Thankyou Jim. This has become my replacement shrub for all the winter casualties. I have part sun part shade conditions and these are beautiful and easy. I'm in Zone 8 / E. TX.

Everything I could possibly ask for you answered in this video. I am a landscape designer and didn't know what happened to my Dwarf Yaupon Holly when I put it into the ground. We are all Limestone in North San Antonio, TX. I have decided to line my driveway with 12 of these (6 on each side) and we have deer so its good to hear that they are deer proof. So now the question. I planted all of them and one of them started to lose its leaves. I pulled apart the rootball before planting them and did the mixing of soil also and elevated the,. Not sure what happened but I went to Garden Store and purchased another.

So i haven't gotten a response yet from my earlier question. So now I've replaced one of the Dwarf Yaupon Holly's and it too is browning.....Not sure why! I did everything you said to do when I planted it in the ground. Pulled apart the root bound plant....put some soil from the pot into the bottom and added more potting soil around the plant. I'm watering once a week on a drip system for 15 minutes. Now I have started watering twice a week for 15 min. I'm gonna see what is going on there!!!I have 12 total and they have been in the ground maybe 2 months.

It's a native north american plant with caffeine, antioxidants on par with blueberries, and theobromine. It should be cultivated for consumption to reduce the environmental impact of other caffeine sources (tea and coffee).

I will give these a try on the north side of my house. The area gets about 3-4 hours of sun in the summer and very little sun in the winter.

Saw a formal hedge of Yaupon holly the other day and couldn't tell it wasn't a boxwood until the owner said so. Gorgeous hedge, though he didn't say what variety of Yaupon it was. The upside was that he had a lifetime supply of tea right in his yard. Yaupon tea is fantastic on a hot summer day!

Hi I live in Florida and the landscape guy found 5 ilex shillings and planted in front of my house but only one survived, the rest looks dead. One of them actually has 3 green leaves. Should I throw them away or wait until September to see if the rainy season will help them recover? Thank you

Seriously considering planting one in my N. ATL home, for making tea. Anyone know if the dwarf and some other cultivars have the caffeine in the leaves?

I realize that I'm seeing your comment here two years after you left it, so I apologize for trying to drag you back to an old conversation. I'm similarly interested in growing yaupon holly for caffeine. A few years back I came across Yaupon Brothers Tea, and have been enjoying yaupon tea ever since. Since then, I discovered a related operation in the Mississippi Delta near Clarksdale - Yazoo Yaupon. I was able to tour their "tea maze", and what I saw there appeared to be this dwarf "nana" cultivar. I'm in Middle Tennessee, and am eyeing planting a test hedge here in the spring. I'd also love more info on this native source of caffeine - I was hoping in these two years since you left this comment that you'd gained some experience/info - anything to share? Also, anyone else seeing this, including Jim with this channel, I'd love any input you may have. Thanks, and great video!

Thank you for this video. I have huge dwarf Yaupon hollies and you are right that they require virtually NO care. I love them for this reason! My question today is, "can you 'limb-up' dwarf Yaupon holly bushes?" I have only seen this done one time on smaller dwarf Yaupon holly and it was extremely appealing. I would like to plant some smaller perennials under the holly, which would lend shade to the flowers. I have been unable to find any videos or information on the web about this. Can you address?

If most if the nurseries are selling make plants, how do you get a female so you can have berries? I like that and the birds do, too. Also, how would one know the difference?

Can I ask If these are poisonous to dogs. I understand they don’t have berries but we have a new puppy and I am concerned. We actually just bought them today and can probably exchange them. We purchased 4 Taylor’s Rudolph for the front. It seems they do make berries and I assume they would be toxic. Just trying to be safe.

Hi Jim, I continue to enjoy watching and re-watching your videos. We have several Yaupon Hollies in our landscape. Some of them have small white flowers on them. They also have tall spike branches on them and I would like to trim them back so they aren't so spindly looking. Do I have to wait till the flowers stop blooming? If so how long will I need to wait? Thank you for all the great videos. Jim, I was getting ready to watch your video on Rose Creek Abelia and noticed the beautiful flowers on the one you had. I think I "miss" understood what my landscaper told me what I thought were Yaupon Hollies. After going back out and looking at the plants, I believe they are actually Rose Creek Abelia. On each side of the Abelia there are Yaupon Hollies. Some of the Yaupons do have a real tiny purple flower. I looked at your web site and don't see where pictures can be sent to you, though I figure you are busy enough with doing the videos and your business, not having time to read email and look at picture. Thank you agin.

I have what I believe are 3 yaupon hollies in my front yard ... I used one of those picture apps and that’s what they called them. I’m really new to gardening and for years I just assumed they were boxwoods because of how they are pruned and there are no berries. I’d love to get to berries though. How would I know if I have males or females, and should I prune them all the way back to get some new growth?

Only certain varieties of dwarf yaupon will produce berries. Schillings Dwarf (male) and Nana (female) are most common I've seen. Nana might produce some berries, but I have not witnessed that. There is another cultivar called Taylor's Rudolph, but I've struggled locating any.

I bought a little one of those with the intent of making a bonsai, I pruned it and wired it to shape it, some of the little branches sort of separated from the main trunk but are still attached. This happened about three weeks ago, I have been watering it still in the nursery pot every night. Now most of the little leafs have wilted and the shrub looks very poor. I'm sorry, any recommendations?

Are there any more native shrubs you would reccomend? I'm from Arkansas and trying to figure out what hedge I can plant for some privacy. The issue is that there is sort of a background road infront of us. Probably about 42 inches away from the road. Which would be around 3ft and 6inches. It might be a tiny bit father away than that, but I'm making a guess right now on how far it is. Do you have any suggestions? I don't want to plant anything that would mess up the road, but like to plant something that can give me some privacy and that is also a native.

Jim, I would like to use this holly in a 12 inch square and about 15 inch deep self watering container for my front porch. It gets about 4 hours sunlight there. Is this a good choice or would the soft touch holly be better? Just looking for a slow growing green (not yellow/gold) low mounding evergreen for long term use. I am in zone 8b. Thanks much - just love all your videos.

No stickers, and you can make tea from the leaves. The berries only come on the female plant. The variety in the vid is male, and you'll need at least one to pollinate the female dwarf variety if you can ever find one.
