There is a mechanized way of growing it and the machinery exists in Spain. Thats the only way Australia could grow this commercially as it is extremely labor-intensive. It would be a good crop for the South Australia region. For those small growers, selling the bulbs would be a better way of making money than the saffron itself. A fun fact is that Iran grows some 97% of world production. I like the name Saffy :-)

The crocus sativus (saffron crocus) is a sterile plant, it does not produce seeds, or at least none that are fertile. Instead, they reproduce through their bulb (or rather, corm). The corms spawn off underground, using energy gathered after the flowers die off and while the "grassy" plant is active during the winter. During early spring, when the grass is almost done dying back is the best time to get and divide the corms, in my opinion. This is because the remaining grass will show you where to dig with less wasted effort and the most amount of nutrition gotten by the plant from the foliage. The baby corm are a bit obvious, they're generally miniatures of the mother corm and attached onto the mother, and some may even fall off the mother on their own, though you shouldn't be afraid to pull off any that stubbornly stick to the mother. Corms smaller than about a 5 cm diameter tend to not flower and need to wait another year or two or three (depending on corm size) before they're big enough to support flower growth. Corms bigger than a 5 cm diameter tend to have at least one flower, and at 11 cm or larger, can have up to 5 flowers on one plant. Saffron crocuses can be left in their growing location without interference for up to 3 years, before they get too clustered by their children and have to be divided into proper spacing once more, otherwise it will affect flower growth. The saffron crocus is one of the very few crocuses that bloom in the fall, most are spring/early summer bloomers, however, don't be fooled by anyone claiming that they sell the autumn crocus for saffron, because autumn crocus is the name of a different plant with similar coloring, and they're poisonous. You DO NOT want to confuse autumn crocus with saffron crocus. You want, very specifically the Crocus Sativus (it's the proper name for the saffron crocus). So if you're going to get saffron to grow, don't be fooled by anyone selling saffron seeds (they don't exist) or autumn crocus (they are NOT saffron crocuses, and ARE poisonous). Buy corms instead, and if given the opportunity, buy larger rather than smaller. Don't pull up the corms in early foliage time, as this will stunt the corm and flower growth. I hope this helps!

Yes I agree the Saffron spice is a cheap herb 🌿 that came out of the Bible the same as cinnamon. Songs of Solomon Chaper 4 virus 14 Read it for yourself. Thats where my parents got my name from. The politicians are the ones who r getting rich off Saffron... their government are working these people for nothing in these Saffron fields they should be making 15$ pre hour or more. Instead McDonald's make more per hour then these people does this is back bracking hard work. And the government should pay them more money 💰 the politicians are using Saffron fields for their gold mine. Their to much work that goes in the Saffron spice. And they claim that's why it's so high. Why don't they pay these people who works the Saffron fields more money then they do? We used to vote for the government to help us now we're voting too help our governments get ritch. Because Saffron spice is not making anyone rich but the government... The government is using the American people too make every almighty Dollar they can. They don't care rather the people live or die anymore. Their looking out for number one themselves. Both parties of the government is golders and that's a fact. They are all liars and Criminal's The Dem's don't need the people's vote. Their the biggest Criminal's Of both parties!!
