperatures and damage the tubers. My green house is frost free, that is a 400w heat bulb will switch on at 35 F or 2C and stay on until 45F. Resist the temptation to save every tuber - just store the strongest and healthiest and store in dry growing medium in a cool yet frost free environment.
