How to harvest perennial cassava and preserve it for 365 days, homegrown food - Ep.165
Do you know? I have planted these trees cassavas for 3 years now, I just harvested them today. The cassava roots are very large. After harvesting, I process and preserve them by drying. Hopefully there will be no rain in the coming days, otherwise my cassava pile will be ruined
The subtitle as well as the detailed article I will update at the website "primitiveskills.net", the official website of Primitive Skills

Let's hope it doesn't rain! But let's say it can not be avoided. Is it possible to build something like a drying shed with a slow fire and walls to keep the moisture out?

its mostly starch ? casava.... starch converts to sugar which yeast loves to eat..... casava beer ? do they make it and if the laws there have changed i would say forget the cotton and grow hemp it has so many more uses and makes a better cloth , you have the facilities to grow and process it you could "rhett" it in the pond and skuctching it is a simple as putting a bunch of nails in the waterwheel axle to act as a comb.... hemp seed contains a healthy oil you can cook with and is also edible or usable as animal feed .. cotton pain in the butt plant hard to harvest and process

@@petepeterson4540 I looked up the poisonous side, it has a cyangenic glucose that has to be scraped, boiled and or dried. Not raw. Seriously, would you knowing and willingly ingest cyanide for $100!?! If the answer is yes, then you should seek medical help!

PSA to anyone planning to plant cassava for themselves! Please Please PLEASE remember to do your research - Cassava in its unprocessed form can be highly toxic, being high in cyanide deposits. Please make sure that any cassava you obtain fresh has been processed enough to be safe for human or animal consumption. The processing to make it into tapioca flour is usually sufficient (you see him start the process here), however caution is advised for first homegrown attempts. The wikipedia page on cassava has a number of concerning incidents in its report, so please be careful for your own sake.

I know yuca/cassava very well after yrs working with indigenous and mestizo farmers in the deepest of the Amazon forests (where the plant comes from). Just some comments: 1) Why do you *harvest* the entire crop at the same time? (btw, your skill at improving soil texture is exemplary as I have never seen anybody in the Amazon harvest the tubers like you are able to do). 2) You need to learn how to make *fariña de yuca.* It's made of grated and dried pulp to a course grainy consistency. It's easily stored and extensively used in soups, salads, and as a thickener to all sorts of meals. Delicious. 3) If you don't like fariña maybe try to make yuca 'beer', ie *masato.* This is a typical indigenous drink and made of fermented pulp where the traditional 'starter' is enzymes from human salvia. Since that isn't too hygienic ppl now often use sweet potato and sugar. Highly recommended as a nutritional breakfast booster before hard labor, but be aware, you can get drunk where you might have to face the jungle spirits, and the hangover is legendary (hahaha, I know). 4) Or if you have access to (palm?) oil you can make a slicer, slice the yuca in thin flakes and fry it just like potato *chips* (or French fries if you prefer). Point is: plant and harvest continually in smaller quantity as I'm sure the environment you're in allows for year round growth.

Being near a river means heaps of alluvial mineral rich sediment, also the wetness and heat of the jungle rot any dead matter very quickly so would build up a good layer of humus and tannic acids to decay the underlying clay, which is on limestone by the looks.

Some people call this dude fake because maybe he got a bit extra lime from outside sources (is the most legitimate claim I've seen cited so far, at least), but no matter what the truth is about that, can we all appreciate that he still puts in a hell of a lot of hard physical work into this? When was the last time you dealt with a pile of cassava roots that big?
