Though I'd add this for anyone with questions regarding sterility: Sterility is important during the stage of creating spawn. Once at the stage where this video starts sterility is not as important. That said, he did mention pasturisation of the substrate - for straw/wood pellet substrate this is done during their manufacture process. For a species of mushroom that prefer coco coir as a growing substrate, this still needs to be done. You can do this yourself by cooking the coir once appropriately hydrated at 70-80 degrees Celsius in your oven for a couple of hours. Alternatively you can do it using the bucket technique where you add your dry substrate mix (normally coir or coir mixed with vermiculite and gypsum) to a bucket with a sealable lid and adding the correct amount of fresh off the boil water and leaving it for a number of hours until cool. I'd recommend insulating the bucket with a sleeping bag to get a better result of pasturisation. Just Google bucket tek for more information. Worth noting is that different species grow on different mediums in the wild. My understanding (basic) is that oysters enjoy growing on wood and straw. Do research on the species you intend to grow and adjust your substrate accordingly. TLDR: Sterility is important when making mushroom spawn which he has already done prior to this video. Once you have healthy spawn, you only need to worry about correctly choosing the substrate to add it to for your species and that the substrate is pasturised. Hope this is helpful to anyone reading.

Brilliant comment. Personally, I pour hot (boiling) water into a large tub with aspen shavings, let them soak and sit for 24 hours. The next day I squeeze them out and mix with spawn in 5 gallon buckets.

This video is useful because it covers what it takes to get to the mushroom grow kit stage in terms of getting the sub-straight inoculated. I'm trying a slightly different approach by using ceramic bonsai planters (yeah because they just look really cool) and a thin layer of plastic wrap for now. Ideally I want to come up with a lid and air filter for these ceramic planters so I can reduce the amount of plastic waste, eventually only having to replace a small filter. I'm not trying to productionalize things, but instead wanting to grow mushrooms with a little more finesse than using cardboard and plastic. Watching your mushrooms grow is part of the experience, so why wouldn't you treat them as well as you treat your house plants let alone the vegetables in your garden. If I just wanted to eat mushrooms then I would just buy them, you grow your own mushroom because you want to participate in the process. You want to watch them grow and form. It's as much about the fascination and wonder as it is about the consumption or at least for the amateur grower.

love mushrooms, love growing them, HATE the amount of single plastic bag use in the industry. like you said yourself dear Adam, there are alternatives like buckets that perform just as well but are re-usable. If visibility is a must, get a see-through plastic bucket? :) No reason to grow oysters in plastic bags, they are the least fussy about growing conditions ime.

I have the same thoughts about all the plastic bags, plus unfortunately though the reason I believe clear plastic bags are so commonly used is to spot contamination within the substrate and mycelium or else you’d be growing bad mushrooms for who knows how long until harvest
@alsinakiria

There are a few reasons people use the bags. Saves on labor costs. You don't have to clean them or pay someone else to fo it and you don't risk any contaminate from a previous batch. Personally I do use buckets. Specifically I use buckets that I get from local ice cream stores. They're happy to be throwing away less plastic and I get them for free. Got 20 today. They recognize me now and if they're cleaning out one they'll get me to wait so I can take it off their hands. I also use them for my potatoes.

I gotta thank you on this, I've been trying to use a mushroom kit, that I received as a gift, but the instructions were far too vague. For instance, the instructions went straight from creating a humidity trap, to spraying it with water daily, but recommending against spraying the water on the mushrooms directly. I inferred this to mean not to spray the mycelia, and to instead saturate the humidity trap. No wonder there was no sign of growth for over a week!

Why is there such an emphasis on sterility in mushroom growing, when you weren't even wearing gloves or a face mask when setting up that bag. Am I correct that the need for sterility is largely when trying to grow spawn itself and not when the spawn is being used to colonize further substrate? Also, I've read that some people use only coir as the substrate when adding spawn. Since coir has no nutritional value, is that the same thing here with the straw pellets, or are straw pellets providing additional nutrients? Thank you so much for your wonderful and easy-to-understand videos! It's clear you love what you do and it really makes your videos enjoyable!

Hey Adam, Great video, easy to do. I am interested in the straw pellets. They are so green, are they alfalfa pellets for animals? We currently use straw and it is so messy and hard to chop up with the weed wacker. We also use wood pellets, but we find we have to pasteurize them, or they will mold. @bubblerings
@bubblerings 3 жыл бұрын
I guess no answers, as we don't know about beer making... But, for example rye grains are soaked for 12-24 hours, well drained, then sterilized... then inoculated with mycelium. Grains have higher nitrogen and are prone to mold and contamination, so are made Sterile., not as simple as the ungloved hands and such as you see, here. -You could always try a small batch in your microwave for 10-15 minutes, adjusting the power to not boil too much... but usually grains are sterilized in a pressure cooker. (I was able to 'sterilize' half a pint of rye this way, as an experiment) Then, there are so many things done to maintain a sterile environment... (am a newbie myself, watching lots of videos) -good luck, man!

Been following your video for few days now, have a few questions: 1) can coco peat be used as substrate for growing mycelium? 2) when the o/p reduces after few harvests can the propagated mycelium grow back be used to restart incubation in a new substrate? If not why?
@monkee014
@monkee014 3 жыл бұрын
coco peat is a great sub for mycelium, but often straw is cheaper and less messy to pasturize large amounts. The spent mycelium can be used to restart innoculation of a new sub, but in my opinion it is not reccomended. Older substrate cakes and mycelium that has been grown out many times are weaker and more prone to contamination, so i would recommend putting a few colonized grain samples on agar while you are doing grain to grain expansions or mixing grain with bulk substrate. This way you have a young and healthy sample with less risk of contamination. Hope this helps! Mushlove

Is there an easy way to pasteurise them at home? I only have an oven or a normal pot. I have hydrated lime but assume that cannot be used with wood pellets? Thank you so much

The machinery used for making wooden pellets are not the cleanest, there might be traces of machinery oil that are not visible. You could try pasteurize in an oven. I've tried oven for 30minutes at 150C and its working fine for me. My friend pasteurize by microwave on high for 15minutes so thats an alternative method if you are keen.

Did you use tap water? The chlorine could have contaminated your substrate. Use distilled or spring water

once you harvest can you spray with more water and keep getting mushrooms?

Yes, it usually grows 3 flushes of shrooms. But each flush produces less mushrooms.

Once harvested, do more grow from the bag or? If so how long can you keep harvesting from the same bag and is it just 2 more weeks?
@GroCycleTV
@GroCycleTV Жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, once you've harvested, leave the bag to rest for a coupe of days, then re-soak and start again! 2-3 harvests is the norm, but we've heard of some people getting as many as 5 harvests off a single kit! Good luck - let us know how you get on!

Thanks! I will try this for sure. What I don't understand is how many holes that is suitable for each bag. Will there be a second harvest in the cross you made, or could you have made a second hole on the other side of the bag, or even several. What I would like to know is the relationship between the holes, the harvest and the size of the bag. Best wishes from Sweden! :-)

Hi Carina, glad you'll give it a go. No need to cut a 2nd hole. You can use 25% of weight of the bag as a rule of thumb :)

Ingredients: -250 gr oyster mushroom -5 cup of general use flour -2 tea spoon of salt -a little bit of black pepper (depends on your taste) -garlic powder (depends on your taste) You gotta mix all of this ingredients and stir it till it looks like a dough then add your washed mushroom (rinse mushroom thru running water then squeeze mushroom to get the water out) After rinsing just stir the dough and the mushroom together till it blends, once blend just lightly fry the mushroom with small fire until it is fully cooked And you have yourself a lightly battered fried mushroom

Yes, but with diminishing yields every time you do it. Consider taking a biopsy from a stem butt to make a liquid culture with which to innoculate many spawn jars/bags. I wrote an article on making liquid cultures that touches on it here. statelyhyattpermaculture.wordpress.com/2021/01/12/fungiculture-liquid-culture/

yes, you can do it a couple of times, but as the micelium gets older it starts to have problems, like stop fruiting, having slow inoculation, being more prone to contamination
