How to Grow Spirulina outdoors at home. The information in this video can be scaled up to a micro-farm small business scale.
Spirulina has incredible potential as a food source. It's time we begin growing this food at home and starting small businesses that provide Spirulina locally at farmers' markets and restaurants.
Welcome to the Future of Farming, it's nice here, stay a while!
William is the author of the 'Practical Phycology' ebook
Phycology is the scientific study of Algae and Seaweed. 'Practical Phycology' addresses the functional application of algae in Human Systems. Algae biofuels hold the spotlight at this time, yet many are finding it to be a dead-end economically. There are myriad uses for algae from food and medicine to wastewater management. 'Practical Phycology' is designed as an introduction to the field of algae, and a tool for those looking to begin cultivating algae at home, in schools, or on a farm.

To anyone considering this, that "Hand pump" he got from a homebrew supply store is meant as a gravity siphon. You don't have to hand pump constantly if your origin vessel is at a higher elevation than the destination vessel. Pump it once, get the siphon going and you can pretty much walk away.

Yes, knowing this really helps with water changes in large aquariums.

Yes, and you could even attach a pre-filter to the base of the siphon with a rubber band.

@@ramonanettles2329Using another (finer) filter at the pick up, that would probably cause a clog. since the filter/screen/mesh is after pickup and there isnt supposed to be any other deposits then it most likely wouldnt help.

This was great. Keep up the great work. Anything that helps the world stop thinking that they need to buy processed foods and/or overly expensive natural and organic foods that we can just make ourselves is a HUGE gift. It's just so fascinating to me that some of the most potent superfoods are some of the easiest to grow and produce ourselves, EG, spiro, chlorella, fermented foods and drinks, etc... "downsizing," "minimal living" and basically just being happy with what I call "radical basics" is truly a joy, and more and more people are realizing this! What joy!

i dont know why it took so long to click in my brain how cool all this is. The possibilities of algae cultivation are spinning in my head right now when I think about how they could be combined with urban development and genetic engineering. Then you mentioned the use of biogas effluent as nutrient source. I've already been advocating biogas digestors and fantasizing about investing in my own, but to now understand yet another way where this technology can synergize with other sustainable systems literally left me breathless. im not being hyperbolic here, I genuinely stopped breathing for a minute because of how exciting it all is.

Hi, marine bio student and algae activist;) thank you for posting this video! It’s inspiring to know there are others out there are dedicated to spreading the word about algae. I’d love to bounce ideas off you ! Algae just sucked me in so I’m in the early stages of creating my own startup of sustainable algae products and hopefully setting up a channel to blog it all!

Great work and presentation thereof! You've definitely encouraged me to delve into this further! I haven't seen your other work, but I am curious whether you've tried diverting your RO brine (reject) into your spirulina tanks? I wonder if the dissolved ions would be beneficial to the algae.
