I’ve literally never been able to grow basil indoors, and this video explained every issue I’ve had. Although my house doesn’t have any south facing windows, I have a pretty strong grow light so I can finally germinate basil properly. :)

Its unreal how fast basil germinates and grows if given enough heat. I haven't even found light to really be an issue. Its like microgreens. Any south facing window is perfectly fine. Just be careful of some leaves that actually touch the window...they could get "cold burn". Other than that, indoor basil simply rules. I'd eat desserts made out of basil, LOL!

Good video, the only thing I’d include is when & how to prune it as we don’t want the basil going to seed! I usually start pruning @ 8”, only one stem/leaf section down. Then it will usually create 2 more stems & leaves for each topping off. As it grows more sections up I do this every few sections to prevent the plants from wasting energy going to seed & not growing the leaves we want. Plants going to seed also taste bitter. 👍

Although the temperature is not that much bad in Malta but the problem is here in my country electricity is expensive . So i wait for coming summer . They do die in winter in-fact i do have one right now but it is already start to wilting . My idea is that i collect basil during season and put it in jar full of oil . This my mother had taught me and it does work a lot even mint and even eggplants and olives . Oil is a natural preservative . Thanks for sharing

Hi there :) I’m a total beginner at gardening and I love aromatic herbs. I already managed to grow some mint from a store bought bunch and today I’d like to try basil from seeds. I have questions lol - can i germinate the seeds in a plastic container with a wet paper towel to then transfer the seedlings to a tray? I tried this for my iceberg lettuce. - I already live in a tropical region (Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean) is heating necessary or can I just put the container where it’s nice and sunny? I live your channel and the way you explain things so precisely and effectively :) thank you for creating great content
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Hey Sarolia, thanks for stopping by! I don't think you need extra heat if you're already in a tropical area. My thoughts are to not germinate then transfer.....the seedlings are small and delicate, not like tomatoes and peppers. I would germinate in the soil/container that you plan to grow them in. I was told Basil thrives on tons of water. I water it fairly regularly while also getting the most sunlight. The stems for some reason start to brown and harden and the leaves wilt or turn brown like they’re getting burnt. Aphids have been an issue but I regularly pick through my little basil plants to keep them away. Does Basil need a specific pot? And does it really need a specific kind of soil? It’s apparently an easy herb to grow but I struggle keeping them alive.
@JM.TheComposer

Stems turning brown and dying sounds like a fungal issue. Maybe you are overwatering. Make sure you bottom-water to reduce this kind of thing.

Spritz/spray with some diluted soapy water water. Or a sponge with all the sopay bubbles foam, directly on affected areas. Then rinse off a min later . The soapiness/bubbles/foam will dissolve the greenfly from the outside in. Their skin is water based and cant handle the soap. As a buddhist i dont condone this but as a gardener i kind of do.🤔

Dang, sorry to hear that. Could be the white-fly that took them down, could be the environmental change from outside to inside that did it, or a combination. What did they look like when they died? Did they go yellow/brown and dry up? Or did they darken, but stay green and wilt?

Definitely Areej. While many of these plants tolerate some cooler days during their growth, for germination they often won't do anything until certain moisture and temperature thresholds are made. Quick question! My basil starter wont root. I got my fresh basil from the herb section in Walmart. Trimmed it like the internet says, leaving only the top leaves and a long steam into the water. My apartment doesnt have too much sunlight but it gets about 2 hours of direct sunlight and 4 hours of a generally bright window and i give it another 3 hours of the brightest white light pointed straight at it. Its been sitting in a water jar for 1.5 week now and its got a single root. I just changed the water yesterday. The basil look green and fresh, the stem got some black or dark brown in it but overall it looks very healthy. But it wont root at all. Its been 12 days. My home isnt super warm all the time but its a not cold. Its 21-22C (~71F) at all times. What should i do?

You may already have figured this out, but basil does better at higher temperatures than that, and depending on the type of basil it might be dying from cold damage. The optimal temperature for basil is 70-80F, with a night-time drop in temperature to about 65F. 50F is minimum temperature for a lot of basil types, meaning it can survive shorter periods of such temperatures, but will not thrive for long.

Hey. I'm a beginner and I'm growing this in India (hot and dry). The temp. is aprox 25-30C where I live so I water the seeds and sprouts a little every alternate day. But a lot of times it has happened that the seeds germinate but then die out over the next few days. Do you have any idea why this might be? I would really love to get it right.

Over watering. No plant needs water every 2nd day.....you're drowning them.

Basil inside seems like the hardest thing in the world to grow. Every time I try to the leaves becomes discolored and the plant doesn’t grow. Eventually it starts looking so bad I just throw it out.

What type of soil are you using? What temperature is your home? How much light does the plant get? How often do you water it? If you don't know how to handle those factors properly, the plant will wither and die ir discolor. Basil needs a lot of sunlight or a quality indoor grow lamp. It also needs a good amount of moisture but not too much or you're going to cause mold to kill the plant. Watering it once per day or every two days in well draining soil should more than suffice. You basically just don't want the soil to dry out. So water it just before it does. Once you get the hang of how much water you need, then it should be smooth sailing.

What about watering? Isn’t that kinda important
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Less important than you think. 90% of people over water... And it's the one parameter that changes based on variables I have no way of predicting. Ambient air temperature, air circulation, transpiration rates, soil permeability, absorption, and evaporation rates.... All things that are different in everyone's setup.... Which is why hardly anyone suggests a watering schedule.

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, ~1. Corinthians 15:1-4 God bless you!

I thought so too. So I looked it up. Turns out, Americans pronounce it with a silent H. Brits pronounce the H (as one would pronounce the nickname for Herbert). The host of this video sounds Canadian to me, so it makes sense that he is using the British version.
