How to Grow & Harvest Green Beans for Profit

Hey everyone! I'm back with a harvesting video as requested by a viewer in the comments! I'll be talking all about the best practices for growing, harvesting, packing, and selling green beans. This will be really helpful to you whether you are a home gardener or a small farmer wanting to make a profit on green beans. I'll even touch on some farmer market strategies at the end of the video.

I just planted mine yesterday, I plant Jade Bush Beans and they do well in my garden, three rows in two beds. My old 60 year old back is killing me but it’s worth the bounty. Mine will be canned again this year. I’m planting early, wish me luck.

🤩 I moved from San Diego to South Dakota. I am struggling at the few farmers markets here…HOWEVER, you are ABSOLUTELY correct about sticking with it. I’m preparing for the next season for all the things I was asked for at all 3 I attend-I have been asked for green beans, tomatoes and a few different kinds of squash. I sold more butternut squash than eggs, but that’s fine. I weighed them by pound and likewise, in front of them. I’m loving your explanation and setup-no trellises!!! I’ve got the profitable time😉. I learned the pull-up technique through a lot of picking wrong🤪 I grabbed some low ones and found out. Yeah-pick in the morning, it’s a draining and grueling chore to chose the heat of the day🥵😒. Thanks for the tips and confidence booster!

Thanks for great tips! I will definitively be growing these next season. You should look into using biodegradable bags. They cost a bit more but for the environmentally conscious customer, it's a big plus!

You're welcome! Nice I hope they grow well for you! Thanks for the suggestion I have been considering that more lately. I just looked it up and found this amzn.to/2NlYx4g. I can't find the smaller type bags I use in biodegradable though. It's 7.5 cent per bag for bio-D about 3x the cost of the plastic ones I use. But it's not that much more in the big scheme of things. So I may switch someday soon. I also want customers to become more responsible and bring their own bags, that's part of the problem in my opinion too. All responsibility and is put on the farmer but why can't the customer be part of the solution too. The farmer's margins are already small enough as it is. But we must ultimately cater to our customer and they demand convenience and therefore bags lol. The cost of the biodegradable bags will go down overtime as well.

Hi, I usually foliar feed once a week with fish Hydroslate fertilizer (2-3-1) after the flowers first appear to boost the yield and give the plants energy to produce great beans. A blended formula with north Atlantic kelp also has benefits.

Cool shirt. You mentioned going to seed. Can you go over gathering seed for next planting; how to replant from a previous crop?

Thanks. I don't think I have any footage about it and I'm not planning on collecting the seed this year. Maybe I can find something to do show seed saving on. But basically you just grow the plants for an extra month. Let the bean pods get plump then they dry out to a light brown color. They crack open easily and the purple developed seeds pop out. Then you just plant them as you would any other bean.

Nice Joseph! Ya if I wasn't in a wealthy big city I probably couldn't get such high prices. Even though beyond organic green beans are worth $5/lb in my opinion. Conventional green beans taste disgusting and are sprayed relentlessly.

Mine started flowering about a week and a half ago. About how long after they start flowering do they start producing beans? Also, this week my pole beans started flowering, I'm assuming that the same rules of time after flowering would apply?

I've been growing green beans for just two years. I rotate my crops to try to avoid pests and diseases. But my beans are constantly attacked by something that eats holes in the leaves and sometimes in the beans themselves. I do not want to use chemicals but neem oil and Safer soap isn't doing the job. I think it gets even hotter where you are. If it gets near 100 the leaves will burn and the plants production will plummet. In that recent 100 degree heat it smoked my beans and I got half the harvest of a normal bed. My other friend who has farmed in Lakeside for 7 years stops planting beans at this time. June is the last month for harvesting them, then wait until October I'd say to be a lot safer. Having said that I have some beans going right now and they are doing great. It's just a gamble if the heat comes. But if you want to experiment it wouldn't hurt, but that's my warning trying to plant them now. Maybe there are some varieties that could take the heat, but provider can't.

Steven, As always you give great advice and the reasons behind it. My Farmette is 2.5 miles from the beach and does not get as hot as it does in Lemon Grove where you are located. I am going to try a row of beans and see how they do. I am very close to Wild Willows farm and they have started their Broccoli already. I will let you know how the beans grow in my micro-climate.

Oh wow I had no idea it was that close to the beach I was picturing a completely different climate. Ya I think that's a great idea to try sowing them. I did lots of experiments this first year pushing the limits of the seasons to see what I could get away with, so that in my second season I know my major cut off points for crops. Hiya. I missed what density you plant them at. Do you do two or three rows? Also, I remember a video of Curtis when he visited someone that harvested the whole bush bean plant in one go to save on labor. Can anyone point me in the right direction on that one?

Hey Michel, I do 2 rows in a 30" bed. In the summer they will pump beans hard for 2 weeks. I'd feel like I was wasting yield if I just pulled the whole plant. But maybe the variety they grow makes more sense for that. The providers I grow pump for 2-3 weeks straight.

If you plant enough beans, you will have enough to harvest every day. But you have to plant a lot! Also, dont pick every single ripe one. Leave some for the next day. That's how they do it

I'd like to see the price list for other organic vegetables at your famer's market. Perhaps the next time you show us your tomatoes you could mention a price in passing. My local farmers market is not open for as many months as yours. And the prices are lower.

What would cause bush beans to fruit too early? I have plants with less than 5 leaves and under 7 inches tall that are growing a few beans and they're just falling over from the weight of the beans.... :(

This is my first year growing a garden. Of course i was plagued with every insect, powdery mildew and some identifiable grasshopper. i was ready to give up until i saw some one use Hydrogen peroxide. wow it made my leaves so strong that the bugs all left. I know it sounds crazy but it works. Have you tried it?

Two rows about 18 inches apart. Seeded with an earthway seeder using the bean plate. The spacing of the bean plate is about 2-3" I think.

Because they are bush beans and don't require one. If you do 2 rows 18" apart they will rest on each other and don't require a trellis.
