Just a helpful hint about pot hosta. Put in containers that flairs out and not in to be able to remove root ball. You will have to break pot to get out if it gets to crowed. Crowed hosta at some point will start to die out in the center so you'll want to replant.

I just purchased a bare root hosta. This is one of the fastest growing plants I've ever owned. It didn't even look like a plant at first but in less than a weeks time it has three leaves.

Great info. Thanks so much for the tips. I never thought to pot hostas. We don’t have much shade but I can sit the pot underneath a tree or taller plant. It’s sunny and hot here in North Texas. Summer gardening is a challenge. Again thanks for the tips. 🪴

I agree they do grear in containers, I’ve done it for years and like you, I love how we can design with them, weaving then into our other garden and patio plantings. A smaller hosta or part of a division is also a nice element in a mixed floral urn or pot. I’m going to suggest one thing and disagree with another, both are intended only constructively: -First: larger pot for the hosta you filmed here, please. If nothing else, you’ll water less and that guy will put on better growth. You won’t kill it in this current pot-you can’t kill them easily, period. But you’ll water less. If you are watering twice-daily an essentially drought-tolerant plant? Go up a couple sizes. Secondly, Plant Tone as a slow-release fertilizer makes no sense to use twice a month. They don’t need much anyway, much less twice a month.

Great video! I actually left an autumn frost hosta in a container and it's growing back. I hadn't thought about adding plant tone but will definitely start doing so. Thank you for the tips!

Thank you for this video. I planted a Hosta on a container this season for the first time and I was thinking n getting another one since i was gifted a beautiful big pot. Now, I know hostas go dormant in winter on low zones, how was for you guys. You had to move her indoors or left her in the garden? To me probably will stay green the whole year. Now do they need some kind of feedings, not sure if Ambrose mention it. I’ll have to watch again.

Hello! Hostas do loose all foliage in winter in our area. We leave them out in the containers. Hostas love to have a cold winter so it’s another great reason why growing them in containers in Warmer zones benefits them. We do fertilize them once a month once we see foliage with Plant Tone from Espoma Organics. Then we stop fertilizing once night temperatures start to cool down in fall so they can go dormant for winter. 💚💚💚💚💚💚

Thanks for this video! Question..would you bring inside for winter or let it die back?
@GardenObsessions
@GardenObsessions 2 жыл бұрын
We leave them out for winter they are hardy 3-9 and in our warmer zone 7b hostas benefit from being out in containers for winter time. Once the leaves start to die back they can be trimmed back or just left alone. 💚

Will they survive the winter in a container? A winter where the pot might freeze to -20c?
@GardenObsessions
@GardenObsessions 9 ай бұрын
At that temperature they probably would be best planted in the ground or in frost proof containers. Hosta loves the cold temperatures we love them in containers because we live in warmer climate and that helps them in our gardening zone.

Can I leave a hosta in a planter through an Illinois winter? It gets pretty cold here I just bought three hostas this week.
@GardenObsessions
@GardenObsessions 6 ай бұрын
You can bury your hosta out of the container and replant it in late winter early spring. Or bring the container into a garage. It gets a bit colder in Illinois than when we were in Virginia.

If you use potting soil, does your pot still need to be able to drain the excess water?
@GardenObsessions
@GardenObsessions 2 жыл бұрын
Good drainage is very important when planting in pots or plants will eventually root rot. So yes even when using potting soil. Good quality potting soil helps retain the moisture that plants need in containers. 💚

They can be cut back before winter or when the first frost has done away with foliage. Sometimes I just wait till spring to clean them up. 💚💚💚💚💚💚

Do you bring them indoors in winter in their pots?? I’ve tried contains in Colorado but they don’t survive winters in their pots
@GardenObsessions
@GardenObsessions 2 жыл бұрын
We leave ours outdoors. Hostas are very hardy all hostas in our garden are hardy zones 3 - 9. In warmer climates they actually benefit growing in pots and staying out in winter time. Perhaps it gets to cold in your area and they will be more protected in the ground than pots. If in pots I would use frost proof containers to protect their roots in winter. 💚

What kind of soil did you say you use? Also, it seems the container you are using for that Hosta isn’t very big. What size is that and will I have to replant it from a container that size to keep it healthy? If not, that’s great news, actually. Thanks

can we have the hosta indoor?
@GardenObsessions
@GardenObsessions 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Hosta can be grown indoors in the growing season located in bright light. Should be fed in the growing season with plant tone from Espoma Organics once a month as we do when growing outdoors as well. Hosta does need a dormancy period indoors should be in a place at least 40 degrees and mulched. The plant will drop all leaves. The roots need a good cold winter to keep growing into a big beautiful plant. In hotter climates growing in pots is actually good for them to feel that cold. At some point it’s good for them to go outdoors so they can grow. 💚

Pour a thick boarder of salt around the base of the pot really when it rains or put it on the rim of the pot get some tape fold it so it's double sided an sprinkle salt on that

I've heard that diatomaceous earth (containing very small sharp edged fossils) sprinkled around the base of plants slits the slugs' bellies as they crawl over it and kills them before they can climb up the plant stems. (This is assuming they can't access the leaves directly.) Also a shallow bowl of beer is suppose to attract and then drown slugs I believe.

We have a small pond that invites frogs into our garden they have showed up and they take care of slugs and other insects. The frogs hang out under the hosta leaves to cool off and don’t give the slugs time to destroy the foliage. We also use IV Organics spray on the hosta leaves. That’s how we keep slugs away. 💚
