I have giant allium bulbs... ready go be planted but I was wondering if I were to put it in a container how big would it have to be? I have a 2 gallon sized pot that i think may be too small but would like your opinion.

I had my first go at the Globemaster Aliums and was really happy with them and very low maintenance I had also found out that when they are done flowering you can snip them off and spray paint different colors makes for a fun little project

Why are my Purple Sensation alliums starting to grow again now in early September? I live in zone 6a, Michigan. Should I cut the little green stems back or just let them grow? I love your channel and all the info. you and your wife pass on to all of us. Thanks so much, and God bless.

I have Allium Millenium just starting to flower in the front garden border right now. I am in Melbourne Australia where it is the start of summer. I bought it a month or two ago in a pot and sheltered it on a patio until early November when it started sending up flower shoots so I planted it in the garden, in filtered sun in a woodland garden bed. It is looking beautiful so far and the bees quickly found it. :)
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Thanks for that. What's your temperature this time of year?
@neverlostforwords6 жыл бұрын
@@JimPutnam Well today it was 38 degrees C! :) However generally it is between 10 to 15 minimum overnight rising to 18 to 25 max during the day. With the hot weather of the past two days, the allium flowers grew so quickly I could almost see them move. I watered the heck out of the garden yesterday and today as it was incredibly windy - like a hair dryer on hot. That allium did not seem to mind at all - the hot gusty wind and high temperature and the frequent watering did not bother it one bit.

Planted my globe masters back in November 2022 here in Houston Texas… out of the 10 that I planted only 3 grew but only to about 6 inches…. The rest rotted and we’re worn and centipede magnets…. Could it be that i have to check for clay in my flower bed, would I be better off planted somewhere else in my front yard or could it be the climate here in Houston?

Hey Jim! Lots of folks show how to fertilize when planting, but I’ve never seen how someone should fertilize an established bed. When the time comes could you do a video on that? Appreciation from Rainy Alabama.

I will for sure. I did last year as well. A lot of people are over fertilizing anyway. Thanks for watching.

This was a timely video!! Got my shipment in 3 weeks ago and was hoping to learn what to properly do before trying to dig a hole. Wish me luck in that!! Rocks will try and stop me but there is one area where we have mulched thick last 5 years and I think maybe I can get them then.

Perfect timing! Will be planting mine this weekend. It’s been 5 yrs I wanted alliums & finally could get a set! I’ve got a pogo stick style digger for bulbs that goes only to 6 inches. Is that deep enough for my alliums? I’m central CA, so no hard frosts. Thanks for all the helpful info!

I see tha post stamp is Dec. It is now January and I had brought these in at the beginning of January is it too late to plant now in zone 7. I also brought daffodils and tulips at the same time and planted those. I was trying to decide where to plant them I am trying to deter deers from my future garden but these are so tall I don't want to block out anything.

3:38 now you are mixing the pine bark because of the clay I’m assuming? Would you recommend the same mix with clay soils for oak leaf hydrangea? I’ve got a 64x40 full sun area that I’m looking to create interest in varying heights and seasonal bloom times but have minimal space to work with.

You move them after the foliage has mostly faded in the summer. It needs that energy from the foliage so wait for it absorb it.

How long or when is the best time to "clean up" the area after the alliums bloom? Last month I planted my very first bulbs in certain areas and I have a bunch of these, I want to make sure they come back the year after but I keep hearing I need to let all leaves die on their own....? Thank you!

I'm in PA Zone 6b. I planted hundreds of bulbs this year for my 1st time. I used an auger bit and it DID save me time and effort. I planted a whole lot of crocuses in the grass in front of a bed for a naturalized look. The auger bit drilled right through the grass easily, although we had a heavy rainfall year...so maybe that played a part? I had my 4 yr old scatter the bulbs out in the turf and then I drilled holes wherever they were. I didn't get all of my other bulbs planted yet....still have about 300 more. I'm refrigerating the remaining ones until Spring and plant them in planters then. My question is about the bulbs in planters. After their foliage dies back in 2019.... How do I store those bulbs? Do you recommend planting those in the GROUND for blooming the following year 2020? THANK YOU 🙏💚 SO MUCH for your videos! 🤗 I appreciate your time and all of the information. Very helpful and interesting. 😎👍
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
Go ahead and transplant them when the foliage dies back. They actually don't like to be dry stored, but it is the only way to sell them. They are basically dying from the time they are dug in Holland until they are put in the ground every year.

I planted Purple Sensation allium bulbs. The first year they had lovely big flowers. The second year the plants were much smaller and not all of them flowered. This year they also very small and disappointing. They are planted good, well composted soil. I pick off the heads after flowering and feed once a year with chicken pellets. What am I doing wrong?

Great video! , I just bought 4 allium christophii in a pot and had to divide them as they were really close together, I potted them separately, the bulbs are only about 2 inches in size, does this mean they won't produce as big a flower, do they take a few years to turn into a big bulb?

@southerncharmed41184 жыл бұрын
Andrew Jones what a condescending comment. It has nothing to do with being lazy, when you have lots of so called “small holes”, and your digging in soil that’s hard as a rock, you’d be an idiot not to use an auger. You must be that idiot!
@lburg37803 жыл бұрын
I tried to use one of these for my clay soil. My drill started smoking and I made little progress. But for some soils those augers are necessary when your soil is brick hard. Wish my soil was a little softer so I could use one.
