My uncle grows these in his backyard. He isn’t a gardener, so he just lets it grow naturally without any fertilizer. They get huge! He always cuts one winter melon into 3 pieces to share amongst relatives. We put it in soups!

This video is just in time! I harvested a 5 kg winter melon today. The volunteer plant grew from seeds that ended up in the compost. Didn't add any fertilizer. I called it the mystery vine because I couldn't figure out what plant it was until the fruit started to appear. 😊

Do you recommend a 5 or a 10 gallon grow bag to grow the ash gourd melon? Can you grow more than 1 ash gourd in a single grow bag, say 2 or 3? If I grow them in a raised garden bed, is there a recommended distance between plants when growing them in a garden space? This video was well made as you had examples ready to go at each stage of the process from seed to harvesting of the melon. Nicely done. Thank you.

For each plant that goes into the ground (or grow bag), does the plant only produce one gourd at a time, or multiple gourds spaced a little time apart? Or does the plant wait to produce one gourd completely at a time then start a new gourd? How do we know when they are ready to harvest? Big thanks from Hawai'i!!!

Good to see a video on ash gourd cultivation. Doesn't this grow in the California summer? In the plains of India, ash gourd grows most of the year round. We preferably sow seeds in the rainy season (June-August). Planting in warmer conditions reduces the time to harvest. The gourds are harvested in 3-4 months.
