I'm not sure if your still checking on this post but if you just take the rotifer floss and connect it to some sort of hoop(like the top of the 5 gallon bucket with a hole cut thru in the center) enough where you can easily pour it all thru without creating a mess???? and then just take another clean bucket and pour the whole thing thru the floss. That might save you some time(im lazy and so my free time is very valuable to me :-). This information may on this thread somewhere in this thread but I'm lazy and didn't want to dig any further.

Would like to grow algae and use it to produce live food for perch fry (freshwater) - if you know of resources for the same I'd be greatly appreciative! Thanks for sharing your setup

Could you automate the system using a aqualifter on a timer for feedings and another float switch to keep the culture toped off? If so how often should feedings and cleanings be done to the culture bucket?
@fadifanous13 жыл бұрын
@stolen454 you can, but you have to culture more than you use for the feedings. I used to feed about 1/2 gallon a day and throw away 1/2 gallon. So if you set up the system where it uses the aqualifter to feed 1/2 gallona and replenish it with the float switch, it might work, but you have to manually takeout 1/2 gallon a day and keep up with feeding the nanochloropsis manually. IMO it will be a lot easier to do everything manullay than automate the system.

@airbus530 The daily harvest can feed up to 4 breeding tanks. I have 2 5g buckets....1 as a backup in case one fails. the salinity should always be between 1.018-1.020.

is it necessary to use a light when culturing the rotifers? Also how many mls of micro algae do you add to your rotifer bucket daily I have The RG Concentrated phyto type and I use a 5 gallon bucket with no light and I cover the top with a lid not sealed though , with an air stone in the bottom of the bucket I remove 4 cups of water from it daily and replace it with 1.019 newly mixed water am I doing this correctly? also I should note the bucket is just over half full of water kind of like yours Is, I am going to restart it today with a new bottle of rotifers from the store $20 since my culture seems to have crashed or at least I see hardly any in there!! any advice??

Not sure u are still follow up with this post but after u harvest the rotifers, u’ll just simply dump all of them into ur tank(with fish larvae) directly? Or u will filtered out the rotifers first? And last question. If u filtered out the rotifers, is it possible to reuse the water ?
@fadifanous13 жыл бұрын
@dontTouchMeThere91 you have to setup the tank and let it cycle for a bit before you start breeding because the fish like a stable environment, also I would get a really good protein skimmer and a good heater for both tanks. there is a lot to discuss in a comment though so watch my videos and ask me the questions as they arise

It lasts a pretty long time if you keep it in the fridge. Depending on how many rotifer cultures you have maybe it will last up to 2 months

You make a point to use that glove with your hand in the bucket but then you take it off. Would you not be worried about your dipping cup being contaminated with your fingers dipping the rots out and new water in? Or even the mesh back into the bucket?
@killsecured64645 жыл бұрын
I've been on Seabass station on my ojt days. Rotifers are fed on seabass fry. Its been a half kilometers where nanno production to rotifer to avoid contamination. But luckily its been contaminated by our co ojts. And yeah we screwed up. Hahaha. R.I.P. 60 tons of nannochloropsis oculata.

how you control temperature ? by changing water daily, would you ever still having high ph or ammonia problem ? thanks
@fadifanous9 жыл бұрын
the temperature of the room is pretty constant, but the rotifers can survive in a variety of temperatures unlike fish and corals. the water changes should take care of the ammonia and every now and then I restart the culture to start all over fresh and it keeps everything under control

What is the point of harvesting rotifers? What purpose. What is the benefit?
@shevyalvia64917 жыл бұрын
they are used to feed fish larvaes.
@freetilly77566 жыл бұрын
Rotifers reproduce rapidly. If you don't, they will stop reproducing sexually and the population will crash the system. Rotifers are sensitive to ammonia.
@kpiotrowski213 жыл бұрын
nice video! couldn't you just dump all the roti in a clean bucket every day before you harvest instead of wiping down the same one and loosening all the waste on the sides? just a thought.
@CandyFishRave13 жыл бұрын
nice this is so cool man you are doing such a great job!.. and where did you buy the Rotifers to start out with and there food?... =] *^_^*

i would suspend that bucket and make a hole at the bottom ,then cover it with the finest mesh , and just open a valve to drain some of it, then top off .

How long does the culture last
@bentleyboy729 жыл бұрын
+2jwells ideally itll continue to reproduce forever. just gotta keep up on the maintenance daily.
@freetilly77566 жыл бұрын
As long as you keep feeding and harvesting each day, indefinitely. When you don't have baby fish or corals, dump a portion of the rotifers in toilet or trash (sounds cruel, but the culture will die if you don't.
@fadifanous13 жыл бұрын
@CandyFishRave I bought the food from the link at rotifer.com
@fadifanous13 жыл бұрын
@Springs24 you could but they wont last very long as rotifers only have an 8 day lifespan and get eaten by corals and fish.
