I have a couple of Heuchera plants. I never thought to start these from seed. I have only seen the two kinds I already have. I am going start more to spread around. I love this!

I didn't know they grew so easily from seed, that's easier than cuttings. Way easier.

Hi, I could use some advice from anyone willing to help. I have a strange relationship with this plant. I've never cared about gardening until recent years so I don't know much about it. KZbin has helped me tremendously though. My wife's great grandmother cherished her coral bells so when she came to America she brought them with her. Her kids took cuttings from the original plants and grew them at their homes and passed them down to each generation as a family tradition. Now I am the caretaker of these special flowers and it has not been very easy for me. There are coral bell plants that have lived here at this house for 40 years, planted by my wife's mom, so I know they can survive here. But they don't spread themselves out at all and I want to make them spread. My goal is to have them planted all around the house, not just in the small flower garden. They seem to only want to stay in their little clumps and they never grow any new plants from dropping seeds. It took me a few years to get a cutting to grow and survive but I finally feel confident with propagation using this method. However, I have never had luck collecting the seeds and growing them from seed, and I really want to understand how to do this. I think if I can master the gathering of the seeds and how to successfully grow them from seeds then I can end up with coral bells all over the place. I would very much appreciate any tips that anyone can give me on collecting seeds from this flower, and any other tips would be welcomed. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for sharing.. you can try and look for seed after they flower.. the thing is some seed may be sterile... hard to know... propagation from division would be easier and much faster I feel.. when you pull off a section of the plant down to the main area you can then pot them in soil and wait for them to root.. they will need shade while settling in to their new pot.. and keep moist.. hope that helps..

Great video! Lots of good information! Any tips on harvesting the seeds?

You know this is something I have not done, but will be looking for seeds this fall. I would harvest in the late season after flowering and the blooms have dried..
@plantnewbie51882 жыл бұрын
Wait until the flowers are done at the end of the season and you can see that they look crusty. Tug on the stem and it will release from the plant. If it doesn't release, it's not ready. I have a short video on my channel demonstrating how I do it.

It is such a delicate looking plant, but they seem to be pretty hardy. I would have liked to see what the seeds look like...

My heuchera never really “fill in”very much. They seem like they’re just hanging in there. Any advise? The get some afternoon sun, but never look puffy. Do they only last a couple years do you know? Thank you, great video!!

diane, question for you not related to this video. I have tons of hosta seed pods. can I pick them now and dry them out in a bowl on my back patio or do I have to wait until the pods turn black. last year I waited untl the pods were brown but they opened up and I lost most of the seeds to the wind. just curious.

@ Diane Mumm . Where can I purchase Heuchera seeds Forever Purple I want to mix them with flowers in my next years wall containers so I do not want mature plants at that stage..I want them small and short to start off so they mingle with the other flower plants I am going to choose to enhance the small Heucheras. Thank you.

I would have loved to have seen from the seed stage. Mine is not germinating 3 weeks after putting them down?
@dianemummvideos3 жыл бұрын
sorry... sometimes it is hard to do everything in a video.. are you providing light for germination? these seeds are really tiny and don't need to be buried with soil.. Heuchera pods contain TONS of very tiny seeds! - but don't cover them with soil, because they need light to germinate. A light misting of water is enough to settle them into place to finish the job. Seeds typically germinate in about two weeks.

Hi, how old are the seedlings at the time of first transplant (1:00)?

Did you use a heat mat to start your heuchera?
@dianemummvideos Жыл бұрын
I usually didn't with some of my perennial seed... these are tiny seeds , do not cover and light for germination..

I planted some mixed Coral Bells and they are growing but very slowly. I just wanted to know if this was normal? I have them on a germination mat and under a grow light. I'm new to growing things from seeds.
@dianemummvideos6 жыл бұрын
Hi Teresa, you can take them off the mat once they germinated.. I don't remember them being slow, how did they turn out..?

Is it possible to keep these inside over the winter months in a big pot?
@dianemummvideos10 жыл бұрын
tnttruax honestly haven't done so... many perennials need a resting period.. Heuchera does stay evergreen all winter in my area... outside... so I don't have a answer I always tell people try it and see..
@plantnewbie51882 жыл бұрын
Yes, I keep them indoors all year.

Hi, what fertilizer I suppose to use?
@dianemummvideos3 жыл бұрын
I usually don't use much , but maybe fish emulsions , compost tea I like a more natural fertilizer..
@plantnewbie51882 жыл бұрын
They don't require much at all. Any basic flower food will be fine and they generally only need it once or maybe twice a year.
