Though I'd add this for anyone with questions regarding sterility: Sterility is important during the stage of creating spawn. Once at the stage where this video starts sterility is not as important. That said, he did mention pasturisation of the substrate - for straw/wood pellet substrate this is done during their manufacture process. For a species of mushroom that prefer coco coir as a growing substrate, this still needs to be done. You can do this yourself by cooking the coir once appropriately hydrated at 70-80 degrees Celsius in your oven for a couple of hours. Alternatively you can do it using the bucket technique where you add your dry substrate mix (normally coir or coir mixed with vermiculite and gypsum) to a bucket with a sealable lid and adding the correct amount of fresh off the boil water and leaving it for a number of hours until cool. I'd recommend insulating the bucket with a sleeping bag to get a better result of pasturisation. Just Google bucket tek for more information. Worth noting is that different species grow on different mediums in the wild. My understanding (basic) is that oysters enjoy growing on wood and straw. Do research on the species you intend to grow and adjust your substrate accordingly. TLDR: Sterility is important when making mushroom spawn which he has already done prior to this video. Once you have healthy spawn, you only need to worry about correctly choosing the substrate to add it to for your species and that the substrate is pasturised. Hope this is helpful to anyone reading.

This video is useful because it covers what it takes to get to the mushroom grow kit stage in terms of getting the sub-straight inoculated. I'm trying a slightly different approach by using ceramic bonsai planters (yeah because they just look really cool) and a thin layer of plastic wrap for now. Ideally I want to come up with a lid and air filter for these ceramic planters so I can reduce the amount of plastic waste, eventually only having to replace a small filter. I'm not trying to productionalize things, but instead wanting to grow mushrooms with a little more finesse than using cardboard and plastic. Watching your mushrooms grow is part of the experience, so why wouldn't you treat them as well as you treat your house plants let alone the vegetables in your garden. If I just wanted to eat mushrooms then I would just buy them, you grow your own mushroom because you want to participate in the process. You want to watch them grow and form. It's as much about the fascination and wonder as it is about the consumption or at least for the amateur grower.

I have the same thoughts about all the plastic bags, plus unfortunately though the reason I believe clear plastic bags are so commonly used is to spot contamination within the substrate and mycelium or else you’d be growing bad mushrooms for who knows how long until harvest
@alsinakiria6 ай бұрын
There are a few reasons people use the bags. Saves on labor costs. You don't have to clean them or pay someone else to fo it and you don't risk any contaminate from a previous batch. Personally I do use buckets. Specifically I use buckets that I get from local ice cream stores. They're happy to be throwing away less plastic and I get them for free. Got 20 today. They recognize me now and if they're cleaning out one they'll get me to wait so I can take it off their hands. I also use them for my potatoes.

Why is there such an emphasis on sterility in mushroom growing, when you weren't even wearing gloves or a face mask when setting up that bag. Am I correct that the need for sterility is largely when trying to grow spawn itself and not when the spawn is being used to colonize further substrate? Also, I've read that some people use only coir as the substrate when adding spawn. Since coir has no nutritional value, is that the same thing here with the straw pellets, or are straw pellets providing additional nutrients? Thank you so much for your wonderful and easy-to-understand videos! It's clear you love what you do and it really makes your videos enjoyable!

@monkee0144 жыл бұрын
coco peat is a great sub for mycelium, but often straw is cheaper and less messy to pasturize large amounts. The spent mycelium can be used to restart innoculation of a new sub, but in my opinion it is not reccomended. Older substrate cakes and mycelium that has been grown out many times are weaker and more prone to contamination, so i would recommend putting a few colonized grain samples on agar while you are doing grain to grain expansions or mixing grain with bulk substrate. This way you have a young and healthy sample with less risk of contamination. Hope this helps! Mushlove

@bubblerings3 жыл бұрын
I guess no answers, as we don't know about beer making... But, for example rye grains are soaked for 12-24 hours, well drained, then sterilized... then inoculated with mycelium. Grains have higher nitrogen and are prone to mold and contamination, so are made Sterile., not as simple as the ungloved hands and such as you see, here. -You could always try a small batch in your microwave for 10-15 minutes, adjusting the power to not boil too much... but usually grains are sterilized in a pressure cooker. (I was able to 'sterilize' half a pint of rye this way, as an experiment) Then, there are so many things done to maintain a sterile environment... Why use the bag? Could you not just grow out of the tub? (obviously converted to monotub with holes and polyfill)

Where do you get all that stuff? What is the cost? What is the yield? Can you do a second and third batch? Not very detailed...

Thanks for another informative video! Are the wood pellets hardwood - was under the impression that softwood wasn't a good idea for growing mushrooms on? Also, do you have a recommended supplier for the straw and wood pellets? Thanks :)

Dawn Smart you should find local straw or your local hardware store has hardwood fuel pellets.

And I believe Ryan said they were oat straw pellets

No particular supplier as long as they have them and will deliver to you. Hardwood is best although oysters can do fine on soft too

@@GroCycleTV - thank you... interesting about the softwood as I saw somewhere else that softwood produces a sap that mushrooms can't survive with but good to know that it's fine for oysters! :)

why use a bag rather than leave all of that in the plastic bin?
