I played a lot in high school, club, beach all of it. These videos are very helpful because I'm teaching my friends who were soccer players how to play. Great explanations that put it into simpler terms that are easy for them to understand. It's hard to explain something that you just do naturally because of the years of practice to someone who is completely new.

Handsetting right now is the most difficult, instransparent technique to me in Beach Volleyball. Some say you are not allowed to lower your upper arms. Some say it should be almost without noise. Others say other things and it's confusing and annoying. Today I met someone whose hand sets where as soft as a knive going trough butter and he entirely did it with his wrists almost without any sound (no arm stretch!). But where do you learn a technique like that? It seems to be a secret that only few people learn at some secret classes. Many people say I hold it to long but nobody can tell me how long is to long or where they read these rules. Is is 1.00 second? Or is 1.2783 seconds to long? Physically you have no other choice than letting the ball sink down a bit in your hands and also lower your forearms to take the speed from the ball before pushing it into the air again. I simply don't understand how to do that in under at least half a second -- but I usually need at least half a second from contact to release. Everything else would be just pushing the ball with stiff hands like most beginners and even advanced beginners do -- which is wrong according to Mark Burik ;) !!! I've seen many videos about hand setting and I think none of them explained how it REALLY works -- including this one. I train it many times with solo drills but I'm never sure whether I do it right or wrong. It's crazy.

I feel you, its the exact same thing for me. During winter im playing indoor and with the setting technique there i get even more confused xD.

The wrist thing is like indoor setting. I think indoor setting is way better. Look at the olympians Micah Chrsitianson’s hands. It’s more of a flick of wrists and minimal elbow flexion. These beach players would be close to being called for lifts indoors

As someone new to volleyball I feel this comment so much. I’ve watched so many videos and talked to a bunch of people and it’s all so confusing. So many people say don’t bend the elbow after catching it but when you watch basically everyone compresses at both the wrist and elbow to slow the ball.

Practicing setting on wall while sitting down on bent knees is also a very nice drill. It really builds up the arms and shoulders which play a crucial role in setting

"if your feet aren't stable, dont hand set" - very good tip when coaching players new to beach!

yeah it's important but just a tiny fraction of what makes a hand set a good hand set...

Now a year later I think I've become much better getting closer and closer to just set with my hands / wrists and getting really smooth sets out of it. It is about these things: - super relaxed wrists / hands thzat create a triangle or bowl like shape depending on your individual physique (the shape looks a bit different for every player) - letting the ball sink into your hands, FEEEL IT'S WEIGHT and when you feel that NATURAL TENSION in your hands from the ball having sunk into your hands to the max point that tension will create the force to effortlessly catapult the ball back into the sky like a TROMPOLINE! All this takes less than a second... in the beginning give yourself time even if you think you hold it to long.. it needs exercise and being relaxed! you'll get faster by the weeks and months! You don't even necessarily need to use all your body and extent your arms when you have become comfortable with this technique tought it's still recommended.. training with a 1 KG medicine ball can help or just throwing the volleyball high (that will give the ball "more weight" - footwork - stable posture - shoulders UP! - the right position of your hands (not to close to the head and not to high.. again depending on your individual anatomy and proportions) setting over and over again in countless solo exercises will help you IF you pay attention to that "sweet spot" of the ball having sunk into your hands and the tension in your hands / wrists is asking you to get released!
