*FAQ:* - “Wouldn't it be quicker to just breed the Pokemon I want in the first place?!" The answer is: sometimes. Any Pokemon that is able to breed requires a specific number of steps to hatch from an egg. Magikarp is the single Pokemon that requires the LEAST steps to hatch (1,280 steps per egg), while something like Gible requires MANY MORE steps to hatch (10,240 steps per egg). For this reason, this method might be a waste of time if you're breeding, for example, Pikachu (which requires 2,560 steps per egg), as Pikachu eggs can hatch fairly quickly. HOWEVER, if you're trying to hatch a Pokemon that takes a long time to hatch, this method will actually save you a lot of time, because it will allow you to hatch EIGHT TIMES MORE Magikarps in the same number of steps you could hatch one Gible. I have no idea why this confuses me so much. How does hatching 8x more Magikarp than Gibles help you? I understand that it will appear after a specific number of eggs. Even though its not mentioned in the video you can also change the shinies IVs and ability too if your not happy with them, with normal musuda once you hatch the shiny thats it, so if your not happy with its ability, IVs or gender you'd be stuck with it. For example say i got 10 magikarp eggs and found the 10th to be the shiny. I would reset and collect the first 9 magikarp eggs because I know the 10th will be the shiny, as soon as i collect those first 9 eggs i switch the karp out for a cyndaquil with both its HA and HP Grass and save as soon as I deposit it, (making sure the 10th egg doesn't spawn before i save) Then i collect the next egg(which would be the 10th) and hatch it. It will be shiny of course but it might not have its hidden ability or the hidden power grass i wanted, so what I do is you reset again but this time when you go to collect the egg instead of taking the shiny egg i reject it and take the next egg that appears, this egg will be shiny too but its ivs, ability, and gender might be different, if i still dont have the hidden ability i reset again and reject 2 eggs this time and collect the 3rd, if i dont get what i want again i reset and reject 3 and collect the 4th and so on and so on until i get what i want or the shiny stops appearing in the eggs. This is how i was able to get a shiny hidden ability cyndaquil with hidden power grass and shiny HA menetric with HP ice. I may get the shiny cyndaquil using normal musuda but it may or may not have its hidden ability and doing all that breeding just to get a shiny without the its hidden ability or the correct IVs is disappointing.. I personally breed this way so i can make sure the shiny can be competitive. I also breed like 5 different pokes that i want to have shiny first that way if I dont get a shiny, lets say cyndaquil, with the right ability and/or HP IVs, I just switch out for one of the other 5 I want to be shiny and get that shiny and try to get the cyndaquil on another breeding attempt. This helps a lot if your trying to get a shiny with the right hidden power IVs.

If you don’t care about Hidden Power, you can just get the Pokémon to 100 using SOS on Wild Chansey’s (You can try to farm lucky eggs too, it takes a while but I farmed 7 of them). Alternatively you can do elite 4 runs for money and is less tedious, although a little slower. Then get 50 wins using a competitive team in the battle tree, and use the gold bottle cap you receive the next day to max the shinies IV’s. This is what I do if I find a shiny. Make sure the nature is correct though, as this can never be changed.

Also if you keep a Pokémon that has the “flame body” ability in your party eggs will hatch faster. I use talonflame. Don’t forget about poke pelago’s hot tub feature also it actually works pretty well for hatching eggs.

The grand majority of the time a Shiny will happen(only if you're using a farming technique. Relying on Random Encounters, not so much. It HAS happened to me before. Yes! After 612 eggs I hatched a shiny Magikarp - it was the 12th egg of that save. So I soft reset and swapped in my female Mimikyu in place of the Magikarp and the 12th Mimikyu was shiny! Now I finally have my shiny Mimikyu, after a grand total of 1463 eggs (851 Mimikyuu eggs + 612 Magikarp). And that was with Masuda method and the shiny charm. I'm looking forward to using my lovely new Mimikyu on my shiny team I'd been gathering to use in my playthrough of Pokemon Sun that I got for christmas today. Well, it's time to wonder trade away the rest of my non-shiny Mimikyu hatchlings. They're all Jolly natured and most of them have 5 31's (I even got a couple with 6 31's somehow), so hopefully the people who recieve them will get some use out of them. ^^

They technically cannot patch this. Outside of the mon you breed, everything about an egg is guaranteed. If you breed a 5iv shiny magikarp on the third egg, you will successfully breed a 5iv shiny anything on the third egg if you reset without saving using the magikarp method. It sacrifices some extra time for consistency.

I don't get it at all... I mean, what exactly are you achieving here? As I see it, these are the two possible ways to do it: Without method: Spend a lot of time hatching Littens, get a shiny one, done. Say it took you 50 eggs. With method: Spend less time hatching Magikarps, get a shiny one after 50 eggs, reset. Then, hatch 50 Littens and get the shiny one. You took the same time for the Littens plus the time for the Magikarps and you have the same as without the method. How is this remotely useful? I know you do it in increments of 30 but still.

Because hatching shinies is so dependent on luck, there will indeed be times where it would have been faster to just hatch the shiny of the one you want right away. However, for the times where you'd hatch hundreds of eggs before getting the shiny, this method allows you to essentially "scout ahead" so you know what to expect. If you're hatching a Pokemon that takes longer to hatch than Karp (which is everything else) this could potentially save you a lot of time. It's still a lot of work but it can still be beneficial in its own way.

try the s.o.s method (works will all wild pokemon that can call an ally), i did it today and got a shiny after i think 45 or so successful ally calls for shinies you just need some patience

To talk about shinies makes me want to share a story, no means if bragging intended. Rockruff has been my favorite pokemon for as long as i have known about it. So of course as soon as I could get it I got it. I left two at the daycare and continued my journey. I came back some time later and retrieved the first egg. As I was walking down the route towards the lush jungle, the egg hatched and it was shiny! Sadly my game got deleted somehow when I logged on my DS after awhile apart from it. R.I.P. Shiny Lycanroc 😭

I actually recommend chaining for them in the wild (the adrenaline orb + false swipe strat) :3 I got one yesterday after a couple of hours, I was debating on using this strategy to get ahold of a shiny one at first but I found out it takes SO many steps to hatch eevees! Good luck though! ♥

If I get a shiny with this method, will it always have the same ivs and ability even if I soft reset? *Update: I tried it and got a shiny with the same Ivs and ability. So dont try this. However, you could swap to a pokemon that benefits from it the most based on the ivs the magikarp got, since the Ivs for the swapped pokemon will be the same as the magikarp's ivs. Also to note, I've only tested the ivs where both parents have 6 perfect ivs. If the ivs vary then idk what happens.

Wouldn't it be universally quicker to just forego the Magikarp portion, and just hatch eggs of the Pokemon you want shiny, not knowing when it will be shiny? Or does the Magikarp portion affect this equation somehow?

They're quicker to hatch so it just gives you a time frame basically. There's nothing wrong with just hatching multiple eggs of the pokemon you want, but this just tells you how many eggs you'll need to hatch before it'll finally be a shiny. And yes it can add into the equation, say you know it takes 22 eggs for the magikarp to be shiny. You take 21, then swap out the magikarp for the pokemon you want to be shiny, then you collect it's egg. Then you know you only have to hatch that one egg and it's guaranteed to be shiny as opposed to walking around for hours and hours hatching egg after egg never getting a shiny. This method is faster, and isn't very tedious at all, it just has a lot of steps (pardon the pun).

Danny Dan breed 30, remove parent, hatch 30. if theres a shiny, restart, put the pokemon you want shiny in nursery, hatch eggs until you get the shiny. if in the 30 eggs there wasnt a shiny, save the game, keep the 30 magikarp and breed 30 new ones so you got 60 and hatch those 30 again. then proceed the same way until you get 90,120, etc magikarps undtil you find a shiny, just save after hatching 30

Anthony Williams || That's correct. If the 60th magikarp was shiny, just replace the parent magikarp with the Pokemon you want a shiny for. Then, you would only need to hatch the 60th egg. That's what is nice about this method. Magikarp eggs hatch the fastest, and once you get a shiny magikarp, you'll know exactly how many eggs it will take to get the one egg that must be hatched for the shiny you actually want.

It's worth noting that if you don't have a foreign ditto and the pokemon your using to implement the masuda method is the magikarp parent, the new parent(the one you want a shiny of) has to be foreign. You have to keep the masuda method going or else it won't work. But this won't be an issue if you have a foreign ditto.

The odds are 1/512 bud. Even then it might not shine until long, LONG after your 500th egg. I'm working on my tenth Masuda/Shiny Charm shiny and it's my longest hunt so far; already 2500 eggs in. I've gotten them in under 30 eggs just IV breeding, most around the 300 mark, my longest before this hunt took just over 2000 eggs. My point is it varies greatly and takes a hell of a lot of patience, but it WILL shine if you just don't give up.
