How to Harvest Rootstock for your Orchard the Easy Way
Easy to gather enough to expand your orchard. We've been preparing our new seeded orchard block. After pulling out the last trees, some have live roots that have rootstock shoots on them. We harvested these M-26 apple rootstock and heeled them in for next springs grafting workshop. I also show you the tools and technique we use to do this.

Thanks for the video. I bought an improved Meyer lemon this spring, and I just noticed it had sprung up a 3ft branch shooting straight up the middle from below the graft. I snapped it off, but was wondering if I could/should try to plant it to develop some roots to use it as a rootstock in a year or two? Thanks

Hi Steven. We are inheriting a cut down orchard in Idaho with a lot of root stock that’s grown back over 15 years since they were cut down. Should we graft right onto what’s in the ground? They’re pretty wild looking and we want to remove some to replant(and do NAP system), but they’re huge. Any tips?!
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can overgraft large rootstock, just use side branches and main trunks and add several scion per cut (I’ve seen 6 on one cut).

Certainly apples are harder to root from cuttings unless it’s the root. Best to get root shoots (suckers) and dig them up.

Depends on what rootstock cultivars you are looking for. If you already have some look up “stool bed propagation “. That’s the name of the propagation technique used in the nursery industry

@StefanSobkowiak

Depends on the rootstock size mostly. For large standard trees you can use seedlings, for semi dwarf and dwarf you want root strikes (rooted shoots coming off the root), look up “stool bed” the technique used to multiply rootstock.

All dwarf and semi dwarf numbered rootstock are vegetatively propagated cultivars that come from a seedling that was rigorously evaluated as a rootstock cultivar. Yes buy them, use seeds to get a standard 30’ (10m) tree.
