This is a short video on how to handle Stingray. It's part of the longer video 'sight fishing for stingray' after a number of requests I made a shortened version for people to use on the beach without having to forward thru the other one.
Thanks so much to everyone that has subscribed and helped me to reach the milestone of 2,000 subscribers. I can't believe its come this far and hopefully lots more still to come too.

Pulled one of these up the other day. Didn't really know how to handle then but I managed to get in back in the water unscathed without getting nailed. Definitely have more confidence after watching this. Now I've found the mark I'll be back after something larger. Do the tails come up over the ray? The one I had just swung it from side to side.
@Inshore_Angler
@Inshore_Angler 11 ай бұрын
You will often see the larger ones have less range of movement but can reach at least halfway up their backs. The small ones have a far more dangerous range of movement

Any advise on handling them from the boat? I hooked a few in the last weeks and it was not fun but I got away every time without getting stung.
@Inshore_Angler
@Inshore_Angler 11 ай бұрын
Circle hooks and a T bar at the side of the boat. If I can avoid bringing them in at all I will try to do that. I find a large landing net can be very beneficial for them as it kind of subdues the tail.

What do you think about flipping them over on the back and stepping on barb near the flippers with shoes? That's what I've don't the few times I caught them?
@Inshore_Angler
@Inshore_Angler 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not in favour of that method myself. You might notice I never hold them up for a pic either. The south Africans are well ahead of us in understanding these fish and they had rules in the world championships that they couldn't be flipped over or held vertical for the fish safety. There will be times when you have no choice but it's not the method I go for. Plus I'd be shititng it I'd get a stray lash of the spike. I hope I don't sound judgey here I don't know it all still learning myself

I think if your in a position that the fishes life is in danger and your not able to lift it you shouldn't feel bad about doing what was necessary. I said if I ever went to the likes of fuertaventura I'd get a large heavy duty tarp and try use that to slide the fish

Yes it's a common misconception that it's the end of the tail like a scorpion that does the damage. I remember one of the senior lads at a competition grabbing one by the tip of the tail and thinking he's in trouble lol. Thanks for the comment 👍

Came here after watching a bunch of people get stung by these guys, and was curious on how to hold ‘em. One other thing, when you wrap the towel around the tail do you have the towel go over and cover the end of the stinger? And when you grip the towel, do you hold the stinger and the actual tail together so it doesn’t move? (I think you would have to just by way of where you hand would have to be to grip the tail lol)
@Inshore_Angler
@Inshore_Angler 11 ай бұрын
Ya the tip of the tail is harmless so I aim to wrap the sting barb tight against the tail and grip them together in order to subdue it.

@Inshore_Angler

Hi man I think they can be pretty deadly. There is no cure for their venom as far as I know you just have to hope you pull thru. What I was always told is that they might not kill you straight away but if you had a weak heart or immune system it could kill you. Personally I would be very scared of getting hit by one

😲 handy to know thanks. I'll avoid for now so. Great work putting the vid out there for awareness. Think an awful lot off ppl out there are under the illusion that there is nothing in ireland that can be so dangerous.
