Hello, first year gardener here and so glad I found your channel ! Quick question, can I skip the planting in first container and simply plant seed individually in the nursery pot ?
@TowardGarden

Hello. Sure you can. If you choose to start in individual pots, I suggest to start feeding with diluted liquid fertilizer (such as fish emulsion 5-1-1) when seedlings are 3-4 inch tall so they grow stronger (once a week). Welcome aboard and thank you very much for your comment!

Absolutely beautiful!! I had the worst crop of tomatoes last year. I think I had some bad seeds. There were mixed tomatoes growing from one stalk, Roma and cherry looking tomatoes. The flesh was like leather and insides were hard and not juicy. Very strange, indeed. I will try again this year😊 Thank you for sharing as always💕
@VeronicaPalahniuc

Maybe you had F2 seeds,that are second-generation seeds.Seeds saved from F1 hybrid plants will not produce plants that are true to the parent type. F1 hybrid seed is expensive as it has to be recreated by crossing the parent inbred lines again. Self pollination of the parent inbred lines leads to poor quality plants called 'selfs'. Buy seeds from a reliable source!

@@VeronicaPalahniuc Interesting! I never had problems growing tomatoes before last year. I tried a NEW seed company and I will NEVER use them again. The tomatoes weren’t the only crop that didn’t grow well with seeds from that company. Thank you for your input 💕

It can happen to all of us, specially with tomatoes. I think it mainly is due to weather conditions. If the temperature fluctuates a lot, it will be stressful for tomatoes and it effects the ripening of the fruits. But it can be due to many conditions and yes seeds are one of them. I appreciate your comment and hope you will have a better harvest this year.😊

How do you keep bugs and animals away?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 4 ай бұрын
It really depends on the pest and animal type. For animals, I mainly rely on my dog, he is a great help. For pests, the best is to prevent. I regularly check my plants and with the first sign of pest presence, I act depending on the pest type. But usually neem oil mix and Spinosad mix is my first choice. They work great for me. If the plants don't need pollination to set fruit, such as lettuce or cabbage, garden netting provides a good protection. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

@@Seigne_craftroom Ok, not sure if you already know this but let me explain a little more. There are 2 types of tomatoes: Indeterminate and Determinate. Indeterminate ones grow taller and produce tomatoes season long. This type of tomato may benefit from removing suckers. Determinate tomatoes, such as the one in this video, are shorter and bushier and produce tomatoes in a very short period and then stop producing. That is why you want more branches to produce more fruits while it can. Determinate tomatoes are perfect for containers and do not need pruning (my favorite type). Do the plants need to be hardened off before transferring to the garden?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
Like any seedling, if your grow them inside, you need to harden off your seedlings first. I usually keep my seedlings outside in a filtered sunlight area or 4-6 hours of early morning sunlight. If night temperature is below 40-45F, I bring them inside otherwise will keep them outside to adopt to night conditions. To harden off, try to take them out in morning sunlight for one hour for the first day, then add another hour every day for one week. This will gradually increase seedlings intensity to become strong and adopt to outdoor conditions. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

From the time i planted my seeds I am having a lot of problem with fungus gnats. What do I do?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
There are two aspects you need to work on. First is the flying gnats. You can use yellow stickers around the seedlings to catch them. Also try to keep top of soil not too soggy and let it dry to not attract them. But second and most importantly, is their eggs/larvae in the soil that harm the roots and plants. For that the most effective is using Mosquito Bits, which is a biological larvicide. I have listed that on my amazon page for your reference: www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6/list/XLDNRZO26ESK?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d . Another good choice is to have seed tray protected by garden netting plus spraying neem oil mix on plants and on soil surface. Hope this helps and good luck!

@TowardGarden

You can, but it is best if you start tomatoes indoors and early in the season. They a have a long growing time and if you start directly in the garden, you need to make sure it is warm enough for the seedlings to grow. And if you wait for the warm weathers, you may hit the late summer or early fall season (too hot or cold). You can decide based on your weather conditions. Hope this helps and thanks for visiting.
