I attended a meal at my friend's home where he invited me to taste different dishes from India. I learned that plain yogurt is a must for Indian cuisine. The most amazing item though was the rice with saffron. You could see the red and orange saffron lightly mixed throughout. My friend watched me take a bite and scolded me for swallowing so quickly. "My friend, place it in your mouth, take a bite, then breathe through your mouth". The flavor was indescribable. I closed my eyes and could taste many different things. To this day, I have not had a meal so great. Sohel Appu Ahmed, my friend, I hope you are well.

must read - I'm a saffron producer. I have years of personal experience with saffron, it's expensive because it's mostly hand work, gathering saffron flower is really hard probably mexicans who gather strawberries in southern US can feel how hard it is but you should add cold air to it. believe me people you don't want to do it. Spain's saffron is mostly Iranian saffron labled or rebranded as Spanish, thanks to the corrupt goverment of Iran we can't export our own saffron and make profit (billions of dollars) and Spain is making billions of dollars by selling Iranian saffron the profit of which belongs to the hardworking iranians like me who have to live in poor condition so a bunch of thieves in Spain and Iran can make profit, next time when you're buying saffron you should remember how corrupt its industry is and actual producers of saffron (the farmers) aren't recieving even ONE PRECENT of the profit they truly deserve.

Now I understand why saffron costs so much! It’s incredible how much effort and care goes into producing such a small amount, totally worth it for the flavor it brings.

I was looking for the word 'India' in the entire video, but could not find it. But, when there was another video by Business Insider (still standing) where they portrayed Kashmir, they didn't leave any stone unturned to insult and speak against India.

I'm Iranian. We are the biggest producer (and maybe the biggest consumer) of it. You can find a lot of foods with Saffron in it in Iran, even there is an extremely delicious ice cream with Saffron. It's not inexpensive at all in Iran, but I didn't expect that the spice that I consume daily is the most expensive spice in the world. Is there any western food with Saffron in it?

@@marinajabra6415 It doesn't have specific taste. The taste of it is different on different foods, because it usually use for seasoning and marinating. You should infuse it (like a tea) before consume it. in my opinion at first try it on rice, you will be shocked how it taste has changed. If you enjoy, you can try it for marinating chicken(Joojeh kabab).

I bought my little saffron box from a shop right next to saffron fields in Kashmir. I am pretty sure it’s original. About 4-5 strands in a glass of warm milk every night, doesn’t colour the milk much, but has a very faint heavenly smell. The taste is so good. Earlier I used to buy from local shops from other places, and it used to colour the milk (fake colours) and with literally no smell. Once you taste the real deal, u never forget it. The guy is right, it’s difficult to fake the taste.

It’s very educative programme . One flower gives a few strands of saffron , it’s really a laborious task to collect saffron from the flowers. I wish we could get genuine saffron in the Indian stores .

I remember when me and my grandma tried to make saffron spice. Since in a forest near where my grandma lives saffron grows in spring, we decided to try to make the spice fir fun. We picked two baskets full of it, we took out the whole middle and it still wasn't enough to cover a bottom of a tea plate.

My sister is a chef. (like professional) and one day me and her went to Costco. We were like omg! saffron for 40$ a gram! we bought it excited. she has had saffron before and i've never tasted it. Anyway we get cooking and she says its "weird, didn't taste right", something about texture. I thought she was being pretentious, but we noticed it came from spain. it would only be a few years later we got news that a good deal of Costco's low cost "Spanish Saffron" may have been fraudulent. Just goes to show how easily we trust brands... i really want to try real saffron! :(

My grandma had those in her garden, they gave 3 or 4 bristles and my nana managed to collect a lot of them without knowing how much money she had in that old honey jar lmao I used to have so many dishes with saffron, I was so lucky, I can only describe it as umami, savory, great taste, 2 o 3 bristles are enough to spice a whole meal (my grandma used it to make homemade saffron bread, delicious)

Even if the climate is dry it’s typically hot as well, just source out the water in condensation cubes through out the field. You may need a couple hundred but considering the difference could be gaining an additional 35%-55% percent flower yield the selling price would even out with the first two batch’s. Connect the cubes together with a tap line and every morning and night will produce water, the larger amount of surface area aloud to capture temperature changes in the air the more extra water you’ll accumulate for the fields.

Same problem is going on here in Turkey. Government is selling lands that are supposed to used for saffron. Because it makes more mony for them, they aren't thinking about farmers/people. And saffron is so delicate that it could only grow on perfect condition of Safranbolu, a small region in Turkey.
