This video is a detailed description of Limelight Hydrangea. Limelight is a Hydrangea Paniculata variety that is extremely cold hardy. It blooms with lime-green and white flower clusters that are persistent through the summer. Limelight is fast growing and can become a small tree in time, but is easy to keep around 6 feet in height.

I have one that my neighbor gave me duing my bout cancer and that's when my boxer died in '08. I call it my Diamond tree after my boxer. I have never trimmed it. My one is the size of your 2. The flowers on mine are enlong gated. I give some of them to my florist for arrangement. She also uses them for funerals. I have never used fertilizer on mine. It is huge. I love them as a dried arrangement.

I am so thrilled to have found your channel. I'm in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, z6, and you have videos on so many of the new shrubs I've bought this year - and your videos are so much more in depth and informative than any I've found before. I purchased four Limelights to use as a hedge in the center of a 75 foot property border and now I have a much clearer idea of how it will look and spacing requirements. I also have six Confetti hydrangeas and I was going to plant three on each end of the Limelights but I doubt it's needed now. Thank you for all your wonderful videos.

Hi Jim, first and foremost thank you for what you do. My wife and I have spent much pleasurable time watching your videos. I have a question about the Limelight Hydrangea. I have been looking for this plant for some time and found 3 recently at a local nursery. BTW, I live down the street from you just SW of the Winston Salem area Zone 7b. The plants I purchased are nearing dormancy, they have lost most of their leaves and very well branched and my question is can I plant them now? The gentleman at the nursery said go ahead and plant. Although I must say he was not very convincing. Anyway thank you for your time. I hope to hear from you soon. Don

Hi there, I'm a novice gardener. We had these installed in our garden last summer and they've flourished. That said, their blooms are so large that they droop. How can we encourage upward growth so that they start to look more like the ones in your video vs. being a huge droopy (but very flowerful) mess? If we could get them to be 6-7' high with all the blooms towards the tops of the plants that'd be awesome!

Jim, thanks for the awesome video and information. I finally have a home where I can do some planting and I really like these. My intent is to plant them to create a little bit of a barrier between my yard and neighbors. Honestly, I was hoping you might be able to weigh in on how to best purchase these to get them growing. Should I order them as a bare root plant? Get them in a quart pot? A gallon? I guess I would like to make sure they get a chance to really start growing before the heat of Arizona gets going in May/June (I am in zone 9). Really appreciate any input, if you have time. :-)

Hi, I have a question regarding these hydrangeas paniculata. It's my first year growing them, but they don't seem to sit well as cut flowers. How do you keep them alive after they have been cut? Mines just don't seem to last no more than 3 days after they have been cut. It's either I'm not using the appropriate flower food or there must be a hidden pesticides that it's eating them up. Any tips would be appreciated very much thank you! 💕

I've grown Limelight hydrangeas for 4 years in Virginia, Zone 7a. The cut flowers wilt quickly (within a day or two) early in the summer. However, if you pick the flowers in late September or October, they last for several weeks in water and they will actually dry without losing their color. You can keep them in a vase with no water (as a dried arrangement) for months.

If they sell them somewhere you could just take a chance, keep it in a pot, and then see how it goes?? maybe if it can slowly acclimate to where you are and the sun it needs then it might work. These dont have the same habits as a traditional hydrangea you can buy on mothers day at large chain stores, so it COULD work. I'd give it a try.....*shrugs*

Any tips on how to keep them upright? I recently planted 4 large limelight bushes, in hopes of them growing together as a privacy wall. They are in full sun and in the wide open, the wind has flopped them down. Should I put something around them or will they just fix themselves next yr?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 7 жыл бұрын
+Laurie Snyder I would just let them fix themselves at this point. It would be easy to break them off trying to adjust them

We purchased 6 of these that will be in the pots for a while before planting. How often should they be watered? Should we allow them to dry out between watering, or keep them moist? Another question, the fence where we're planning to plant these is a wooden 6 footer. They won't be getting any sun until around 2 pm in the afternoon during the summer months. Good idea, or should we consider another location? Thanks!

+Michael Paffenroth It is tricky while they are flowering, but I would let them get mostly dry between waterings

Should the tree be pruned at any particular point of the branch. I want to prune the limelight for winter.

Watch garden answer. You don’t prune TIL spring. Between the nodes. Cut back a third and all dead twigs. Laura on garden answer has a couple of great vids on how she does this. I know it’s late.

Hey Jim - Thanks for the great video. I have two limelight hydrangeas. One seems to be doing really well and the other is much smaller, spindly, thinning, with yellowing, dropping leaves. I'd love to send a pic and get your thoughts if you'd be agreeable. Thanks.

I'm in 7b as well and when we moved into our house just two years ago there were three planted out front. They were basically a few sticks coming out of the ground and no flowers. This year is the first year I have descent flowers on them but they are not as full as I would like. How far should I prune them and when so that they fill out better? I bought another one myself and it's doing great. But it gets a bit more sun.

Probably will continue to be thin in less than a half a days sun. You can cut hard in late winter.

Hi Jim, thanks for your video! I planted 3 Limelight last year and they went pink this year only a few weeks into blooming. I bought them for the green to white colour and didn’t expect them to change so soon. Does this indicate too much water or is there something I can do to delay them going pink? Thanks Stephanie

Super Easy to Grow ?? I love Hydrangeas . And cannot grow one ? I live in Zone 9 - 8.5 acres to work with . Bad clay soil to Great farm mulchy soil . And i cannot understand WHY They start to get a leaf or two , Then die off ? I planted them in nice well drained soil . but i may now understand i could be over watering ? And too much sun ! It can get up to 115 in the summer !

been there dude. Ive made 3 separate attempts to buy them and they all died (except for this most recent on that ive kept in a pot on my patio) it receives morning sun and then afternoon shade, but other than that i have no plans to put it in the ground because of all the other times the did it and they ALL just wilted and died. Limelights are supposed to be really great though and DONT have the same habits as traditional ones you buy on mothers day that look all pretty in their pot at the store. I would try these as a last attempt if you really want to give it a fair shake. ; )
