My mother grew tomatoes. She used one scoop of Miracle Gro per gallon of water. She put one gallon on each Tomato plant. She didn''t water every day, but MG was in the water when she did water. Her tomatoes grew large and were amazingly flavorful. When I followed the book methods, my tomatoes never looked or tasted like the ones she grew. Now you are repeating what my mother did, and that this is an effective method. I witnessed it with her Tomato's.

@@PepperGuru I don't know if you have a video on this topic, I'll search your channel to see. Q, Cross pollination of peppers: Is there a concern when growing sweet and hot or super hot that will alter the heat of the peppers? Example: I grew Bell Peppers on one side of the yard and Jalapenos on the other side. The Bell Peppers had Jalapeno heat. I attribute this to pollinators. If you don''t already, could you make a video explaining the do's and don'ts of cross pollination with regard to peppers.

One thig you are wrong about: Rain contains very little nutrients, think about it, it's distlles water. It has very low mineral contents. The nutrients get made available in the root yone from fungi and other soil organizms. Thats why a living soil medium is so important. But you could also use an inert medium like coir and sythetics if you wanted. My results were actually better with coir and sythetics, but I do prefer the organic route.

Good info! We used to dig a trench with the tractor and drop in a foot of cow manure, then bury and let it compost. Potatoes liked that, as well. Chiltepin and chimayo last from year to year here (9-A, south Arizona). If they get burned down by a frost, they come back from the roots. Summer, forget fruit. 100F+ for days on end. Winds in the canyon can reach 40+ MPH (Hit 53 last summer) with 4% humidity. Add dust to that, and all those wildfires Cali 'contains' and the smoke clogs pores. Sweet peppers are great, if you can keep rabbits and quail from eating them (got to use cages on about everything). Planted in 25 gallon tubs, they do very well. Stuff a tub with hay, add soil, water, more hay and soil. Great planting material. In spring, 1/3 of the soil is removed from a tub and replace with compost. Chimayo, BTW, is considered the best chili for ristas. Great taste, good heat, and look good, too. Huge price, tho. But, they love cool weather. In a tub, sheltered with plenty of winter sun they make chilis all the time.

Cannabis growers used to think “ the bigger the smart pot, the bigger the plant”. The biggest pot you can possibly have is Mother Earth. Growing right in the ground is almost always best. Then it’s all about Improving that native soil year after year.

I would say that that is true for most, but not all. Growing in Florida is a challenge, no soil, just sand. I could amend it year after year, but the rain just flushes everything through. Fungal and pest pressure is enormous in the ground here. High tunnels and grow bags or pots are the order here.

@@stevescuba1978 Same thing here in Georgia. Where we are the soil is red sand. Love my cloth bags.
@dsulli7383
@dsulli7383 Ай бұрын
I have had grow spots that are pure sand. The key is to add a huge amount of mushroom compost. Potting soil will never compete with native soil. You just have to know how to amend your soil properly. Also growing in pots or grow bags you have to water 2-3 times more than in the ground which leaches away nitrogen very fast. Pest problems like root aphids rarely even exist in the ground but are almost always a problem in pots. Beneficial insects and predatory bugs cannot survive very well or reproduce in high numbers in pots either. You are just fighting against nature.
@dsulli7383
@dsulli7383 Ай бұрын
Sand is fine. You just have to amend with a lot of good compost and other amendments like alfalfa meal, blood meal, bone meal and get bacterial and fungal life thriving with leaf mold or old hay. The only thing you can not grow in is solid bed rock, for obvious reasons. Even very rocky and gravely soil can grow plants just fine.

While I agree with most things mentioned in this video I disagree about the fertilizer part. I think that in the growing stage the plant would benefit from a 3-1-2 fertilizer, but when it's fruiting you are better off with a Higher K value fertilizer with added calcium to prevent noserot. I swear by my 3-1-5 + Ca tomato fertilizer for my chili plants. I'm just saying this works for me, But I don't fertilize every watering, I use slow release chicken manure based pallet fertilizer and I at about a fistfull when planting and another fistfull after 3 months. This is what works for me.
@PepperGuru

I used to believe that too! I get it! To a point, you’re not wrong! This is why I mention possibly uping those values into the 1-1-1 range. However, the past 30 years of experimenting have proven to me that we don’t need to go above that. Also, we must remember that not all NPK values are accurate or created equal. We are relying on the brand to provide accurate values that truly represent what’s in the product. Thanks for your input on this topic!

Howdy neighbor! Great video idea! I'm on it! For now, like I mentioned in the video, if you implement too much shade you will suffer a hit on overall production and internodal density will take a hit too. (leggy, tall, non bushy, less biomass) If you're ok with a little less fruit, a litte more shade is fine. Just don't expect a lot of fruit out of a pepper plant say, on the north side of a home, planted under a patio, or with a large tree shading from above. You may not get much then. A smaller, dwarf variety may do well in those locations though.

Thanks for this info, trying some of these things out in SoCal this year. Last year I had issues with any of my pots that had compost in them. It was a mix of compost, perlite, peat, and coco coir. The compost ended up forming a tight mud ball around the roots even though it was evenly distributed through the mix+ combined with perlite, and it ended up drowning the plants essentially since the roots didn't get enough air flow. With knowing that, I am hesitant to use only compost, but willing to give it a shot. Hopefully grow bags will air it out enough vs. nursery pots.

I see people online bragging about how long the roots are and how nice they look but the peppers ive had the biggest harvests from have short stalky compact roots, in retrospect i think the plant is worrying to much about the root and finding nutrients thru all the medium, where as if theres no medium theres direct nutrients the plant can worry about growing not rooting or searching for food.

One thing about soil I would like to add: it's not so much about drainage, although that is important, but it's about root zone aeration. Peppers are just like most other plants in that regard. A big amount of oxygen in the root zone will give you a very healthy living root environment, which will give you big, healthy and most of all resilient plants. Peppers are just like cannabis really. I have a green thumb. I get nearly 100% germination even with varieties that are regarded s difficult.

The main differences between Capsicum and Cannabis are Capsicum isn’t photoperiodic and therefore doesn’t have “stages” of flowering vs fruiting, and therefore requires a LOT more nutrient.
