How To Grow Pomegranates From Seed

Hi, I've been growing Pomegranates for over 10 years and thought I might save you some time by sharing my experience with you. I started with some kick-ass tasting poms form the store. I threw some seeds from them on the ground and marked them with a circle of rocks. Many germinated and kept growing so I transfered 6 into 1 gal pots and then potted them up to 5 gal pots and then into the ground. After 3 to 5 years they all fruited and not a one of them tasted any good although they looked good. I talked to an old time gardening friend about my experience and He advised me that only 1 out of 500 pom seeds yield good fruit. I had already pulled out all but one tree so I just topped it off at about 2 foot and did a double wedge graft from some wonderful cutting I obtained. The result was great tasting fruit after two years. Keep up the good work,Rich

Oh no, that is really depressing as I just started some seeds from a delicious pomegranate I bought at the farmer's market. I guess I should just toss them at the trash. I'm really confused though because there are guides on growing pomegranates from seed all over the internet. Are these people just recycling info without having ever tried it for themselves? Not a single warning in any of these guides that the pomegranates you grow from seed won't taste good!

The taste of the first fruit sets is usually not good if you waited another year you would have been in pomegranate heaven.

You're such an inspiration! I had these two amazing dwarf pomegranates plants that I grew from twigs, and after two years, they looked amazing. I threw out my back one year and couldn't bring them in from my balcony (I live in NYC) and they died along with my dwarf lime and lemon plants. You've inspired me to try my "garden in the sky" (21st floor) again. I do hope there is a follow-up to this video. Would love to see their progress. 😃

Thanks so much for putting this on video. Hope to see the progress. Pomegranates are my most favorite fruit in the whole world. You understand gardening on an intuitive level, for example knowing the sprouts couldn't take direct sun because they were just exposed to so much humidity. That's where my sprouts would've gone tits up I guarantee you. :-)

I´m eating right now the most gorgeous pomegranate (1kg in weight) and was curious to see if you had a video about it. Of course you do... I think I'm going to keep some seeds and plant them, even if my climate is rather cold for it, maybe indoors... love the colour of the flowers, and obviously the fruit, again one of my favourites since kid. I also have a specific heavy duty juicer for pomegranates and we're in season!

It's good to grow new trees from seed, rather than clones from cuttings, as you may come up with unique new flavours and things. Nowadays, for example, there are new pomegranate cultivars. One has purple skin, and one is golden yellow. I've managed to grow pomegranates from cuttings, so that's an easy and fun way to clone from a variety you want to keep multliplying. Dwarf pomegranate fruits sold as ornamentals still have quite tasty seed arils, too. The "Legrelliae" variety is purely ornamental, and infertile. It has pretty double flowers, but they will always fall off--and *never* set fruit. :/

I have successfully grown three seedlings in the last 3 months. All I have been doing is watering them every day from when I planted the seeds. I transferred the largest one into a very large pot recently with soil and potting mix. I water them once a day every late afternoon when the sun isn't so hot. They are doing very well. They like well draining soil and full sun. Just don't let them dry out while they are young.

Hey you can get them started on one pot but I would recommend transplanting then into individual pots before they get too large :)

How similar will the taste be of the seed grown pomegranates? Is it like apples where it will be completely different or more like peaches where the fruit will be fairly similar to its parent? I'm quite surprised at the growth rate, considering the tiny seed size. I'm already 3 months into growing my own pomegranates :)

Based on when you commented I'm right about the same timeframe with my seedlings, you probably already have your answer from somewhere but from what I have heard and seen its going to be more like apples and you wont really know until they fruit and you get to try one. Even then idk if I would give up if the first year of fruit isn't good, but I have 5 seedlings so ill find out in a couple years

Hey I’m hoping I can get some help, I have 5 pomegranate trees I’ve started from seed (thanks to this video). I absolutely love these things. I repotted them a week or so ago and I’m on about day 80. The trees are slowing down a lot. I’m giving them plenty of light, natural fertilizers, and water when it needs it. I was wondering if any of you guys could offer any suggestions?

I don't suppose you know what would be making the leaves of a pomegranate curl lengthwise, then turn yellow and drop? I have a small tree growing in a pot. Not sure if it has some disease (even though the same thing happens every year), or if it has to do with the water, or the heat of the soil... Wish I could figure it out.

Okay so here in Barbados our pomegranates ofc are acidic sweet, and don't turn this deep red. The deepest is more vibrant red, others pink. The fruit itself is always a bright/dark pink. ANYWAY what I rly want to say is, in dec my supermarket had imported some of these dark red, sweet pomegranates; I finally got to try it and loved them so much! So planted some seeds and managed to germinate them! I'm really hoping they grow and bear these fruit! I'm afraid they won't, ugh that instead they'll turn into the acidic ones 😣. Do you post on instagram as well?

Everytime i try the papertowel method it just molds after 1-2 days. Is my paper maybe too wet? Should i clean the surface of the seeds before i put them onto the towel?

HI, I used potting soil in a small pot. I poured hot water over the soil, saturate. Let cool. Put 10 seeds with the red flesh (not cleaned) 1 inch into the soil. Put pot in sunny window. 4 weeks later I have 6, 1 inch plants. Happy gardening.

The best way to cut them is to cut the very top off, find the white lines inside and then cut down those to make sections you pull apart once all the lines have been cut.
