A couple years ago I heard thyme, right out of the spice jar was great for decongesting your sinuses. I took about half a teaspoon and just chewed it up and sure enough it worked. I figured fresh thyme might be helpful to have on hand and taste a bit better, so I bought a small plant today.

Just a note: experts now recommend against putting gravel in the bottom of pots. Just fill the whole pot with soil.

By putting rocks in the bottom of the pot, it doesn’t solve the water problem, but raises the soggy water level in your pot to above the rock line.

Same! I call thyme my zombies cause they dampen and still grow lush on the tips. It’s been months and they’re still a few 3” tall sprigs, not nearly as lovely as these videos. My gals struggle under my care. My bad. I just love a crazy plant! I got potted glories that die down and bounce back by the week. They were supposed to be heavenly blue, but they’re alpine white moonflowers. I call the glories my bad mamma jammas. Them gals is crazy!

thyme likes full sun with temps of 75-85 degrees. it is cold hardy so will die back in the winter but grow again in the spring

Most plants burn in direct evening sun. I learned that lesson first-hand too, but thyme recovers. As long as the tip or head still has green, ur plant is still alive. I plan to pluck burnt leaves and bury up to the green when I transplant. I’m in zone 7B, on the NC/VA line. I just set my thyme outside under a covered porch. The sun does what it does and that’s the best I can do for my plants. Come winter, I may get a wand light for a plant shelf. Idk yet.

Does it grow better in clay or plastic pots? I’m in North Central Florida so hot and humid... if in the ground should it be in full sun or dappled light (not shade)...? Thank you for all opinions and many blessings 🌱🌿

Same thing here. I went through 3 new thyme plants from home depot and they all after about 3 weeks die. It's gradual over the 3 weeks and I do everything right. Good potting soil, water daily but not drowned, sun daily.
@NerakGreen
@NerakGreen 2 жыл бұрын
Y’all say, water. I ask, soil? Sounds like maybe there’s too much food in the soil or the soil isn’t draining enough. People discourage adding rocks to soil, but I don’t see the issue with it in a forever pot. If the forever pot is getting outside water, it should be draining as quickly as possible and rocks would help that process. I started my thyme in a cell by peppering it over the soil. It grew domed with fuzzy white mold that didn’t travel in transplant. I top dust with food-grade D earth, which robs acid, and always bottom water. It dampened, but still grows lush on the ends. I’m about ready to transplant and yes I am using rocks on the bottom and throughout the soil for drainage. This beast will end up indoors, so I don’t want any larvae coming in with em.

Every time I buy a Thyme plant from home Depot it just dies. I repot them right away with good potting soil right after buying them and gave them water every day, since I live in the desert. I give them plenty of sun. They start dying and within three weeks the whole plant is finally dead. I gave up

Don’t water every day. Water when her tips start to droop. Don’t do what ur supposed to do, do what shows positive results. Listen to your plant. Bottom watering is preferred. That’s where u just let the pot sit in water for about 15-30 mins when she’s droopy and dump unused water out. For a big pot, water about a quarter to half cup at a time on topsoil till ya get runoff. Don’t shower ur plant, just hold her foliage aside and water topsoil.

What type of pot do you use and does it need holes at the bottom
@olive4naito
@olive4naito 7 жыл бұрын
Melissa Lauder You need holes. You can drill them in if you have a drill and the pot is plastic. Clay pots usually already have holes and are more breathable so the plant will be less prone to root rot but you will have to water more frequently.
@NerakGreen
@NerakGreen 2 жыл бұрын
All plant pots need holes for drainage. Dollar Tree has nice plastic one gallon pots. I just stab em in triangles with a small steak knife. A lot of my seedlings start in a half of a 2 liter or 16oz water bottle, with holes in the bottom. Waste not, ya know. Country Crock would be proud of all the seedlings I’ve grown in their bowls. The lid makes a nice drip tray.
