Hi Adam, I enjoyed your guide to growing sweet peas. I agree with soaking the seed in a jar of water, it does seem to aid germination. As a garden boy, many years ago, I well remember digging out the sweet pea pits and preparing the soil with plenty of manure. I was taught that the main shoot of the sweet pea was liable to go "blind" after reaching about 3 feet. This was one reason to pinch out the growing point after it had developed three pairs of leaves.

Sweet peas are one of my favourite summer blooms. I do put the seeds in warm water overnight, sow maximum of 5 seeds in each pot, use root trainers since the roots grow deeply and love it when planting out. And if there is room it is much better to grow them in rows planted out 20 cm apart and trein them up the pea netting. Different varieties grows at different speed, and do benefit from being grown on their own.

If you soak the seeds like I did you will have to change the water every 2/3 days. You can just soak them for 24v hours and then plant them into the pots if you like, it's up to you. Also, in this video... I didn't show it but I actually planted 3 pots of seeds, instead of 2. I went out and bought an extra packet of seeds a day or two later and planted them out. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video :-)

Have to say iv never ever seen a technique like this , , they don't like have thier roots interfered with , and you have them planted sooooo close together it would be impossible to thin them, are they not very over crowded ?
@AllotmentGrowHow
@AllotmentGrowHow 2 жыл бұрын
I work at a plant nursery and this is how we grow and sell them to the public every year, the only difference is that we use a much smaller pot than the one featured in this video. You'll find that they are way tougher than you think, if I want to thin these out I just split the group into 2 sections and that works. Sowing them into individual root trainers I find doesn't produce any better or worse results. Ultimately do what works best for you :-)

@AllotmentGrowHow
@AllotmentGrowHow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, put enough water in the jar to cover the sweet peas - leave it on a window sill. It doesn't have to be a sunny one necessarily. If you are going to leave the seeds in the water as long as I did - 13 days... then you'll need to change the water every 2/3 days. I suggest you soak the seeds for 2 days only and then plant them in your pots. My most recent video shows you what 2 days of soaking does to the seeds. The video is called what am I sowing in March, if you fancy watching it :-)

@AllotmentGrowHow
@AllotmentGrowHow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tommo, have you pinched out the tops of your sweet peas yet? Ideally you want to plant them out when there's little chance of a frost. I've got some growing at the moment and I'm looking to plant them out in April, and even then we might get a late frost... but that's when they're going in. Harden the sweet peas off a little by putting them outside during the day and bringing them in at night for a week or so. Then plant them out in the garden. Hopefully they should be ok :-)

I need help please! I bought my mom some seeds for King Tut sweet peas and from what I gather they can be quite difficult to grow. We are in San Diego so that gives you an idea of our climate can anybody out there give me at least some tips or pointers? My mother has an awfully good green thumb but even she is kind of intimidated with what we've heard about the difficulty of these
@AllotmentGrowHow
@AllotmentGrowHow 4 жыл бұрын
I've never grown them myself but wouldn't be intimidated by them. Why are they difficult to grow? They're supposed to be a dwarf variety. Plant them in a pot that contains multi purpose compost, keep them watered and indoors. When the weather warms up plant them outside. I'd honestly not worry about them, it seems they like a long hot summer to thrive and are annuals, so they'll come back every year. Get them started indoors and they'll be fine.

@@AllotmentGrowHow thanks for the advice! I got the idea that they were difficult to grow from the comments people were leaving on the website where I bought them. a few people said that they could not get them to germinate or sprout and that it was a very difficult process but I did a little bit more research last night after posting that comment and sounds like you're spot on it should be no problem at all
