I think a lot of people want to grow coffee trees but do not know where to get the coffee seed unroasted in a plantable state

Shade grown coffee is actually better because it grows slower, allowing it to absorb more flavor

I am not after making my own coffee….here in Southern California we have coffee from all over the world…I mean the best coffee and inexpensive, what I want is the peel of the coffee cherry (after drying it)it makes the best tasting tea and it has more caffeine than the coffee itself…so I guess it is time to grow coffee plants…

Thank you !! I have room for 1 plant next to my cathedral windows in my entrance foyer where the 2 windows are next to each other in the configuration of an L. Based on your instructions I'll grow one plant there in a 5 gal bucket & move it outside when temps reach 40+F in summer & autumn then back inside in winter. Thank you !!

I have 2 coffee grown by seed it's around 2 1/2 years old. I was going to ask you the question but you gave me the answer when you answered Gary. So this mean that I should have flowers soon. I also have a few cuttings from the plants. Loved and Subbed.

Can coffee be grown outdoors in hot, humid climates, like in Southeastern Texas, or would it be better in that situation to grow them indoors with the A/C set kinda warm, like 75 or 80 degrees?
@LogeesPlants7 жыл бұрын
They can be grown out doors in the summer in east Texas.

My coffee tree did well on the porch in the summer in northern Oklahoma. It is inside all year because the squirrels ate the coffee cherries off before they ripened.

Last year was the first year my coffee plant fruited. It seemed to do it much earlier than this year since it is already June and none of the buds have opened. Most are still green and some are getting a little bigger but some are turning brown. None have fallen off thought. Any thoughts?
@LogeesPlants5 жыл бұрын
How many hours of sunlight is the plant receiving? Is it being fertilized at all? If so, what is the NPK value on the fertilizer and how often is it being applied?
@nicholashoffnagle23965 жыл бұрын
I gave it an 8-4-2 fruit slow release fruit tree fertilizer a month or so ago. At the beginning of this year when lasts years cherries were still ripening I was putting leftover coffee grounds in the pot occasionally. It gets direct sun during the day sometimes but I close the window shades during the late afternoon.
@LogeesPlants5 жыл бұрын
Try a blooming fertilizer instead to see if it helps. One with an NPK below 15-15-15 with the middle number being the highest of the three but still below 15.

Quick question. Would old coffee grounds be a good compost for the coffee trees?
@LogeesPlants8 жыл бұрын
+Mr. Coffee Guy (Crusader) -Not sure , I doubt it would hurt.
@hailnohero8 жыл бұрын
If it is broken down yes, but I wouldn't add it directly uncomposted. Add it to a compost pile and let it break down before adding.

I'm growing coffee (coffea arabica), but from seed, which means I have to wait some time before they become capable of flowering and fruiting. If I could somehow acquire a grafted coffee plant, or one raised from cuttings, would I stand a more realistic chance of witnessing my plant bear fruit? I don't suppose there is any possibility that you could ship plants to England, if I provided a phytosanitary certificate? The only indoor plants for sale here in the UK appear to be the bog-standard foliage houseplants that one can easily find in their home depot or Walmart store. I am interested in the more unusual and exotic, including tropical fruit plants, many of which make great indoor specimens.
@LogeesPlants9 жыл бұрын
Gary Card A coffee plant that is grown form cutting or grafted will flower sooner but seed grown plant take only about 3 years to bloom. Once the plants has developed lateral branches it will start to flower. This is usually at about 3’. Sorry we can not ship out plants outside of the US.

I've heard it's difficult to get quality coffee in a home situation because of the elevation. Is there any truth to this?
@LogeesPlants8 жыл бұрын
That I’m not sure of. Coffee flavor changes due to the environment but whether a home grown or high elevation environment changes the flavor I don’t know.
@saintmichael27597 жыл бұрын
Brian, yeah. It depends on where you live. As far as Coffea Arabic goes, all of the finest ones grown world wide have several elements in common: Higher elevation, a soil with a high surface area (porous mediums like volcanic lava rock or terra-preta biochar), and a rich soil with a high amount of microbial activity. Arabica is a mountain plant and in Ethiopia's Highlands grown at 6000ft. Kona, in Oahu is grown between 1800-3000ft. It's good to know your latitude and elevation if you want to fine tune coffee. But really not necessary for a small hobby grower. Keep in mind, you don't have to grow so high up, as you get farther from the equator. If you are in a low elevation, you may want to consider Coffea Canephora (AKA Robusta coffee). It is grown at low altitudes, produces far more beans than arabica, has twice the caffeine, but known for being bitter (It's one of my favorites). Many lattes and extra-strong caffeine coffees are Robusta or Robusta blends. Anyhow, I hope this helps. Good luck!

Do they need pollinated to fruit?

If kept indoors, they would benefit from hand pollination.
