THANK YOU! I am so grateful I finally know what this plant is lol. My husband and I bought a house about 4 years ago and it was here when we moved in. Didn't know what it was but it was odd and pretty so I just left it amd took care of it. This is amazing to find out you can use it as a shampoo. I am definitely going to try it! ❤ Thank you for sharing.

Your site caught my eye I planted ginger, maybe three months ago ,store bought ginger I’ve done it several times one batch is growing like crazy and another batch I put in another container. I just noticed three days ago has got one of these shampoo green-small things coming up out of the soil and they all come off the same batch of ginger that I got from the grocery store, it won’t have time to turn red because we’re starting to get into the cold areas but I’m gonna watch it and see what happens. I was waiting for regular ginger although it looks like some of the green foliage in the bottom it’s growing ginger and these are just coming up on the side

I've had a gifted rhizome in a pot for a couple of years on the gulf coast - gets some early morning sun but is shaded, rhizomes have spread, nice dense 3+ foot foliage - but no blooms? Is there a way to encourage bloom or am I just impatient?

Hmm, that sounds to me like the plants might need some phosphorus rich fertilizer. In that case, some bone meal should do the trick. Bone meal is a great go to fertilizer for any ornamental, flowering plants. Ive potted up rhizomes from my own yard and had them flower in less than a year. So the fertilizer should be the solution.

I have very healthy 1year old plants but they aren't flowering. How long they take to flower?

I have had my shampoo plants in my planter box on my balcony. 3 years and still no blooms. The stalks grow HUGE though and i have so many... It's just not blooming the cones. I'm super upset. Is there anything i can do to promote cones? I usually use the all in one miracle grow fertilizer every so often but that doesn't work with this plant. I would just so happy to have my plant give me cones this year ❤

I know it's aggravating when plants don't want to do what you want them to do. Start making little changes, I tend not to use Miracle grow, that's just my own personal choice. The nitrogen is for growth and leaves. The phosphorus is for good roots, strong plant stalks and blooms. The potassium is kind of an antibiotic for the plant to keep it healthier. You may want to try a different fertilizer either with the same mix that your Miracle Grow is, or drop a little bit of the nitrogen. If you have a whole lot of one thing on your plant and a deficiency in the others that helps you to dial in where your numbers may be off a touch. I've also heard that was some plants if you give it too much nitrogen it doesn't allow the plant to synergize the nitrogen the phosphorus and the potassium properly. So the plant has a hard time taking the fertilizer in. Hope it helps, hope your plan blooms for you.

I would try adding plant food. I usually rinse my vitamix with water and dump into the plants

That sounds to me like the plants might need some additional phosphorus rich fertilizer. In that case, some bone meal should do the trick. Bone meal is a great go to fertilizer for any ornamental, flowering plants.Ive potted up rhizomes from my own yard and had them flower in less than a year. So the fertilizer should be the solution. The plants may be getting a lot of nitrogen from the miracle grow, which is why you have lots of great foliage but no flowers. So adding some extra phosphorus will help balance the ratio. Another possibility if you live pretty far north is to give the plants some extra sun. Though they like shade in the deep south. They may need some direct sunshine in northern climates so they can flower properly.
