Growing Mint From Seed Outdoors
Scatter peppermint seeds over the moist vermiculite, lightly cover with no more than ¼ inch of vermiculite and water again with the mist setting. Keep the bed moist by misting it a couple of times each day until the seeds germinate
How long does it take for peppermint seeds to germinate?
10 to 15 days
Do not cover the seeds; they need light to germinate. They should sprout within 10 to 15 days at room temperature or slightly warmer (68 to 75°F). Transplant into the garden or container when they have at least 2 sets of true leaves.
What month do you plant mint?
For spring planting, mint seeds can be started indoors in late winter or direct-sown in the warm spring soil. But as a hardy perennial, they can be started anytime until about 2 months before the first frost of fall, or year-round for indoor use.
Why wont my mint seeds grow?
Most seeds need some soil warmth but do not need light until they have germinated, however, that is not a rule for all seeds. ... Mint requires light to germinate. If you buried the seeds or even covered them lightly, they might not germinate. Likes soil temp approx 70°F/20-22C°.
What conditions does mint grow best in?
Where: Mint performs its best in full sun, as long as the soil is kept moist, but it also thrives in partial shade. Mint is considered an invasive plant, since it sends out “runners” and spreads vigorously
How often should I water mint seeds?
The plants in the ground need on the average watering about every 7 - 10 days. The plants in the pots about every 3 -5 days depending on the temp, humidity and wind. There is no rule or law as to when a plant needs to be watered
Does Mint come back every year?
Lift and replant your mint every 3 to 4 years to keep your patch's flavor and scent strong. Mint is frost tolerant. It usually dies back in the winter but comes back in spring.
Does Mint keep bugs away?
Repels mosquitoes. Mint is best grown in pots rather than the ground because it spreads aggressively. Once established in the garden, it can be difficult to remove. ... Containers of mint strategically placed in the garden or on the patio will help keep nearby plants insect free.
What does mint plant attract?
Let your mint go to flower and it will attract bees, beneficial wasps, hoverflies (aphid eaters), and tachinid flies (parasitic on nasty bugs). The smell of the mint plant will also repel houseflies, cabbage moths, ants, aphids, squash bugs, fleas, mosquitoes, and even mice
Why is my mint spindly?
Lack of sunlight results in leggy growth as the plant sends out long, weak stems in search of adequate lighting, while sufficient sun helps mint produce full, compact growth.
Does mint like sun or shade?
Where: Mint performs its best in full sun, as long as the soil is kept moist, but it also thrives in partial shade. Mint is considered an invasive plant, since it sends out “runners” and spreads vigorously.
Can you air dry mint?
There are two main ways to air-dry peppermint. You can tie bunches of it with string and hang upside down in a warmish, dry, dim, and airy place. ... I lightly spread the peppermint on, stems and all, and leave it there to dry. It usually takes a week for it to dry if the room is warm enough
How do you harvest peppermint?
Harvest mint leaves at any size by pinching off stems. For a large harvest, wait until just before the plant blooms, when the flavor is most intense, then cut the whole plant to just above the first or second set of leaves
Peppermint is a popular traditional remedy for a number of conditions. It is believed to have calming effects. It is used to treat flatulence, menstrual pains, diarrhea, nausea, depression-related anxiety, muscle and nerve pain, the common cold, indigestion, and IBS

I took cuttings from some peppermint my Mom had growing on the edge of her yard. I rooted it and planted it on a bank and now the bank is loaded with pepperment. It's very invasive so if you are not growing in pots boy oh boy watch where you plant it because it takes over. It's great to have it. Nice garnish in summer drinks or steep a few leaves for a hot drink. I've never tried drying it. Thanks Diane for the video. So nice to start your own from seed for those who may not have access to cuttings.

@dianemummvideos
@dianemummvideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping by! As a pesticide, the primary active ingredient, menthol, has biocidal properties and is effective at controlling mites, mosquito larvae, and var- ious other pests. It also has repellent properties to insects, dogs, and cats. Peppermint oil is an effective antimicrobial. Peppermint plant needs a lot of water and cannot be grown commercially in non-irrigated farms with annual precipitation less than 1100 mm. Nearly all commercial peppermint farms are irrigated, especially before and during the summer months and between harvests.

Plant mint in full sun or part shade. Depending on your climate, they can tolerate some shade during the hotter parts of the day.. Mint grows best in full sun to partial shade, should be planted early in the growing season and is generally hardy to -20° F. Mint prefers moist soil conditions, but excess water will promote root and leaf diseases.
