The car setup was hilarious. You could make a video of just chucking walnuts under that thing --- I was laughing so hard. I mean it's genius, and yes totally dangerous, but very entertaining. The board with holes is a great idea. We discovered some black walnuts growing nearby today and I wondered if we could try harvesting them. But where to dump the herbicidal water leftover from rinsing them? Just down the drain? We could return the hulls to the area from whence they came, but I don't see hauling all that rinse water....

@robertwright70852 жыл бұрын
The wooden box with the holes is a pretty good innovation, the truck and the Jacks is an old way of doing them. My uncle did it with his tractor in the front yard. The bucket and drywall mud stirrer are the perfect way to clean all the black sludge off of them the dirty water can splash out of the bucket, that will contain juglone so be careful where you pour it off. I use a milk crate to pour off the dirty water after spinning, I do mine three times for each batch and they come out super clean. If you have access to a few milk crates that will be a good way to dry them off, milk crates can be stacked so they don't take ups so much room in your garage or shed! Be advised any way of cleaning walnuts will result in the release of a lot of juglone which kills other plants much like deadly nightshade, Black Walnut trees are known as the killer tree!. You don't want that on your yard or garden, the hulls will contain this substance as does the nutshells and the water you clean them with in the bucket. I use the nutshells on the edges of my landscaping mulch to keep down Creeping Charlie and other plants that invade the edges of my beds. You can compost the hulls but the toxic effect of the juglone can be degraded in two to four weeks. To crack the nuts I use a nut cracker I got from Roots and Harvest, its a good cracker but the bolts are kind of cheap so I replaced them with better quality case hardened bolts. So far the cracker is holding up very well with the new bolts, before I replaced them the bolts bent after less than fifty nuts. I can do hundreds of nuts in a real short time with that cracker after the bolts were replaced with no damage to the bolts! Roots and Harvest, put better bolts in your cracker and charge another 20 bucks for it you dopes!
@BazookaIke Жыл бұрын
why is it so important to have the nuts so cleaned off? I know that getting the hull off helps speed up the drying process of the nuts inside the shell. But i've seen others talk about an extensive cleaning process. I dont understand the necessity completing cleaning the shells, when they are not edible and will be tossed away eventually.

Great video, thank you, I have a new walnut tree growing in my front yard. I can see how folks would be tempted to use the truck tire method but man that could be dangerous. And know that when you stop one rear tire from spinning the other tire is then moving at twice the speed of the speedometer with the arrangement of the gears in the rear differential. And your spider gears are spinning like mad as well through this method, it really isn't good for the rear differential.

I like the jig with 2 holes. What is the diameter of the holes? I wonder if one could use a pvc tube of the same diameter, and rig it to a wall like a can crusher with a 2x4 on a hinge to serve as the plunger. Then make a feed trough angled toward the pipe to feed one walnut at a time as you operate the plunger (a dam on the edge of the plunger could stop the line of walnuts as it crushes each walnut. A bucket under the pvc pipe would catch the hulled nuts. Or rig a bucket with an electic washing machine agitator to wash the nuts as they plunge into the wash bucket from the pipe. The bucket should be mounted to a board on the wall with a hinge, dunk tank fashion to dump hangman gallows style, but controlled with the lever rather than simple release and fall.
