I have a couple of Walmart English lavender too. I don’t know which variety of English lavender they are and didn’t know to prune in the fall. I’m in Zone 7a. Should I prune it back now as the plant is starting to show new growth or wait until it flowers

We never had problems growing Lavender. We put it into clay soil, no fertilizing, no watering, just a little pruning... and it looks great even after we once had -18 °C in winter.

We bought a house, it had old lavender bushes, huge, totally woody base, new growth on the top, below it looks like a small tree 😂 - but the bushes are full of beautiful flowers, every year for 3 years in a row now, they are lushes, the bees love them and they look very good, just wonderful, everyone compliments them ❤. I do maintain them now, but just the top part, the woody part is like it is, there is nothing more to do, but as I said, they really look good nevertheless. We planted also 2 new bushes last year, they are still very small and we will maintain them in this way. But the old ones we will also keep, because they are in fact gorgeuos.

I've been growing my lavender in the holes of concrete blocks. I have four plants that are over 4 yrs old. I harvest the flower stems and then prune out 1/3-1/2 of the 2 yr old branches

Glad I watched this. I gave up trying to grow lavender because it always died on me. I now know why. Over watered. I like the smell of lavender so after this video I'll try one more time. Ill put it in a container and keep it separate from the other plants. Ill have to teach myself how often to water. Worth a try. Thanks Luke. What about starting seeds? Do you just let the seed tray go dry before rewatering each time?

I'm growing lavender without watering here in CA...we don't get rain between May and October. That's what it's evolved to do! It is mulched, though.

I'm in central Texas and tend to be too generous with water, so I decided to try lavender in a 10" terra cotta pot that is about 8" deep. I used a mix of potting soil, perlite, and crushed granite grit. I do water every other day in the middle of summer since it's in a smaller terracotta pot. Seems to be doing well so far. Started in March 2023 as a small 2" pot from a nursery. The foliage smells wonderful also, so I crush a leaf from time to time to get my lavender fix until it starts putting out blooms!

Great info, I had gotten a lavendar starter last year and was sad it didn't flower. But I trimmed it back in the fall and it's growing like crazy now. I think it just needed time. Thanks for the tips

This is a great video, lots of info i never realized. I've always had lavender in my flower beds, and i harvest it every year. I had a french hybrid (I think Provance?) a few years ago and it was really strange. It smelled sort of like lavender, but there was a distinct undeetone of blueberries. I had to make sure not to mix it in with the regular lavender i dried and saved.

Funnily enough, we had a lavender plant which grew old and had dead wood. I watered it, hoping to revive it, and was pleasantly surprised when it came back to life. Don't ask me why or how. I guess it just wanted to live.

I have my new Big Time Blue lavender in a pot so I can bring it in. My Angustifolia varieties did survive in zone 4, but we moved and now I’m in zone 3, plus I want to make it into a topiary, like my rosemary. They seem to have similar requirements, except the rosemary definitely can’t take the cold. Thank you for the tips!

In eastern Washington, once the plants are established, they need little to no care, but they do need supplemental water occasionally. And they will reward you with seedlings. Soooo many seedlings....

Using lavendin not lavender is a good thing too. This hybrid lavendin is hardier but I can't find it anywhere. There is a place on or very near Lake michigan that has a huge garden "wheel" of lavendin. Its amazing.

@@okami3186 Yes, I think it goes well with Earl Grey because the bergamot offsets it. It was a special blend I first tried in a tea shop, would not have thought of it myself because of the perfume association.

I water my lavender, but it's really happy next to my desert willow, and we're lucky to get 9 or 10 inches of precipitation a year. Lavender always fries next to my front walk, though.

I really like your info on this channel, Migardener very helpful! I have just started growing lavender in my garden bed here in Northern California, from seed. The weather is beginning to warm up here, as spring always comes early. This is my first time growing lavender and I am inclined in learning how to make a lot of it as I am wanting to start a business with selling and using it for soaps, oils and sachets. The pruning idea I think is excellent and would make sense why it would provide a large bounty of lavender, however how exactly do you prune the lavander? I could not exactly see or understand how you did it, Migardener. If you could explain that to me, that would be really awesome! :] I think I will also consider buying some of your gardening soils and supplies as well! :]

Crazy story.. I bought a lavender plant this year. I picked it up in its original pot which was in an empty bed. I was hoping to plant it in there. I noticed a lot of little ants. I took it out of the pot to realize there was thousands inside the dirt! They had made a home within the roots! I first did DE. Didn't kill the ants so I sprayed the plant inside and out with home defense! Well it killed the ants and the plant is alive and fine lol!

I'm in Central Texas, we have gone thru a drought the last 8-10 yrs., I have my Lavender in a pot just bc when we do get rain it's a flood! I'm guessing my fault is not fertilizing the plants, I've not received one bloom in the 4-5 yrs. I've had the plant for that long. Last Spring I did trim it back real good, and will again here soon, I have great looking leaves and stems!!! For a 14" pot, should I fertilize as you suggested but obviously less? Thank you for the great info., just need a little clarification for growing in pots.

Can I grow lavender in fabric grow bags? I've read that unlike growing in the ground and not having to worry about moisture, in grow bags it was said I need to treat it like any other plant and water about once a week or so depending on the heat and wind. I'm now in 7B with the new map. Any particular kind of soil I should use or is potting soil just fine? I assume to add more perlite but don't know. Thanks for the great information.

I had 4 beautiful lavender plants about 3 years old all were doing fabulous and right about to bloom. We had new windows and siding put on on our house and the workers stomped all over my plants even though I had blocked them off with a temporary fence. 3 are now dead one is recovering slowly, I am sooooooo pissed!! 😫

White French lavender Edelweiss is the only Lavender that has survived our cold wet winters here in Ky. It’s growing out of a concrete block. Really surprised me. It seems to like to hot dry location in the summer time.

I always struggle to understand these gardeners that don't water. They get rain 12 months out of the year. My situation is like yours. We typically go 5 months without any rain and summer heat range us 105-115 for a long extended time. I water everything twice a day.

I said, the only thing handling this drought is lavender. We have sand and it’s I full sun. I cover it with pine boughs in winter as leaves would Matt down and rot it. Z5a, WI. I believe it is Munstead . The English lavenders are not as hardy. I have watered it, but not as much as other flowers. It gets a splash, not a soaking. I use them to outline the flower bed in garden and a row of rocks. I grow from seed and they seem to love it. I use to struggle to grow it and think it’s because those were English varieties. About pruning-I’m not positive, but I don’t believe the woody stems should be pruned only soft growth and not sure if there is a certain time of year. I never had to prune and just leave them bush out.

I add gravel and course sand in the soil around and under the plant and this will prevent problems with too much rain. In Michigan we have heavy clay soil (in my part of Michigan). I dig out a big hole about a foot down and 2 feet wide. Add gravel to the bottom of the hole several inches deep. Then add a shovel full of paver sand and gravel to the soil I pulled out of the hole and mix well and replant the plant using that mixture. Water a little for a few weeks, then let it be.

I love this guide, but... After trying to keep lavender dry-ish for the last 5 years and seeing lavender after lavender die, the last two years, I have a nice lavender growing in shade w/ regular water. This is the high desert of CA. I used to grow on the other side of the mountains in the coastal plains, and yep, giant lavender bushes loved by the birds and all I did was trim it. It actually got some amount of regular water but I had them in good drainage. It took me quite a long time to recognize that the sun up here is lethal. Even my trees enjoy some shade. I have killed so many drought tolerant plants out here, I call myself a garden killer, even though my garden is actually nice and green, unlike my neighbors' weeds, rocks and sand. Once I started w/ shade, it took me a few years to realize I need to shade pretty much my entire garden if I want to see nice, mostly non-stressed plants during summer. You should see the variety of shade cloths, old t-shirts, old palm fronds, etc shading the garden. We built a few shade structures and I have a few gazebos, but I can see I will need to top the entire garden, at least in summer. I am happy to finally have a nice lavender in the mostly shady spot. It is in its 2nd year and I will be trying to grow more from seed. Now, for culinary sage, which has been constantly dying...but probably same thing for me: it just needed shade.

I do use shade cloths, but I also use dead palm fronds to partly shade chard, etc. and as long as the plant gets some protection from the full summer sun, it seems to do ok. I have shaded almost everything this year, and walking the garden, it is nice to see everything surviving the 90+, 100+ summer with only a bit of stress.

I grow it along with roswmary in pots, a cactus soil. I can't get it to grow in my southeast Texas ground soil. ❤
