How to Grow Kale from Seed to Harvest. We grew this for the chickens but soon realize it's tasty for us to eat too.
#hollisnancyshomestead #kale #garden
Learn how to grow this Giant sized kale that remains tender even as the leaves grow to an astounding 3 feet long. This variety of kale was long appreciated in the UK as a chicken crop, but it has been re-discovered as a tasty culinary variety.

Hollis and Nancy thanks for the video it sure mirrors the start of my fall garden in southern Oregon . The fall starts just could not handle the unexpected triple digit lengthy heat. I did just what you did and started another germination to attempt a replant .The new starts are doing well waiting for the temps to come down to plant along with the survivors. Farming sure is grounding when it is difficult but God inspires us to learn and celebrate success

I dehydrated some and made kale powder for smoothies and soups and froze a lot. It’s so good for you! I also am now completely addicted to making kale chips using olive oil and some garlic salt and Parmesan cheese! Soooo yummy. Just don’t overcook know the oven or it’s like paper. What a genuinely nice video! I’m impressed, from start to finish! I planted kale last summer, in NC. ONLY 2 plants came up, and I ended up sick, and had to stay with daughter about 60 minutes from my home. I was gone for 4 1/4 months. Got home in early-mid January, and those two heads of kale got huge, and now I’m looking to harvest them, and see how I could fix them. This year, I’ll plant more, hopefully I can get them to germinate more. But glad I watched this video. It is very helpful! Thank you so much! Have a Blessed upcoming season! With a bountiful harvest! 💞💞🙏🙏🙏💞💞

Love it! You and Nancy are awesome. Thank you so much for this video I was just telling my sister that I'm going to end up putting fish heads underneath the future vegetables that I'm going to plant and she looked at me like I was crazy because she said I'd rather eat the fish than put it under the plant but the fish that we're getting I'm buying halibut they're very inexpensive at this time and the fish is big enough to cut into like three pieces. I do plan on getting some black cow manure and adding sand into my beds come august. Going to plant tomatoes in that medium and also have a round large raised bed that I plan on planting kale, tatsoy, and bok choy in the same medium. Hoping for the best there. Lol this past summer here in Central Texas was horrible. Everything died it couldn't withstand the heat that we were having from 107° to 111° non-stop. Luckily we are now in the low to mid 90s and we should continue going down. Love watching y'all's videos I am learning so much thank you again for all you do. Continue on continuing on... Those kale leaves are just very oppressive.. I was thinking man one can leave can make a massive veggie roll and you could split it between several people hahaha

Nice job Hollis looking after the chickens. What are your thoughts on cinder blocks for raised beds? Some say they’re bad. Some say treated wood is bad. I’d just like to know how you feel about it. After all, you’ve reached your 60s and seem to be doing fine lol
@joeschmo7957
@joeschmo7957 Жыл бұрын
Of course, treated wood is BAD. You don't want that chemical residue in your soil. Not sure of cinder blocks. My dad always said "Cedar... resists the weather and lasts forever".

Pressure Treated lumber has changed a lot in the last 25 years. I have no concerns with leaching in the soil. This is always a hot button for gardeners so I leave it up to the individual. Cinder blocks are fine for raised beds.

Long time subscriber and sister in Christ. I was wondering if you have considered a cover crop to improve the soil/sugar sand that you have. You can still use black kow for planting but at least you won't be starting from pure sand. I also remember reading a long time ago that you didn't want wood chips because of the termites.

If I may, when you are opening the bags, after making the cuts at the bottom make a cut few inches long toward the top to allow air in so when you pour down the bag there is no "suction" and it will empty itself without effort.

Wonderful video! Couple of questions - (a) Do you consume this variety of Kale or is it only for the chickens? (b) That was a big load of Black Kow you used. I counted around 36 bags for the whole bed. At $6 per bag (HD/Lowe's), that's a good chunk of money. It is probably lower for you since you buy in bulk or sponsored by Black Kow. Did the cost work out for you in this particular case?
