Thanks for the upload. My dad did this when rebuilding three old Barns, solid Oak, he was given a pile of ‘super giant bent matchstick’, and sorted it all by hand and refitted every joint and made new ones where the barn would be split into rooms. On one there was a hewn log 40 feet long and this was used at the bedrooms and toilets"RSJ’ but in wood and at one end it was seven feet high, and the other was just over five feet high and acted at the tops of all the bedroom doors.

I work at Mark Fritch Log Homes in Oregon and it's hard work, but the product is beautiful and something to be proud of. I can point at a house and say "I built that."

I worked for a log home co. for 8 years,mostly as a peeler. Nice to see a good pro show how it is done. Far better technique than other videos I have seen. Nice knife too.

Do you happen to know how much the average peeler would make per hour/ per year (in Canadian dollars or US)?
@MrFritz12813 жыл бұрын
I haven't put online as of yet any of my own work ,but the videos i have seen from BC log has given me some inspiration for sure.I've gotten quite good at cutting a log in half and many other things.

7 years later have you made any progress towards that dream. Im starting my dream right now. Ill let you know in 7 years how Im making out!
@MBannon143 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan-sl8mw At the moment I am 23 years old and still finding my way. That dream is still in the books though. I have improved my woodwork skills over the years slowly and am consistently improving. No cabin is in sight at the moment but with time and dedication it will come.

i used to peel logs(of course smaller then those), with a swiss knife blade
@bclogstairandrail11 жыл бұрын
They were green logs, it gets harder to peel as it gets dryer. :)

I agree, but it still builds some pretty good muscle still.

You talked about the brown layer, on and off but I could not understand what you said why leave it on and the benefits, why take it off and the benefits etc. What are the reasons for stripping it other than looks? Does it dry quicker? Does it protect from bugs if you leave the brown layer on? etc. Thanks for sharing and taking the time. Peace
@bclogstairandrail10 жыл бұрын
The brown layer can be left on more for looks, but as it dries out it tends to peel off and look ragged especially outside. It can also a tracked bugs and give them a starting place if it is left on fairly thick. I usually only use this if a customer really wants a rustic look. Hope this helps :)

Copy that, thanks. Peace, Reese

what kind of trees are the best at making a log cabin I would like to build one but just big enough for camping or hunting in can you help me out and let me know which one to pick please????
@bclogstairandrail9 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I think it depends on the area of the country your are in. In British Columbia, Fir or Cedar are really good choices. As long as you have a good over hang on your building to protect it from the whether most varieties of tree will work, however the straighter they are the easier it will be to work with. :)

ok thanks I live in New Brunswick so ill look for some good trees n then try it out :)

If you go to this web page: logbuildingtools.ca/peeling_tools.html this fellow sells the type that I use , probable "C" would be the one that I would pick. He does mail order, but you might also be able to get one from a tool store closer to you. Good Luck
