As someone just barely dipping their toes into harmonizing, I love how you layed out all the chords in a key you work with, and explained which to use. It finally clicks with me!

I'm just a computer scientist / programmer who's looking up some music theory because I want to make my coding experience better. Every time I write a piece of code I would like music to be played, now the sound that is played sounds crap and I wanted to check whats the algorithm behind making it sound nice. I came across your channel and I forgot while watching your video what I actually wanted to do and started thinking how fascinating music theory can be. Thanks for sharing this!

I have very little music knowledge and you explained it perfectly. Finally I understand what people mean by chord progression and the "I - V - vi - IV" thing, which I couldn't understand before. Are harmonics only chords, or you could harmonize a melody by creating another melody from notes from the chords or something? Sorry, I unfortunately don't have musical education, just learning from the internet.
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 11 ай бұрын
You can do either of those things but the harmony has to make sense. We have plenty of videos on how to harmonise a melody and how to combine melodies.

I underwent seven years of rigorous classical piano training in Russia, starting at the age of eight. Despite graduating with distinction, I lacked an understanding of harmony. Ear-playing and basic chord progressions eluded me entirely. In Russia, our training was stringent, with a mandate of practicing classical pieces for a minimum of eight hours daily. Creativity was not encouraged; it was reprimanded. Each attempt to play a favorite pop song by ear resulted in punishment, even physical. While I mastered the most intricate Chopin compositions flawlessly, my childhood was spent in repetitive, robotic devotion, a cog in the machinery of glorifying my nation and perpetuating the myth of "great Russian culture". Perhaps this is why Russian pop and rock music often feel rudimentary and unpalatable. Robots cannot create; they merely mimic.

That lesson was so very informative for me. It all made sense to me, after spending a year of learning Theory for Bass Players with Ariane Cap. I'm grateful for all of these types of videos. Just awesome thanks. I'll check out the other lessons..

I love your videos ! they help me understand music more thank u ! I was just wondering why in some songs in the bass/chord clef with find a single note instead of a triad ? this really confuses me
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk You might find a single note in the Bass because that’s what the composer wants or it might be that the bass notes imply chords. Depends on the particular context.
