I live in Warwickshire UK. I just bung them out in Autumn. I don't have a problem with squirrels, etc, as I'm near the town centre .My lowest temperature was minus 5 last year. No damage at all, and they all bloomed well. I left them in, and they have all come back this year. we've been about minus 3, and they look great. I would never soak them as we have too much rain in Warwickshire for that. I just do what my Grandad taught me 40yrs ago . I find the old ways are the best ways.

That's really good to know Jayne. I really do hope that the ones I found I'd left in my bed survive and the squirrels don't find them. They ate every single one of my crop in my first year growing them so I just can't risk it anymore. The old ways are the best though. That's why I've stopped pre-sprouting them now. I just plant them and let them get on with growing. 🌸

I have a few Ranunculus and Anemones in the ground permanently and they come back every year ! Zone 7b. It gets -10C in the winter and they look fine. I don't care for the colors to be honest - that's why I left them after the first year and I'm so far surprised to see them back every January/February ! :)))

Yes, they can be left in the ground - I definitely left some of mine by mistake. The reason I lift mine is because we have such heavy clay soil and they will rot during a very wet winter and I just don't want to risk losing them. Also, I do find that the squirrels dig them up and have a feast!

Oh Annette, how weird. I have just been trawling through You tube finding info about growing Ranunculus. I have bought some Ranunculus a couple of weeks ago and wasn't sure when to start them off. Than k you for a brilliant, informative video. Theer doesn't seem to be that many suppliers of unusual Ranunculus corms in the UK, sadly. Love the one called marshmallow- so pretty! Mice are getting in my greenhouse, somehow. I lost a whole tray of winter lettuce to hungry little mouse. we put down a new humane mouse trap. Caught one and released across the paddock. Then we caught another one and he wrecked the trap. Chewed all the door mechanism, so it is no good any more. Too expensive to buy more traps at £7 a time for just 2 captures, lol! Happy gardening 😃

Peppermint oil deters mice. They make sprays you can spray the parameters of the building.

@@martystevens2313 thank you Annette. I am happy and eager to try anything. At the moment I have resorted to putting peanuts and seed in a dish as they then leave my plants alone , thank goodness. Not ideal I know, as I am probably boosting the local mouse population, ha ha

Thanks Be. Glad it was useful. I bought these corms from Zoe Woodward. She has a really beautiful range but sadly sells out completely every year so you have to get in there quickly!. Sorry to hear about the mice. Nightmare.

@@cottoverdiAww, thnk you Annette.I have solved the mouse.mice problem- dn't laugh, but I am putting down a little dish of peanuts and seed every night On the greenhouse floor and it/they are leaving my plants alone. I have planted my Ranunculus and anemone corms in 7cm pots and my 2 year old corms in 9cm pots as you showed. They are in an outbuilding which is well insulated and rarely drops below 5 degrees C. I am really looking forward to seeing them in flower, and together with the lisianthus which you gave excellent instructions for, Have you ever dried flowers? I dried some lawn daisies last year to encase in resin. They worked fairly ok but am hoping you might be able to give me some suggestions of what to grow for using on cards, hanging ornaments etc. Happy gardening

Hi there, Ranunculus will start to grow, I think no matter what the temperature BUT, they will stop flowering or not flower at all if the temperature gets too hot (24°C or more) so you may not have any luck this year. If it's not too late, I would just store the corms somewhere cool and dark until autumn and then plant them for spring flowers. Good luck. 😊

I am so happy to have found your posts. This is my first year planting ranunculus corms. When you first plant after soaking do you keep them in total fat?

Thank you. I'm not sure what you mean by 'fat' do you mean darkness? I keep mine in my grow room. It's fairly warm to be honest - about 15°C and the lights are on for 16 hours a day. I honestly don't think it makes a difference if they are on or off - it's just more work if they're in darkness because you have to move them as soon as you see sprouts so that they don't become leggy. So, now I just make my life easier. I don't pre-sprout them (as per this vlog) and I keep them under the grow lights so that they get light immediately when they sprout. This way they aren't leggy and they're green immediately. As soon as they've grown about an inch (no more), I move them outside to my cold frames, where they're protected from the frosts, get daylight hours, and can grow on in the cold, which is what they prefer. Hope this helps.

I tried them last year but only got a few blooms. I think it got too warm in june when they started to bud. Any tips for minimum temps they will tolorate uncovered as i dont have row covers and want them as a bedding plant in my garden. I had no problem presprouting in my basement and then grew them on under lights in my basement, but i planted out in april and i think it may have been too late. I also only get about 6-7 hours of direct sun in any given area of my gardens due to the condo buildings and trees.

Hi Marty, yes, they really shut down when it gets too warm and stop blooming. Someone on the comments here says that they've survived -3°C but the RHS page says only down to 0°C. I do think it depends which type on ranunculus you have, though. I grow the Italian cut flower varieties only and they really are not frost tolerant. They should be blooming quite well in April and May so perhaps your garden just doesn't get sufficient sunlight. You could try different species to see whether you have better luck. Hi there, I've ordered from so many places over the years. Zoe Woodward has great corms, but pricy. I've ordered from Farmer Gracy and this year I'm trying to order from Plants of Distinction but I'm having some problems with their website so wouldn't;t recommend them..yet.
