How to Grow Mini Lotus in Container Successfully

I bought the lotus roots from an online store called Pond Lotus. They are available to buy in early spring. You can check back in March or April and put in your order so they can ship them out in May. The wait is worth it.

Can I use top soil and sand? What nutrients do they need to fertilize? I have seeds I scratched, soaked , they are 3 days in soe. How long will it take to see flowers?

Top soil alone is okay. You can buy the lotus tabs to feed your plants. But only feed it once the leaves grow above the water. I have not successfully grown lotus from seeds, but I think it will take months or even a year to see flowers. I recommend growing from tubers.

You most certainly can grow the seeds from the seed pod. There is a lotus native to America and the seed pods are sold for arts and crats. People sometimes grow the seeds if there are any in those seed pods.

With either of the pure species, it's a easier to know what you are getting, but what she was saying was that she had had bad experiences buying seeds for specific horticulturally-bred varieties, especially of the micro lotuses. Which is true for any specialty plant, really. You have to have a seller you know you can trust, when buying seed. She said she didn't have a pond, and so was growing dwarf/bowl lotuses. Nelumbo lutea can't be grown as a bowl lotus... it will struggle even in a relatively generous-sized container. I wish more people with the space *did* grow our native lotus from seed, but nucifera is showier, I guess, so it's more popular 😔

Do you have to change the water, otherwise how do the fish and snail survive? What water do you use

No water change is necessary. I just top the water off due to evaporation. The fish love it when it rains because that's the best water. Otherwise, I just use tap water

I bought it from Home Depot years ago. It is just a plastic container. Just make sure you buy the one that does not have predrilled holes.

It is just regular top soil. You can get from Home Depot. Don't use soil that has fertilizer in there.
