How To Grow Frogbit

A few simple tips on how to grow frogbit.
Frogbit is an easy beginner top floating plant for aquarium hobbyists.
With a little care and the correct conditions this plant will spread like crazy.
Like most aquatic top floating plants it does not do well when the tops of the leaves become overly saturated with moisture. The leaves of frogbit are naturally hydrophobic but continued exposure to water can cause the leaves to rot and melt away.
The ideal filtration for this plant would be simple sponge filters or filtration that does not have a return outlet that will push the plants under the surface of the water.
Most aquarium lids are tight fitting and can accumulate moisture in the form of condensation. Condensation can build and drip onto the tops of the plants causing excess moisture on the leaves. Providing a gap in the lid to allow for excess moisture to escape can help with this issue.
Frogbit does not require high powered lights but does will with medium light. Most aquarium lights will be sufficient for healthy growth.
Frogbit is a water column feeder, meaning it will send roots out into the water to absorb nutrients from the water column. Heavy fertilization or C02 is not needed.
Propagation of these floating plants is easy, they will send off runners with new baby plants attached. With the proper environment you will have an endless supply of frogbit to share with your other tanks or friends. It is also a great way to supplement the cost of aquarium keeping. Portions can be sold locally for an easy income.

Beautiful tank, I wondered if my shrimp or snails were eating the frogbit, saw some pin holes on the leaves. Now I have a sponge filter, and softer flow, everything’s better. Thanks 👍

Lovely tank, thanks for the info. I had pin holes and munch marks in the underneath of the frogbit, thought my shrimp were eating it. It’s better now I’ve moved it to another tank with low flow sponge filter. Thank you!

What plants would you recomend for a tank with a HOB filter? I'm very interested in frogbit but my HOB filter would kill it :(

I had frogbit in a tank with a hang on back and it did ok as long as it didn’t go underneath the overflow. Most floating plants do not like overhead water. I could recommend some non floating plants if you like.

I got rid of it exactly because of that... Had to cut the roots way too frequently and anytime the leaves got wet it just died off :) So rolling with duckweed only now. But cool plant definitely :)

Any floating plants, java moss, subwassertang, guppy grass, hornwort, or anacharis are all good choices.

Whats the best fert for floating plants. I have flourish and flourish advance, and APT complete. I have frogbit, salv minima and giant duckweed coming. Any suggestion on which of those i should use, or just 1 or 2 or all of them. I have a 15g fluval flex and just 2 small feeding rings to keep them contained. I dont want them everywhere...any suggestions?

Honestly I wouldn’t worry about ferts. Floating plants are very low maintenance

I bought some lid risers that will lift the hood 1 inch, but i have choprae danios that like to jump and i dont want to use those risers if i can avoid it

Sounds like Frogbit wouldn't do too well in Washington State outside, if the tops don't like being wet. My turtle would love some though.

Sean Kiesser they’re hydrophobic so they should do ok with the rain. I think the colder temps would get to them though. Definitely a warmer climate plant

can frogbite grow under direct sunlight? which is subject to rain water and wet the leave?

I would only be concerned about the water on top of the leaves.

@@PoseidonsPets my frogbite turn into yellow while there is blooming of algae, not sure is the algae causes frogbite dont grow nice
