I have had some success with sets but switched to seedlings the past 2 years and that will be my go to from now on. Last year was a fantastic yield. My first year gardening I found out too late that I planted too deeply. I didn't realize onions like to be more shallow, so knowing that has helped with my success too. Thanks for a great video. :)

From what I understand, the onion sets are 2nd year onions and what they really want is to go to flower. That's why it's unusual to get large bulbs. Our soil is workable (finally), so I'm about ready to plant out my starts. 🤞🤞🤞

Last year was the first time I was unsuccessful growing onions. I used sets for the first time and I blamed it on that. Since watching this video I looked up the sets I bought and realized that I had purchased long day. I used to always just get plants at the local big box whose buyer would of course supply the correct type. This was a priceless tip. Thanx! I just started my short day seeds for a spring crop.

Onion sets are OK for green onions but onions are biennial and when you plant a set it’s in its second year of growth so it will go to seed before it will grow a large bulb. I grow from seed and from plants (Dixondale Farms is a good plant supplier). I think I’ve grown every short-day onion available and the best ones for my zone 10a are Yellow Granex and Red Creole. Your suggestions on fertilizing and crowding are spot on! Too much late Nitrogen will cause major bolting (I found out the hard way). I’ve found the best regimen is good old 15-15-15 in light, weekly applications until bulbing just starts then 0-50-30 as a foliar right up until harvest day. Another key is watering as if allowed to dry out plants will get stressed and bolt big time. Thanks for the informative video, very good recommendations as always. I’m going to try Neptune’s Harvest for next season’s onion crop. I prefer organic fertilizers to chemical anyway.

Great video! I live in a very long day location (almost 19 hour days in summer) and have been growing from seed for the past couple years. I start the seeds indoors in mid-February in trays and transplant outside in April -- basically as soon as I see grass beginning to grow. Growing from seed is so much more economical than from sets, and seems to produce bigger bulbs.

I found out only recently that the onions sets that you buy in most stores are the long day variety. Yet another reason why in my short/intermediate zone, the onions that I grew from sets never did very much. Same with seeds that you get at your local Big Box store - walla walla, Spanish Sweet - sound fantastic, but they are long day onions.

Good call. I don’t know why the big box stores sell long-day onion seed in the southern regions. I guess they make one huge purchase for every store across the country. I plant them in containers to use as chives and they work well for that purpose. I’m in zone 10a in Southern California.

I bought sets this year . I planted them in April or may . I’m in NC . This year I have the best looking onions I’ve ever grown . All I put to my onions was 10 10 10 around the last full week of may . And folks it’s been dry here . I hear a lot of gardeners saying they need water . Well the only water they have received is from Mother Nature. And I think that has been around or close to two inches and it’s June now . I know right before I planted my garden we had four inches and then it went to hot hot days and little to no rain for a month. Seems like when we are seeing all this rain heading our way it splits and goes around us . God is good . And I have planted all my garden this year my the moon planting and so far it has amazed me with how dry it’s been . Plus I learned a long time ago , when you water your garden the roots like to stay up top because they know they gonna be watered. So I don’t water mine except seeds .

Well…I didn’t add bone meal when I planted the onion bulbs but their green leaves are almost 2 ft tall but I noticed they are starting to lean over, not all. I just straightened them. We did just have quasi torrential rains for 2 days so maybe. I chose to use the bulbs after my attempt with bunching onion seeds. Anti-climactic to grow and it looks like grass. I've never had luck growing onions either but I'm determined to make it work this year. I did a lot of research over the winter and I think I know why you have no luck with sets Brian. Apparently onions are biennial. My understanding is that the first year from seed is when the majority of the bulb is formed with the second year focused on flowering and seeding. So, if you plant a set you're planting an onion that was interrupted in year one and is going to focus most of its energy on seed creation after it's planted (because to the onion it's now year two). You'll still get some bulbing, but not to the extent that you would during the first year. This year I tried seedlings and so far they look great. Please let me know if I'm misinformed but I thought I'd throw it out there.
@bobbun9630 Жыл бұрын
Your information about sets is generally correct, but it's probably worth mentioning that there are true perennial onions (of the same species as biennial onions--Allium cepa). Potato onions and shallots are the most familiar examples. I have been doing a bit of "gardener research" in my own garden, and at this point I suspect that most onions can be coaxed into a perennial life cycle, though it may not be worth it. I have some onions in the garden now that are starting their third year of growth after flowering last year. There was no significant gain in number of bulbs, though, so for these particular onions the effort doesn't really seem worth the trouble.

By January their more than big enough transplant into the soil. I make sure I never walk on the prepared soil and keep off it the whole growing season. I generally Fertilize once with steer manure at planting time. I will throw in some pelletier fertilizer once they re a foot or so tall. The key is even watering, lots of sun, don't let them go dry. Both are doing far more than I expected, some almost ready to harvest. One from the pot is a measured 6"+ across, the rest are just over 4 " diameter. The ones in the ground are not quite as far along, but are a healthy lot, all around 4" diameter. All got a dose of Neptune fertilizer start and straw mulch. Knowing now what you have said compared to their practice I don’t know how much it helped with gaining size. Maybe I’ll have a chance to test it this year.

Funny, I have had the opposite problem... I have tried a couple of times to grow perennial bunching onions from seed. Unfortunately, seed suppliers aren't great about identifying the species they're selling and they just assume you're going to pull them all anyway, so generally not enough information to know for sure. I think I have the issue solved at this point, but my previous attempts resulted in some nice bulbs that were delicious, but not really what I was looking for. Sets are technically second year onions, so it should be no surprise that they're much more prone to bolting early as that's what a biennial bulb-forming onion normally does in its second year.

I make seed tapes with my onion seeds and start them indoors then transplant outside. I still get mixed results. I get large bulbs and some do very little. Still working on it though.

I practice veganic gardening. Can you give veganic options for soil amendments? I love your channel and look forward to your straight forward and understandable instruction. Congrats on 500k!!!!

Hello, I have a partial shade garden (8 hours of direct sun) can I use a short day onion due to limited sun in New England (normally a long day onion zone) reason is that my long day varieties don’t grow to potential size…I believe due to the limited sun light… anyone have thoughts or suggestions? Thanks Frank

I saw a video growing peas in a rain gutter, then moved to a garden. Just before the transplant, the video had ideas for beans and peas. What do you say about that?

I’ve seen other videos talk about spooning and trimming the greens. How come you did not?

So if I have grown my garlic from seed garlic, not grocery store bought, will I be able to use it as seed once I harvest it? I want to keep some for seed and eat the rest. I also live in Southern California in the high desert area of San Diego county. Thank you for great videos.

Wow! I never knew!!!! This is the first year I’m trying onions. I bought sets and am in the Oregon so hopefully I’ll get some harvest. Does anyone know if we can let a couple of bulbs from sets go to seed and plant those for next year or should I get seeds for next year? TIA Also, I’ve tried growing garlic without a whole lot of success. Do you have a video for garlic? Thank you for this video. Much appreciated!!!

Thank you. I plant onions in zone 5. I am curious about mulch and pruning. I typically use grass clipping to mulch is that appropriate. Also do you prune your stems to help with maturation.
