@@angelashaw9765 Only use raw honey. I put mine in a mason jar with a Mason Tops fermenting lid on it. You need to shake or turn over the honey in the jar twice a day to keep the garlic cover in the honey. If you don't have a Mason Top you can use a regular lid but you'll have to burp it daily.

I thought that my garlic hadn’t turned out right. I planted late October and harvested them last month. I ignored them becuz I was so disappointed. Last night I was gonna dry them and make garlic powder or garlic salt. They were so fragrant that I decided to bite one and OMG!!! The best, pungent, and spicy garlic ever. I regret not planting more.

Yes Sir, I was a teenager in the '60's at Grandpa's and he didn't wash off the roots of garlic, peanuts, taters, turnips,etc. He laid them all on hay, and taters got sprinkled with lime, and peanuts with the green tops were sprinkled with salt.

Printrbear, you prompted me to say how I dry my garlic. In the back of my firewood storage building, (no sun and plenty of air flow). I have a few pipes ran from wall to wall, about 7' high. I slip knot both ends of a string, open the "circle" large enough to pull the greens of the garlic through. I do the same on the other end of the string. Arrange the heads so that they have space between them. Pull the slip knot tight, then throw one of the bundles over the pipe and adjust both bundles so there is distance and air flow between the heads. I started doing it this way knowing that at the end of the season, a plants aerial parts "juices" are "drained" into the roots to preserve the plant. With that thinking, anything possibly left in the green stems should "drain" into the heads of the garlic. I can't prove any difference but it makes sense to me and curing garlic this way has worked like a charm for 8 years now.

I harvested my garlic last month. Never grown it before but super easy and bug and deer resistant. I bought the Jadam Organic Farming book by Youngsang Cho. Best garden book I've ever read. I break all the input solutions formulas down to make 1 gallon to put in my pump sprayer. I know some people say they don't know how to do the calculations from liters, etc, to gallons, ounces, etc, and to small quantities. It's not that hard - simple math. Just ask the Google. I've been observing all the plants in my area that bugs, critters, and deer won't touch. Hands down, here it's ferns, and they're plentiful, so I made JHS with ferns and hot peppers. This evening, I mixed a gallon of JNP. I tried it on an army worm that unwittingly wandered into my path. Or was it I wandered into its path? Who knows and who cares. It was too close to my cabbages. Yes I have cabbages in GA in July. Almost instant death. I sprayed a small portion of my garden and will observe for a couple days to make sure I didn't harm the plants. I almost can't wait for the tomato horn worms to show up. Thanks, my friend, for turning me on to all this. Knowledge is always there waiting for me to stumble upon. I only have to go out and stumble more.

Also I’m the one who commented on monster seed..... I did much research on this and have found that if you plant from the same family of seed, cucumbers, melons, etc...... you can NOT save and replant the seed! That’s Monster! You must NOT SAVE their seed. That’s where you get the cross breed seed. Love your channel Nate and blessings to your sharing information.

Ive grown garlic for 6 years straight and it never occurred to me that I should use manure as a top dressing. Makes complete sense and thank you for waking me up. Would it be an issue to use fresh manure? Also, can I use home made compost instead of the straw? If yes, how thick should I lay it?Thank you for all your wonderful content. You have totally changed my way of life.

fresh manure in the fall when planting is great!!... that horse manure I used was fresh from the horses in the last week or two!... if using compost on top of the manure make it so about 4 inches of total organic material is on top... maybe up to 6 inches... but straw works so fantastic for this application I suggest sourcing some

Hi Nate, it is your northern friend here up in Saskatchewan, central Canada's bread basket. Thought I'd check out your garlic tips. I've been growing about ten years, starting with about eight heads of garlic my uncle gave me, grown out on the western coast. I built it up, with addition of other varieties from the sellers, to a crop of about 2400 heads which I sell into local market. About a third of the crop goes to replanting. I found in the literature that the very largest cloves are not necessarily the best, but just large ones. We definitely don't want to plant any little stuff. I keep good records, so maybe I'll test that out and use only the very largest, this year. As I watched I was impressed that I do pretty much everything the same way you do. For curing, I just use my greenhouse, a 20x50 commercial style unit. The shade cloth goes over the entire structure, the fans set to run at about 70-75 degrees. After two or three weeks, I put them up in plastic milk crates and store in my dry, dark, insulated garage which I keep at about 50 degrees during our deep-freeze winters. They keep great! I will be pulling my crop in two weeks and I am still eating from last year's stock. So, when I harvest the bulbs, I do trim off about half the stalk/leaves, gently removing the dirt in the roots, but no further tampering. I used to hang them when I began, but now I just lay them out one layer deep, shingle style, on large screen mesh tables and other tables get sheets of cardboard laid on them. You are absolutely correct about leaving them dirty and taking no layers off. Pretty doesn't matter. Storing a long time does. My last step is simply to trim off the stalk, leaving the stem about 3 inches, just like you do, and the beard, leaving about a half inch of root whiskers. Funny, I have never seen anyone besides me, leave three inch stems! I use horse manure in the soil, here, working in about 6 inches on the gardens every third year. I have so much room, here that I can rotate every crop easily, even my large ones, like potatoes and garlic and onions, as well as give ample spacing, so amending every year not necessary at all. My main cropper gardens are situated beneath a gentle slope which is a horse pasture, so the runoff from that is manure tea! Everything is "super-size-me" out of those gardens! My Flat Dutch cabbages will approach twenty pounds, sometimes. Anyway, I have not thought about adding nitrogen. I don't have a long enough season to put bush beans in at mid-August and too busy to implement that anyway. Most years the nights reach freezing temps about mid-September. But I am going to try putting a sprinkle of nitrogen fertilizer on the beds in the fall, before laying the straw down. Now, I'm stoked to see what that does! One difference is that I plant the garlics deeper than you, pushing them in about 3 inches. They can get set pretty firmly in the ground so I have a special skinny shovel to break the soil around them at harvesttime. Also, I have not previously done any feeding. I will try adding nitrogen into the situation as you suggest. Always looking for ways to up my game and you are a good resource for that. Thanks for your dedication and heart for sharing! This is a noble work!

I believe you are speaking of the Purple Echinacea aka Coneflower... they're perennial and very hardy plus make a fantastic immune boosting tea and tincture

Love that Garlic Nate! I'm almost ready to harvest mine. BUT I have had a problem for the last few years. When the scapes first appear a worm infests them, eating its way downward to the stock. The worms don't get into the bulbs but I know they shouldn't be there. What to do?? I wish I could train the little crawlers to attack my invasive Horsetail LOL

I have just gotten all the scapes cut off. I think mine still have a cpl weeks. I have to check them for ripeness. They may be ready.

You didn’t mention the watering....do they love water? Or do you only rely on rain? Mine are under 3” mulch. Love your videos and thank you Nate

You mentioned these are hardneck, is there any reason to avoid soft? Love the full year guide, that takes effort and forethought.

I just prefer hard neck because I feel they store longer and I LOVE to eat the scapes during the summer!!

We still have some soft necks from last year. Read the opposite soft keeps longer than hard. Honestly it could be that it’s just easier! I braid 12 and hang them up where it can dry. Love the hard-necks for scapes! Such a nice flavor. Somehow the hard necks I thought I planted turned out to be soft necks tho! No scapes. Was very sad! Ended up with a bit over 100. Will have to find some good hard necks to plant in addition to the soft necks I grew this year. You happen to sell any bulbs? 😁

First time I have heard the suggestion of waiting for an erect scape to determine harvest time vs. the common suggestion of “bottom two/three leaves are yellowing - time to harvest!”. Any particular reason why this helps to indicate peak harvest time has come? I will definitely be trying this method next year! Thanks!
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking Жыл бұрын
because depending on the variety and the year and the amount of nutrients the plant receives it may never really yellow back... I've had bulbs almost start to rot in the ground while waiting for the plant to yellow... the scape is a fail safe method

I use leaf mold. I get a lot of leaves and I pile 'em up and let 'em decompose. I've never let my scapes develop, I cut 'em off and eat 'em. You leave 'em on? Have you cut them to see if there's a difference?

I am going to be harvesting my garlic this weekend. I didn't follow your planting technique, so fingers crossed for a good harvest. On an unrelated matter, I am having trouble converting your formulas from your barrel quantities for my modest garden. I use a hose end sprayer and a 2 gallon sprayer. Can you convert your measurements to those applications?

Thanks Nate, I'll be lucky if I could fill a small coat hanger with this years produce, it went to sh1t with the massive drought we had, maybe next year, I've got something that tastes of garlic its actually nice, I doubt I'll be feasting on it for Christmas.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I put out extra bucket to collect rain this year. Last year our rain barrow ran out of water. Food stores give away food safe buckets with lids.

What type of Fertlizer you use for garlic. I listed from start to end but didn’t hear what type and when you Fertlize it
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 11 ай бұрын
The main fertility is added at the time of planting in the form of the manures as you saw in the video… With a solid 2 to 3 inch layer of quality fertility like horse chicken or cow manure there is no need for additional fertilizer… This season I applied only aerated compost tea Which there is not much nutrients in that just microbiology
