I took cuttings from some peppermint my Mom had growing on the edge of her yard. I rooted it and planted it on a bank and now the bank is loaded with pepperment. It's very invasive so if you are not growing in pots boy oh boy watch where you plant it because it takes over. It's great to have it. Nice garnish in summer drinks or steep a few leaves for a hot drink. I've never tried drying it. Thanks Diane for the video. So nice to start your own from seed for those who may not have access to cuttings.

I planted some peppermint last week, just this week it is sprouting above ground but it looks like a blade of grass. No leaves just a few cm long tiny still but why no leaves yet? Is this peppermint or did something else fall into my pot and start growing or something? Been trying to find info online but cant find any pictures or information of anyone knowing about this. Would appreciate some help thanks! 😊

HI Jerry,, in the past I have purchased shop lights at our local home and garden Menards.. there definitely is a difference so don't go to cheap like I did.. they did not last.. mine were always around 3000 lumens and did fine but you could do better yet by getting lights made for growing..

Does Mentha like direct sunlight or not when growing? Thank you
@dianemummvideos Жыл бұрын
Plant mint in full sun or part shade. Depending on your climate, they can tolerate some shade during the hotter parts of the day.. Mint grows best in full sun to partial shade, should be planted early in the growing season and is generally hardy to -20° F. Mint prefers moist soil conditions, but excess water will promote root and leaf diseases.

Thanks for the video. I gave it a thumbs up. Does peppermint use a lot of water? Also, I heard that it keeps mosquitoes at bay. Is that true or is it just an old wives tale?
@dianemummvideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping by! As a pesticide, the primary active ingredient, menthol, has biocidal properties and is effective at controlling mites, mosquito larvae, and var- ious other pests. It also has repellent properties to insects, dogs, and cats. Peppermint oil is an effective antimicrobial. Peppermint plant needs a lot of water and cannot be grown commercially in non-irrigated farms with annual precipitation less than 1100 mm. Nearly all commercial peppermint farms are irrigated, especially before and during the summer months and between harvests.

The thing I do not like is that my mint tastes off. It has a bergamot twang to it. Can anyone refer me to a good source to get good peppermint seeds? Is the variation of flavor because it is a hybrid? And how long will this perennial live? Since they are not supposed to make viable seed they should expire someday right?
